Does Apple Mac Need Virus Protection? Can Macs Get Viruses?

There has long been a myth that Mac devices don’t get viruses. While there might once have been fewer viruses targeting Macs, there are now thousands of malware tools developed exclusively for Apple devices. So, does a Mac need antivirus? Yes, it does.

The increasing number of domestic users switching to MacBooks and the growing popularity of Macs in business and enterprise settings has incentivized hackers to build ransomware and spy programs for the Apple ecosystem. So, there’s little doubt that Macs can get viruses today, and there are widespread spyware attacks targeting Apple products.

Although macOS includes some security features, one click on a malicious website or an unwise download can wreck your device and expose you to fraud and identity theft. Fortunately, you can implement real-time protection, scan your Mac for viruses and malware, and implement multi-layered security using third-party Apple security tools.

What macOS Malware Threats are Prevalent Today?

No matter what operating system you use, you’ll encounter online threats when using the internet, and there are now a wide range of malicious programs targeting Mac users.

In the past, Apple users believed they generally didn’t need to worry about viruses – but malware for Macs is widely prevalent today. Malware attacks have dramatically increased with rising Mac usage, with the number of new reported macOS viruses increasing by 100% between 2022 and 2023. Apple users face a wide range of threats today, including:

VirusesRansomware ProgramsMac AdwareKeyloggersSpywareFake Antivirus Software

Viruses

Viruses, such as worms and Trojans, are a type of malware that seeks to infect devices and spread using system flaws and camouflaged software. Once installed, Mac viruses will then attempt to corrupt your files, steal your data, or give hackers access to your accounts.

Ransomware Programs

Ransomware programs lock your Mac, so it’s unusable until you pay a ransom. Hackers will often demand untraceable cryptocurrency and will threaten to delete your data if you don’t pay up.

This can be particularly damaging for businesses and organizations like schools and hospitals, which have irreplaceable data – but it’s just as painful for private users. For commercial security solutions, see our guide to the best business antiviruses.

Mac Adware

Adware can hijack your browser, generate pop-up ads, and track your activity on your Mac. These programs may also download other malware and further infect your device.

Keyloggers

Keyloggers track your Mac data inputs and keystrokes and seek to steal your personal information, such as credit card details and passwords.

Once your details have been stolen, you’ll permanently be at risk of identity theft. In some cases, hackers have spent years using a single social security number to impersonate unwitting victims, for example.

Spyware

Spyware can include keyloggers, but other Mac hacking tools allow malicious individuals to access your camera and microphone, track your location, and take over your Mac apps. This type of Mac malware is among the most severe threats you can face.

For information on removing spyware from Apple devices, see our guide to how to remove spyware from iPhones.

Fake Mac Antivirus Software

Shady sites often feature ads warning you that your device is infected with a virus. However, clicking on these ads will actually expose you to malware. Mac Auto Fixer and MacDefender are two fake antiviruses for Mac that are often seen online but have been identified as being malicious.

When looking for Mac security solutions, you should only consider reputable providers, and you should only download software from trustworthy vendors and official app stores. For more information, see our guide to how to spot and remove fake antivirus software.

All of this means that it’s critical to get internet security software in place and scan for viruses on Mac.

Best Antivirus for Mac Options Reviewed

I’ve thoroughly tested each of the best Mac antiviruses on my shortlist based on our comprehensive assessment methodology. They’ve been selected from a longer list of 15 providers to help you find the one best suited to your needs and budget.

1. TotalAV – Best Antivirus for Macs With Real-Time Protection

TotalAV antivirus VPN logo

Starting Price $19/year
Free Version/Trial Free scanning
Key Features 100% Malware Detection, WebShield, Smart Scan Functionality
Max Devices 8
Antivirus Lab Testing Results 17.5/18 (Protection: 6/6, Performance: 6/6, Usability: 5.5/6)

Why We Picked It

TotalAV is the best Mac antivirus software for real-time protection thanks to its exceptional performance in detecting and neutralizing threats before they can compromise your system. I rate it as the overall best antivirus for Macs available today.

