Certification

Definition - What does Certification mean?

A certification is a document attesting to the truth of some statement or an event which grants a person or a group of people, special rights, privileges, or standing in a community or organization. Certifications often follow some assessment, education or review.

Software testing certifications can be either exam or education based, but both require the prospective student to pass an exam to become certified.

Techopedia explains Certification

Today, the most common certifications are professional. Some of these are certifications lasting for a lifetime while others expire after a certain period and have to be renewed later on. Professional certifications do not grant a person the legal right to practice a given profession or line of work - this is accomplished through a license granted by a government agency.

Examples of organizations that grant software certifications include the American Society for Quality and the International Institute for Software Testing (ISST).
