In our Avira Antivirus review, we’ll cover all the key details about the antivirus product, including its features, plans, and how it compares to its rivals.

Avira is a popular antivirus solution designed to combat online threats and keep your system safe. In this review, we’ll look at what Avira has to offer, how effective it is, and if it’s good enough to sit alongside the best antivirus solutions.

What is Avira Antivirus?

Avira Antivirus was founded in 1986 in Germany. It’s built to protect users from various forms of malware, including viruses, trojans, worms, ransomware, and other kinds of malicious software.

Avira has a strong reputation in the cybersecurity field and is known for its free antivirus software, which is packed with features. The product is easy to use and gets excellent ratings under testing. It’s for reasons like these that we consider Avira to be one of the best antivirus solutions on the market.

Is Avira Antivirus Safe?

Avira Antivirus has a reputation as a top-tier security solution that’s been at the cutting edge of cybersecurity for decades. Packed with features to combat malware, Avira is an excellent choice for safeguarding your digital devices.

Independent testing has consistently shown Avira to be among the best in the business, and it’s won numerous security awards over the years. It’s received near-perfect scores from AV-Test and was also granted an Advanced+ rating from AV-Comparatives, underscoring its ability to protect against threats.

Avira Antivirus Plans & Pricing

Avira has a range of products to choose from, including a generous free-forever plan, which has a few basic features to keep your computer secure. The only gripe we had was the range of devices the antivirus covers, which could be improved.

The three plans allow you to subscribe for the first year at a reduced rate, which goes to a standard charge on renewal. You can also pay monthly, for a slight premium compared to the standard charge over the course of a year, and for two years, which gives you a discount on the respective standard rate.

All plans feature free trials and a generous 60-day money-back guarantee.

Avira Antivirus ProAvira Internet SecurityAvira Prime

Avira Antivirus Pro – $26.99/yr (renews at $44.99)

This is the most basic paid plan Avira has to offer. It comes with anti-ransomware features, removable device scanning, malicious site blocking, and data and identity protection.

It also features real-time protection powered by cloud-based AI to combat emerging threats. It’s worth noting that Antivirus Pro only supports Windows and Mac.

Avira Internet Security – $34.99/yr (renews at $57.99)

This package adds to Antivirus Pro’s offering with a software updater that patches vulnerabilities and automatically updates programs, drivers, and your operating system.

It’s also got a powerful password manager that stands up with some of the best password managers. As with Antivirus Pro, it’s only compatible with Windows and Mac.

You can also upgrade to cover three devices for $70.99/yr and five devices for $83.99/yr, with no increases on renewal.

Avira Prime – $59.99/yr (renews at $104.99)

This plan is the best Avira has to offer. It adds an unlimited VPN and device optimization tools to speed up your system and free up wasted space. It also supports mobile devices and can be used on Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS.

You can also upgrade to extend coverage to 25 devices for $129.99/yr, with no increase on renewal.

Can I Get Avira Antivirus for Free?

You can get Avira Antivirus for free for both Windows and Mac. Avira has a free, all-in-one solution equipped with all the essential tools you need to ensure your internet security, and it even comes with a VPN (limited to 500MB per month), a password manager, and some device optimization tools.

Avira Antivirus Security Features

Avira has an extensive list of features. We’ll explore each feature and the value that it delivers.

Virus Scans

There are several scan options on offer. A full scan will look at your entire device and can take some time to complete. This scan is the most thorough option for catching malware, and it’s the most resource-intensive.

If time is limited, you can opt for a quick scan, which will check the most vulnerable areas of your device. However, it’s not the most efficient scan around as malware can duplicate itself and find places to remain hidden.

Next, you can run a smart scan. As well as checking for malware, it will search for outdated apps, network threats, and performance and privacy issues. We liked how easy this is to use, as it allows you to rectify issues with a single click.

You can also schedule scans to run when required, so you scan when you aren’t using the device, meaning you won’t be affected by any performance issues.

Real-Time Antivirus Protection

Real-time protection from Avira
Real-time protection from Avira

Avira offers real-time protection with all of its plans, including the free plan. This feature monitors your system and every file you access, notifying you of any suspicious behavior.

The system is augmented by AI and tracks app behavior rather than just virus signatures. If it detects a problem, the antivirus will then prevent any changes to your system.