Features

  • Real-Time Protection – TotalAV’s Smart Scan feature thoroughly probes your Mac, detecting and eliminating malware, viruses, and other threats. At the same time, its advanced Real-Time Protection feature continuously monitors your system, proactively identifying and neutralizing potential threats.
  • Web Protection – TotalAV’s WebShield constantly monitors your online activity while you browse the internet. Its Safari browser extension intelligently blocks access to known phishing sites and malicious URLs and worked efficiently and effectively in my testing. This makes a big difference, given that a staggering 3.4 billion phishing emails are sent every single day.
  • VPN – I appreciated the fact that TotalAV includes a VPN, enabling you to encrypt your internet connection. This is great for those concerned about privacy and security and is particularly useful when using public Wi-Fi networks. There’s also data breach monitoring to alert you if your logins have been compromised and leaked on the web so you can update your security settings.
  • Compatibility – Impressively, the antivirus protects five devices with its starter plan, costing just $19/year, and covers all major platforms. TotalAV has iPhone compatibility and is known for being among the best Android antiviruses. It also regularly tops the charts for catching Windows malware. If there’s one shortcoming, it’s TotalAV’s lack of a firewall – though you can, of course, use the built-in macOS firewall.

Antivirus Testing Results

TotalAV excelled in AV-Test’s assessment, earning perfect scores for Protection and Performance and 5.5/6 for Usability, with 100% malware detection rates and just one false positive.

Although TotalAV slightly impacted the speed of some tasks, it was still on par with or better than most competitors, and I found the apps very easy to use in testing.

Pricing

TotalAV’s basic plan starts at $19/year and protects five devices. I also recommend the top-tier TotalAV Total Security plan, which supports eight devices and includes features like a VPN and password manager for $49/year, providing excellent multi-layered security at a reasonable price.

All plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee, and you can use free scans to test out the platform. Given its affordability, I consider TotalAV to be the best antivirus for Mac and Windows.

Who It’s Best For

TotalAV is a great pick for Mac users looking for comprehensive security and is ideal for anyone using online banking, shopping online, or handling sensitive data. I rate it as the best antivirus for macOS real-time protection and it can also ensure you’re safe from web and email threats such as ransomware and phishing attacks.

With its affordable introductory offer, it’s also the best value Mac antivirus you can find.

For more information, read our full TotalAV review.

Pros

  • Very affordable
  • Robust real-time protection
  • Minimal impact on performance
  • Perfect malware detection rate
  • Beginner-friendly Mac app

2. Norton Antivirus – Best Antivirus for Mac for Families

Norton Antivirus logo

Starting Price $29.99/year
Free Version/Trial 30-day trial
Key Features Advanced Parental Control Tools, Smart Firewall, Cloud Backups
Max Devices Unlimited
Antivirus Lab Testing Results 18/18 (Protection: 6/6, Performance: 6/6, Usability: 6/6)

Why We Picked It

Norton provides strong, user-friendly protection for Mac users, with a range of features, like parental controls and multi-device support – making it an excellent choice for families.

Features

  • Real-Time Protection – Norton offers real-time threat detection to stop malware before it can infect your Mac. Its behavioral analysis systems can detect novel Mac viruses and emerging malware, while the smart firewall monitors network traffic to block attacks and intrusions. These systems performed well in my assessments, and the provider gets great scores in independent testing.
  • Virus Protection Promise – The Norton Virus Protection Promise is a standout feature, in my opinion. If Norton can’t remove a virus from your system, even with expert assistance, then the company commits to providing a full refund.
  • Parental Controls – Norton’s parental control features are a major plus for families, and it qualifies the antivirus as one of the best parental control apps for Mac. You can monitor and control your kids’ screen time, block inappropriate content, and even track their location via their devices for reassurance about their safety and security.
  • Additional Security Features – Higher-tier plans offer up to 500GB of cloud storage to provide personal backups and protect your family from ransomware. The package includes Norton Password Manager, and you can use Norton’s VPN to encrypt your internet connection for privacy. While it’s not as fully featured as standalone VPNs like Surfshark, it’s a nice bonus. There are also a range of excellent identity protection tools. With a new identity theft victim every 22 seconds, it’s a welcome addition.

