Windows To Go

Definition - What does Windows To Go mean?

Windows To Go is a Microsoft Windows 8 tool that is under development, as of late 2011. It allows users to securely boot compatible computers with a Universal Serial Bus (USB) thumb drive of 16 MB or more and provides a cloud alternative to small businesses unable to support costly Virtual Desktop Infrastructures (VDI).

According to Microsoft, Windows To Go will be included with all versions of Windows 8.

Techopedia explains Windows To Go

Windows To Go's primary advantage is file and setting access from the cloud - eliminating new backup or setting requirements.

Safety is another key feature. For example, if a USB drive is accidentally removed, Windows freezes the entire system to prevent data corruption or loss. If the USB drive is reinserted within one minute, system operations are restored. However, if the USB drive is not reinserted, the computer shuts down to prevent unauthorized access to sensitive data in random access memory (RAM) or via the display screen.

Tech gurus speculate that users will be able to select Windows To Go features during USB drive installation.