Firewall

Avira’s firewall uses a unique algorithm to prevent network intrusions, and it will notify you via a popup if it detects an attempt to break through. It’s simple to use and set up, with a clean interface that displays a list of all your apps and their respective trust levels.

Avira Firewall
Avira’s Firewall app rules

We found the firewall to be effective, even blocking threats missed by the Windows firewall. We would like to see more customization options, though, like the ability to toggle SSL protection. Another important note is that the firewall isn’t available with the free package, which instead relies on the Windows firewall.

Safe Shopping

Avira Safe Shopping is a free browser extension. This browser extension blocks malicious websites, which may be used for phishing or other scams, to keep you safe online. It also warns you if any unwanted applications are trying to find their way onto your system.

The extension can also compare prices, ensuring you get the best deals available. That said, while the add-on is available for Chrome, Opera, Edge, and Firefox, the Chrome version only includes the price comparison and not the online protection features.

Ransomware Protection

Avira's Ransomware Protection
Avira Antivirus Pro Ransomware Protection

Ransomware encrypts your files, disables your devices, and hijacks your data until you pay off the hackers. Naturally, it’s particularly dangerous for businesses and can be very hard to recover from.

Avira offers ransomware protection, which can detect these threats before they cause any harm. In fact, Avira blocks around 1.4 million ransomware attacks every month.

Data Breach Monitor

This feature alerts you if your personal details, such as your email address, have appeared in a data breach and have been published online or on the dark web.

Knowing this allows you to take action, such as using the password manager to change passwords on sites that have been implicated in data breaches. It’s a powerful security measure that ensures your sensitive data isn’t floating out there on the internet.

VPN

Avira's VPN
Avira’s VPN feature

Avira includes a virtual private network (VPN), and it even comes with the free Avira antivirus package, which isn’t something you see with every provider. You can use it to secure your online presence and browse anonymously, but it’s not necessarily the best VPN service compared to dedicated solutions.

The free version has a 500MB monthly bandwidth cap, which isn’t much for browsing, let alone streaming or torrenting. For unlimited data, you’ll need to upgrade to the Avira Prime package.

It has a kill switch, DNS leak protection, and a no-logs policy, but it doesn’t have an ad blocker. It also has 1,400 servers in 37 countries, which is far more than some add-on VPNs and even some standalone products.

Password Management

Avira Password Manager
Avira’s Password Manager

Avira has a decent password manager for generating and saving strong, unique passwords for all your accounts. All you need to remember is a single master password to gain access to your password vault.

It syncs your credentials across all your devices and gives you the option to set up two-factor authentication (2FA). It works with all major browsers, including Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Opera, and like the best password managers, it can auto-fill forms for you.

File Shredder

Avira File Shredder
Avira’s File Shredder

Avira has integrated a file shredder into all versions of their antivirus, including the free plan, so you can permanently remove files from your system.

All you need to do is drag and drop a file you want to get rid of into the file shredder, and Avira will permanently erase it. Of course, it’s important to be extra careful when using this feature, given that files cannot be recovered after using it.

Optimization Tools

Avira Optimization Tools

These tools can be used to declutter your system and remove junk files. You can also remove data, such as clearing your cache and deleting temporary files to free up disk space, which will improve the overall performance of your system.

Windows users also have access to tools to clean up the registry and clear browser history to enhance performance and reduce computer start-up time.

Software Updater

Avira Driver Updater
Avira’s Driver Updater

Avira includes a software updater, even with its free package, and it makes the process extremely simple – so you can ensure that you’re up to date and vulnerabilities are addressed.

It can also detect outdated device drivers that may be slowing down your system and can automatically update them to ensure your device runs smoothly.

Avira Antivirus Performance

In our testing, we saw excellent performance from Avira Antivirus. To expand on the results of our Avira Antivirus review, we also looked into the testing data from AV-Test, covering Avira’s protection capabilities, usability, and overall performance. In its latest round of testing, Avira got a perfect score of 18/18.

When it comes to protection, Avira blocks everything that’s thrown at it. It blocked 100% of zero-day attacks, including email and web threats, and 100% of prevalent malware programs, giving it 6 out of 6 points. When it came to usability, Avira didn’t issue any false warnings and was awarded full marks again.

In terms of performance, we saw a slight slow-down when running system scans – but this is expected to be resource-intensive. In AV-Test’s assessment, Avira matched or beat industry averages in four of five categories for both standard and high-end PCs and was awarded full marks for performance.