Antivirus Testing Results

In AV-Test’s Mac testing, Norton achieved perfect scores of 6/6 for protection, performance, and usability, demonstrating excellent malware detection and generating no false positives.

Norton did have some limited impact on installation times, but this minor drawback didn’t significantly impact its results.

Pricing

Norton’s entry-level plan for Mac starts at $29.99/year and includes the Virus Protection Promise, a password manager, and 2GB of cloud backups.

The Norton 360 with LifeLock Select plan, at $189.99/year, is ideal for families. The impressive plan covers ten devices and offers parental controls, 250GB of cloud backups, identity theft protection, and a VPN. All annual plans come with a 60-day money-back guarantee and a free trial.

Who It’s Best For

Norton is ideal for families with multiple Apple devices who are looking for a user-friendly security solution, and it’s certainly a match for its Windows version.

In addition, its protection guarantee, support for multiple devices, and parental controls make it stand out from the crowd as a strong option.

For more information, read our Norton Antivirus review.

Pros

  • Minimal impact on system performance
  • User-friendly apps
  • Comprehensive parental control features
  • 100% Protection Guarantee
  • Cloud backups for safeguarding important data

Cons

  • Full scans can take time

3. NordVPN Threat Protection – Best Mac Antivirus for Secure, Private Browsing

NordVPN logo

Starting Price $52.52/year
Free Version/Trial 7-day Android trial
Key Features Fast, Secure VPN, Data Breach Scanner, Secure Storage
Max Devices 10
Antivirus Lab Testing Results Strong in-house testing results

Why We Picked It

NordVPN Threat Protection offers simple but effective antivirus software for Mac. The security product seamlessly integrates with Nord’s highly secure VPN to protect against malware, infected download files, personal data leaks, and tracking and ensures you have a secure and private internet connection.

Features

  • Web Protection – NordVPN Threat Protection safeguards your Mac by scanning downloads for malware and blocking ads, trackers, and malicious websites, offering thorough defenses against online threats. In my testing, it was able to consistently block dangerous files and sites on Safari.
  • VPN – The integrated VPN is a standout feature. It uses military-grade AES-256 encryption to secure your internet connection and protect your privacy. With over 6,700+ servers in 111 countries and the high-speed, proprietary NordLynx protocol, you can enjoy fast, secure access to global content on your Mac.
  • Data Breach Scanner – NordVPN Threat Protection also includes a data breach scanner that monitors the dark web for leaked personal details associated with your email, passwords, and credit card details. If a breach is detected, you’ll receive alerts to take action and secure your accounts.
  • Additional Security Features – The Plus plan gives you access to NordPass, a secure cross-platform password manager, and upgrading your plan will get you 1TB of encrypted cloud storage with NordLocker. However, it’s worth mentioning that NordVPN Threat Protection is geared toward web protection, so it doesn’t have a firewall and doesn’t scan device drives.

Antivirus Testing Results

NordVPN Threat Protection performed extremely well in my tests. I found it consistently blocked risky sites, flagged 100% of the 2,000+ malware samples I tested it against, and was able to identify vulnerabilities in my system.

At the same time, it had minimal impact on my Mac’s performance, and I found the apps intuitive and easy to use. At present, there aren’t independent tests of NordVPN’s security tools, however.

Pricing

NordVPN includes Nord Threat Protection for Mac and Windows with its Plus and Ultimate plans. Plus costs $3.89/month with a two-year subscription and covers ten devices, including a data breach scanner and one of the best password managers around, while Ultimate is $5.89/month and adds identity theft protection and encrypted storage.