Avira Antivirus Compatibility and Ease of Use

Avira is known for its user-friendly interface, which is easy to use and simple to navigate. It’s accessible to a broad range of users of different experience levels, and it’s rated as one of the best free antivirus solutions out there.

Moreover, installation is straightforward, and updates are automatic, making maintenance simple. That said, let’s take a deeper look into how Avira works on different devices.

WindowsmacOSAndroidiOS

Avira Antivirus for Windows

Windows users can enjoy real-time protection against malware and other online threats. Avira is compatible with Windows 7 and later versions, and the setup process is easy.

Once installed, you’ll be prompted to run your first smart scan, which will unintrusively run in the background. Avira’s malware detection is among the best there, and it’s one of the best antivirus solutions for Windows.

Avira Antivirus for macOS

Avira for Mac is just as easy to use as it is for Windows. The apps are very similar, and Avira is compatible with macOS 10.15 and higher. It has a few Mac-only features, though.

For example, Mac users get access to an uninstaller, giving you an overview of all your apps so you can uninstall any app you don’t want. All of this puts Avira up there with the best antiviruses for Mac.

Avira Antivirus for Android

Avira for Android devices is available from the Google Play store and is compatible with Android 6 and later versions. It’s easy to use, with an intuitive interface, and there’s a free option available.

Avira is one of the best antivirus solutions for Android. It comes with a performance booster and storage optimization and can detect all the smart devices in your home network and scan them for vulnerabilities to ensure you don’t connect to a compromised device.

Avira Antivirus for iOS

Avira is compatible with iOS 11 and later and can be downloaded for free from the App Store. Interestingly, you can use it to stop Siri recording your conversations, and, just like all the free versions, it comes with a VPN.

There are also features to help you recover your lost or stolen phone, and it can help you remove duplicate photos and files to improve the performance of your device.

How Does Avira Antivirus Compare Against Other Antiviruses?

We know that Avira is excellent at detecting malware and keeping your system virus-free, but how does it compare to the competition? Let’s take a look.

Antivirus Starting Pricing Max Devices Real-time Protection Firewall Scans Top Features
Avira $26.99/yr 25 Quick, Full, Smart, Custom VPN, Password Manager, Safe Shopping
Avast $49.99/yr 30  Smart, Full, Targeted, Custom, Boot-Time, Explorer VPN, Webcam Protection, System Optimization
Bitdefender $29.99/yr 25 Quick, Full, Custom, Vulnerability Parental Controls, Anti-Theft, VPN
Norton $29.99/yr 10/Unlimited Smart, Quick, Full, Custom Password Manager, Dark web Monitoring, Parental Controls

Avira vs Avast

Avira and Avast are both popular antivirus solutions, though Avira is somewhat cheaper. A key difference between them lies in their malware detection methods and overall performance impact.

Avira is known for being lightweight with robust malware detection, while Avast is more resource-intensive but has a more extensive range of features with a visually engaging design.

Another noticeable difference is Avira’s Safe Shopping extension. Avast doesn’t offer this, but it does offer real-time protection and can block malicious sites, adding additional layers of protection for users.

Avira vs Bitdefender

These are two of the best, most affordable antivirus solutions available, and they both have 100% malware detection rates and a wide range of features on offer. They’re both easy to use, with user-friendly interfaces and straightforward installation.

It’s hard to compete with Avira’s free plan, though, so if you’re looking for an effective free antivirus solution, Avira may well be for you. On the other hand, if you’re looking for an antivirus with excellent parental control features, then Bitdefender comes out on top.

Avira vs Norton

Norton is another excellent antivirus solution, and choosing between the two is tough. Norton offers better web protection, however.

While both can block access to dangerous websites, Norton allows you to see community reviews of suspicious web pages, giving you clearer information on whether a website is dangerous. That said, both have excellent ad blockers and can offer real-time protection and in-depth scans.

Avira Antivirus reviews on Trustpilot

However, reviews from Trustpilot are mixed. Avira has a score of 3.5 out of 5, with over 26,500 reviews. Many users praise its malware detection rates, but others complain that customer service could be improved.

That said, 86% of reviews give the platform four or five stars, and it has more of these and fewer one-star ratings than a competitor like Avast, which has a 3.9/5 overall score.