You can also subscribe to Plus for one year for $5.49/month or for one month for $13.99/month. All plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee, but the only free trial is for Android and lasts seven days.

Who It’s Best For

Given that it includes one of the best VPN services available, NordVPN Threat Protection is a strong pick for Mac users seeking robust web security and privacy. Getting a password manager and a data breach scanner is an added bonus for protecting your identity, of course.

For more information, read our NordVPN Threat Protection review.

Pros

  • Top VPN service included, with a global network
  • Protection from online trackers and intrusive ads
  • Lightweight security features
  • User-friendly interface

Cons

  • Relatively expensive
  • More security features on Windows and Mac

4. Surfshark Antivirus – Best High-Speed VPN With an Antivirus for Mac

Surfshark VPN logo

Starting Price $34.86/year
Free Version/Trial 7-day VPN trial
Key Features Real-Time Protection, First-Class VPN, Webcam Protection
Max Devices 5
Antivirus Lab Testing Results 17.5/18 for Windows

Why We Picked It

Surfshark is the best Mac VPN with antivirus for users prioritizing performance and privacy. It provides online security, while the Surfshark VPN service offers great internet connection speeds, plus a strict no-logs policy audited by Deloitte to ensure your online activity remains private.

Features

  • Real-Time Protection – Surfshark offers real-time defenses and antivirus protection against threats like malware, viruses, and ransomware, while the CleanWeb feature acts as a powerful web shield, blocking ads and trackers and offering phishing protection. Privacy-conscious users will also appreciate the webcam protection feature, which prevents unauthorized access to Mac cameras. Given the lightweight software, I rate it as the best antivirus for MacBook.
  • VPN – Surfshark’s VPN has a network of over 3,200 servers in 100+ countries, ensuring you can encrypt your internet traffic and mask your IP address. Surfshark’s cutting-edge WireGuard protocol guarantees fast and secure connections, while a strict no-logs policy ensures your privacy and anonymity.
  • VPN vs Antivirus Features – While the VPN has fewer servers than NordVPN, it’s a more comprehensive antivirus package and includes real-time protection and the ability to run a full scan on your device, which is a definite positive. Based on my testing, it’s a great combination of first-class VPN features and in-depth antivirus tools.
  • Additional Security Features – On top of the antivirus, you get Surfshark Alert, which monitors for data breaches, and the private Surfshark Search engine, which allows users to make anonymous web searches. If there are drawbacks, they’re that Surfshark Antivirus doesn’t support iPhones, and it doesn’t offer a Mac firewall, which may disappoint some Apple users.

Antivirus Testing Results

Surfshark doesn’t have independent lab testing results for its Mac offering, but it has demonstrated strong performance on Windows.

In AV-Test’s latest assessments, Surfshark detected 100% of malware, including both widespread and novel samples, and generated zero false warnings with close to 1 million file scans. It fared slightly worse for performance but still earned a 5.5/6 score, and I’ve found it a consistently effective and easy-to-use solution in my testing.

Pricing

Surfshark Antivirus is available as part of the excellent Surfshark One bundle, starting at just $2.49/month with a two-year plan, which also includes three extra months. This plan includes antivirus protection, the VPN, and privacy tools. You can also subscribe to Surfshark One at a higher rate for one year for $3.19/month or for one month for $17.95/month.

The premium Surfshark One+ plan, at $3.99/month, adds identity protection and data removal features. Both plans provide the antivirus app for five devices and the VPN for unlimited devices, along with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Who It’s Best For

Surfshark Antivirus is ideal for Mac users who want a balance of security, privacy, and speed. If you use public Wi-Fi or need to protect sensitive online activity, then it’s a great pick – and it’s considered one of the fastest VPNs around.

For more information, read our Surfshark Antivirus review.

Pros

  • Strong VPN for privacy protection
  • User-friendly interface for Mac
  • Real-time protection and webcam security
  • Affordable pricing

Cons

  • No firewall
  • Doesn’t support iPhone

Intego has over 25 years of experience creating security software for Apple devices. It’s one of the best Mac virus protection and malware removal tools around and offers intuitive and powerful security applications built specifically for macOS.

Features

  • Malware Scanning and Real-Time Protection – Intego’s VirusBarrier tool provides malware scanning and real-time protection optimized for macOS, which was fast and easy to use in my assessments. The advanced two-way NetBarrier firewall, meanwhile, monitors incoming and outgoing network traffic and automatically adjusts settings to prevent data breaches.
  • System Optimization – Mac users also benefit from the Intego Mac Washing Machine system optimizer, which intelligently removes junk files and duplicates to free up storage.
  • Parental Controls and VPN – I liked the range of extra security features that Intego includes. Families will appreciate the ContentBarrier parental control feature, which offers in-depth tools for setting usage limits and content filtering. In addition, you get bootable Mac backups to protect your files, and there’s Intego’s Privacy Protection VPN add-on, which enables anonymous browsing with thousands of servers that are spread over 83 countries.
  • iPhone Scans – While the Mac antivirus doesn’t have full support for iOS, you can scan an attached iPhone as an external drive. There’s also a more limited Windows edition of the software available.

Antivirus Testing Results

In independent assessments conducted by AV-Test, Intego’s VirusBarrier demonstrated strong performance, achieving a protection score of 5.5/6 and a perfect usability score of 6.0, indicating minimal false positives. It had a slightly lower score for performance, with a slight impact on system speeds.

In AV-Comparatives’ Mac malware protection review, Intego detected 99.1% of malware and over 9/10 Potentially Unwanted Applications (PUAs).

Pricing

The entry-level Intego Mac Internet Security X9 plan starts at $39.99/year for a single device, but you can save money by opting for a three-device plan at $54.99/year ($18.33/device) or getting a two-year subscription for $37.50/year.

For comprehensive protection, I recommend the Mac Premium Bundle + VPN plan, which includes the Privacy Protection VPN. It costs $89.99/year or $75/year with a two-year subscription and will ensure your internet connection is private and secure.

Who It’s Best For

Intego is an excellent choice for macOS users looking for a purpose-built security solution that seamlessly integrates with Apple devices. With system optimization tools, parental controls, and a VPN, it can also do plenty more for your Mac.

Pros

  • Fully optimized for macOS devices

6. Avast – Best Free Antivirus for Mac

Avast antivirus logo

Starting Price $35.88/year
Free Version/Trial Free plan, 30-day trial
Key Features Robust Real-Time Protection, Web and Email Shields, Wi-Fi Inspector
Max Devices 30
Antivirus Lab Testing Results 18/18 (Protection: 6/6, Performance: 6/6, Usability: 6/6)

Why We Picked It

Avast is the best free antivirus for Mac. It offers strong malware detection and removal capabilities, a user-friendly interface, and a range of security features to protect your Apple devices.

Features

  • Free Plan – Avast Free Antivirus for Mac has the key tools needed to keep your Apple device secure. Its real-time protection feature monitors your device continuously, blocking malware and detecting abnormal behavior on your system. That said, I found you’ll get persistent notifications to upgrade, and the free plan doesn’t offer the level of security provided by the full product, let alone a provider like TotalAV.
  • Smart Scans – Avast’s smart scan technology can perform in-depth system scans and is particularly useful. It identifies viruses, outdated software, and performance issues in a single scan, helping you keep your Mac working efficiently – and it worked very effectively in my testing.
  • Wi-Fi Inspector – Avast’s Wi-Fi Inspector – which requires a paid plan – automatically checks for network vulnerabilities when you use your Mac at home or on public networks. This provides an additional layer of protection, and I rate it as a very useful extra.
  • Web and Mail Shields – The web and mail shields provide additional defenses by blocking malicious links and attachments, safeguarding your Mac from phishing and online threats. Online shopping and banking protection is also on offer to round out the package.

Antivirus Testing Results

In the latest AV-Test Mac testing, Avast demonstrated excellent performance. It achieved perfect scores for protection, performance, and usability, detecting 100% of threats with minimal system impact during everyday use and while running scans.

In AV-Comparatives’ testing, meanwhile, the Avast security tools detected 100% of Mac malware and 98% of PUAs, earning it approved certification.

Pricing

Avast has a great free plan, but while it offers a more comprehensive set of tools than other free antivirus software for Mac, you can get plenty of benefits by upgrading.

Avast Ultimate Security for $49.99/year for one device or $69.99/year for ten is an excellent package. It also offers significantly better value for money than the Avast One Silver plan, which has a relatively limited offering given that its security, privacy, and system optimization tools are broken into separate modules, each costing $35.88/year.

If you need to protect a lot of devices, the Avast One Gold Family package is a great deal, covering 30 devices for $131.88/year.

Who It’s Best For

Avast’s free Mac antivirus is a great choice for budget-conscious users looking for reliable online protection. For comparison with other free plans, check out our guide to the best free antivirus software.

For more information, read our Avast antivirus review.

Pros

  • Free Mac malware protection
  • Minimal impact on system performance
  • Real-time monitoring
  • Network monitoring

Cons

  • Free plan includes upgrade notifications
  • Pricing can be confusing

7. McAfee – Best Mac Antivirus for Extra Security Features

McAfee antivirus logo

Starting Price $39.99/year
Free Version/Trial 30-day trial
Key Features Social Privacy Manager, Protection Score, Personal Data Cleanup, VPN, Password Manager
Max Devices Unlimited
Antivirus Lab Testing Results 18/18 for Windows

Why We Picked It

McAfee is the best Mac antivirus for its wide range of security features, offering a selection of tools to protect against cyber threats.

With McAfee, you get access to a powerful firewall, real-time antivirus protection, a VPN, identity monitoring, and a password manager with the most affordable plan.

Features

  • Malware Protection and the McAfee Protection Score – McAfee includes strong core antivirus scanning features and a customizable firewall that gives Mac users precise control over network traffic. The McAfee Protection Score, meanwhile, is a very useful indicator of the level of protection you have in place, with actionable recommendations for improving your security.
  • Social Privacy Manager – McAfee’s Social Privacy Manager stands out for providing personalized recommendations for social media users to enhance privacy settings on their accounts. It’s a very useful feature with a compelling use case, and it’s not something provided by many competitors.
  • VPN and Password Manager – McAfee also has a built-in VPN that enables secure and anonymous browsing, with a reported network of over 2,000 servers across 48 countries. It’s not as capable as the services delivered by NordVPN or Surfshark, but it’s a nice addition. The password manager further enhances your security by generating and storing strong, unique passwords for all your accounts, and it’s something I appreciate seeing included.
  • Online Privacy Tools – The Personal Data Cleanup and Online Account Cleanup features help you remove your data from unused online accounts and request that data brokers delete your details, helping you reduce your digital footprint and potential exposure to fraud in what I’d rate as being a great extension of your security. There’s also a data breach monitoring feature, which checks the dark web for traces of your personal information.

Antivirus Testing Results

Independent testing results aren’t available for McAfee on Mac, but it gets great results on Windows. In the latest AV-Test lab report, it identified 100% of malware files put to it and matched or beat industry performance averages in 11 of 12 categories.

This gave the provider the highest score possible for the test, with full marks for protection, performance, and usability. In addition, McAfee also earned a three-star testing score for real-world protection with AV-Comparatives.

Pricing

McAfee’s plans start at $39.99/year for five devices, including antivirus protection, a VPN, identity monitoring, and a password manager.

Upgrading provides coverage for multiple devices and features like social privacy management and $1m identity theft coverage. In my view, the McAfee Premium plan, for $49.99/year, is the best plan on offer as it allows you to protect an unlimited number of devices at a very affordable price. In comparison, Norton only offers unlimited device support with its top-tier $299.99/year plan.

Who It’s Best For

McAfee antivirus is ideal for Mac users looking for a broad range of features with its security suites. It’s also a good option for individuals and families with numerous devices, as higher-tier plans offer coverage for unlimited devices. In addition, it’s rated as one of the best Reddit antivirus recommendations for Mac.

For more information, read our McAfee review.

Pros

  • Wide-ranging security features
  • Affordable starter plan with essential protection tools
  • Coverage for unlimited devices with mid-tier plans
  • Diverse identity protection tools

Cons

  • Starter plan only supports one device
  • VPN could be more robust

How We Review And Test Antivirus Software

15 Antiviruses Tested

20 Datapoints Measured

300+ Hours Testing

500+ User Reviews Read

We base our recommendations on first-hand experience and in-depth testing. All the Antivirus products we suggest, have been tested based on the following criteria:

  • Core Security Features: We make sure that the antivirus software is fully equipped with features like real-time protection, scanning, a firewall, web protection, and more.
  • Malware Detection Rates: We test malware detection rates ourselves by running both in-depth and quick scans on our devices. Additionally, we check independent lab tests.
  • Compatibility: We check which devices and operating systems the antivirus software is compatible with. Often, different-looking dashboards and slightly different packages of features may be available.
  • Performance Impact: A reliable and functional antivirus should not slow down your device significantly. So, we examine our device performance with and without the antivirus running.
  • Customer Experience: Alongside our own experience, we are curious to know what real users have to say regarding the services. So, we’ve scoured the web for feedback on each of our tested antiviruses.
  • Value for Money: We always consider value for money and how much each product is offering for the set price point.

How to Choose the Best Mac Antivirus Software

Shopping for anti-virus software for Mac computers can be a confusing process, with the wide range of features and functionality on offer. Indeed, whether you’re looking at a virus scanner for Mac or identity protection tools, it can be tough to know what really matters.

Here’s my advice on the key features to consider:

SecurityAdditional featuresDevicesValue for money

Security

Naturally, you want the best malware protection for Mac. Make sure that the anti-virus for Macs you pick can detect and block malware and provide real-time protection. Ideally, it should have independent testing stats to prove its performance.

To note, we’ve cut Kaspersky Internet Security from our lists since the provider was banned in the U.S., due to allegations of connections to the Russian government and security services.

Additional Features

Additional security tools go beyond basic protection and are important differentiators when buying an antivirus program for a Mac. They can include everything from VPNs and password managers to ad blockers and data breach monitors.

If it’s a point of concern, you might also look for specific anti-phishing, anti-ransomware, and webcam protection tools.

Devices

Your digital ecosystem likely includes a range of devices and a good antivirus program for Mac will protect more than just one machine. Additionally, it’s worth checking how many devices you can add to your subscription and what hardware and operating systems it supports.

Value for Money

Many people will be tempted to buy the cheapest security tool possible or to opt for free solutions, like the Avira free antivirus. However, this may be poor value for money if the antivirus solution provides inadequate security.

The best macOS antivirus should be affordable while ensuring you’re protected at all times.

Will My Mac Antivirus Protect My iPhone?

The best Mac antivirus solutions usually offer iPhone applications to keep your mobile device malware-free and block malicious apps. However, you’ll need to ensure that your chosen provider supports iOS devices and that an iPhone license is included in your subscription.

Of the top iPhone antiviruses I’ve tested, TotalAV stands out as the best option to protect both your Mac and smartphone. Its entry-level plan includes licenses for four devices, and its iPhone app is lightweight and intuitive while offering industry-leading malware protection. How to Improve Mac Security and Performance

Getting the best virus protection for Mac is an important starting point for ensuring the security of your device, but there’s more that you can do. Here are my recommendations:

  • Keep Software Up to Date – Always keep your system and apps up to date. Also, make sure that you download the latest macOS updates so that you’re not exposed to vulnerabilities.
  • Protect Your Passwords – I recommend using a password manager, implementing multi-factor authentication, and periodically updating your most important passwords. If your iCloud account is breached, you could fall victim to spyware, so it’s worth making sure that it’s particularly secure.
  • Get a VPN – An antivirus won’t stop your ISP, the government, advertisers, or malicious third parties from tracking you online. By encrypting your connection, a VPN will keep you safe and allow you to log in from servers around the world. NordVPN is a top provider, and our best Mac VPN and best antivirus with VPN guides offer more information.
  • Enable the Built-In Firewall – It’s worth ensuring the macOS firewall is enabled and turning on the Gatekeeper functionality for app protection.
  • Protect Your Data – The Mac FireVault feature encrypts your data, protecting you if your device is stolen. It’s also worth using the Mac Time Machine to back up your files, giving you a lifeline in a worst-case scenario.
  • Optimize Performance – Many antiviruses include system tune-up tools. But you can also use the Mac storage management tools to remove unwanted files, reduce the number of apps opening on launch, and track resource-heavy apps with the Activity Monitor.
  • Turn Off Unused Sharing Services – If you’re not actively using them, disable features like File Sharing, Remote Login, and Printer Sharing, which otherwise leave your Mac accessible and vulnerable.

How Do I Scan My Mac for Viruses?

Installing and setting up an antivirus tool on a Mac is fairly straightforward. I’ll use TotalAV as an example for this Mac anti-virus how-to.

  1. Download and Install TotalAV

Head to TotalAV’s website, sign up for an account, and download the software. Once you’ve downloaded the TotalAV.pkg, it’s just a matter of double-clicking to install it.

    Download and Install TotalAV
  2. Click Continue to Install

Once you’ve opened the install wizard, it’s fairly straightforward to get through the installation process. You just need to select where you want to install TotalAV and which type of installation you’d prefer.

    Click Continue to Install
  3. Complete the Installation

TotalAV uses system-level tools, which require permission from the administrator to install. In most cases, you just need to enter the username and password to confirm this.

Now you’re up and running with TotalAV, and you can scan your Mac for viruses. There’s an automatic update service, so you’ll always be updated with the latest malware definitions to keep your iMac antivirus best-in-class.

Can I Use a Free Mac Antivirus?

While there are numerous free antivirus software in the market today, I recommend against opting for one. There are plenty of operators that will masquerade as legitimate antivirus providers but will actually sell your information or track your activity. So, it’s best to stick with reputable, recommended options.

Several of the providers on this list offer free trial versions and free plans alongside their main product. For example, TotalAV gives you access to free antivirus scans. Avast One, on the other hand, includes a free antivirus with ransomware protection and a limited VPN and I rate it as the best antivirus for Mac free plan.

However, Mac free antivirus options generally come with limited features and functionality, lacking significant features, like multi-layered protection, which lower the identity theft risk.

So – is it safe to use a free antivirus on Mac? Not really. A much better option than even the best Mac antivirus free to users is to opt for a free trial and money back guarantee from a reputable provider.

Conclusion – What is the Best Antivirus Mac Users Can Find?

Though macOS is one of the safer operating systems, it’s far from being untouchable. With increasing MacBook use at home and in workplaces, more and more cybercriminals are looking for ways to infiltrate and infect Apple systems.

Because of this, it’s very important to use a strong antivirus for Mac to add an extra layer of security to your system. After extensive testing and research – following our comprehensive assessment methodology – I’ve concluded that TotalAV provides the best antivirus macOS users can find.

The Mac antivirus’ plans include web protection, a password manager, and a VPN in addition to excellent Mac malware protection software. At the same time, it’s nevertheless one of the cheapest products on the market to get started with, with its excellent introductory offer.
