Antivirus vs VPN – What’s the Difference and Do You Need Both?
A Virtual Private Network (VPN) masks your online identity, obscures your IP address, and offers protection from third-party tracking when browsing online. An antivirus, on the other hand, stops viruses and other malicious software from infiltrating your device, protecting your hardware, data, and online accounts.
Both solutions offer protection when using the internet. A VPN routes your internet traffic through encrypted tunnels, while an antivirus will protect your computer from malware that might steal your files or cause damage to your device.
By using a VPN and antivirus in combination, users can secure their connection and block malicious activity, doubling up their defenses. Because of this, I recommend having both VPN and antivirus tools for comprehensive internet security.
Do I Need Antivirus Software If I Have a VPN?
A VPN will encrypt your internet traffic, but it won’t protect you from viruses. If you download an infected file from a malicious site or an email, then a VPN connection won’t do anything to help.
Antivirus software, on the other hand, typically includes tools to detect and block malware, spyware, and ransomware. Fortunately, antivirus software and VPNs work well together and can be combined to reinforce your online defenses.
In addition, many antiviruses – like TotalAV – include VPN functionality today, offering a combined package. Furthermore, leading VPN providers like NordVPN and Surfshark include antivirus and web protection features, meaning you get a top VPN as well as security tools to protect your device.
Best Antivirus Software with VPN Reviewed

1. TotalAV – Best Antivirus with VPN Overall

Free Version/Trial | Free Plan |
Key Features | Comprehensive Antivirus Scans and Real-Time Protection, Password Manager, Unlimited VPN |
Antivirus Testing Results | 17.5/18 (Protection: 6/6, Performance: 5.5/6, Usability: 6/6) |
VPN Server Network | 50+ servers in 35+ countries |
Why We Picked It
TotalAV is the best antivirus with VPN functionality that you can buy today and offers an excellent service, combining comprehensive malware protection and a reliable VPN.
It consistently scores high marks in independent antivirus tests for its antivirus capabilities while providing solid security and privacy features to secure your online activities. I rate it as the best overall provider today.
Antivirus Features
- Real-Time Protection – TotalAV’s antivirus offers real-time protection for PCs against a wide range of threats, including viruses, malware, ransomware, and phishing attacks. Its virus definitions are updated daily and ensure complete protection from the latest threats.
- Scans – The antivirus includes multiple scan options, including quick scans, full system scans, and custom scans, allowing users to customize their security checks and add performance testing to the process. All of this makes scanning fast, efficient, and effective.
- Security Tools – TotalAV also includes the WebShield extension, which blocks malicious websites and third-party trackers, and system optimization tools, including a disk cleaner and startup manager. I also appreciated the Silent Mode, which minimizes disruptions while gaming or streaming, and the password manager, which can help you secure your accounts.
VPN Features
- VPN Server Network – The integrated Safe Browsing VPN provides a solid foundation for online privacy. It doesn’t have the largest server network compared to competitors like NordVPN, but with 50+ server locations in more than 35 countries, it offers all the options that most users will need to bypass geo-restrictions while remaining anonymous online.
- VPN Usability – I found the VPN feature’s one-click connect feature especially useful. It makes it very easy for PC users who are new to VPN technology to get started.
Antivirus Testing Results
TotalAV showed solid performance in the latest AV-Test assessments and blocked 100% of zero-day and widespread malware, including web and email threats.
Performance, on the other hand, got a 5.5/6 score due to higher-than-average slowdowns during the installation of frequently used software on older machines, though it matched or beat industry averages in 8 of 10 categories. Nevertheless, web browsing and app downloading should be as smooth as ever, even with the VPN turned on, and it’s an intuitive and easy-to-use security program.
Pricing
TotalAV’s pricing starts at $19/year with the Antivirus Pro plan, offering real-time protection, a reliable system scanner, phishing prevention, and protection for four devices.
To get VPN functionality, you’ll need the Internet Security plan, which costs $39/year and also adds a password manager and protection for six devices. TotalAV offers free scans and system optimization tools, and there’s a 30-day money-back guarantee for all plans.
Who It’s Best For
TotalAV is ideal for new VPN users who want an intuitive, user-friendly experience, comprehensive real-time protection, and first-class malware removal capabilities.
It also offers excellent value for money for both individuals and families looking to protect multiple devices. I rate it as the top solution available today and the best antivirus with VPN for PC.

2. Norton Antivirus – Best Antivirus with VPN for Families
Starting Price for Antivirus with VPN | $29.99/year |
---|---|
Free Version/Trial | 30-day trial |
Key Features | Virus Protection Promise, Capable VPN, Firewall |
Antivirus Testing Results | 17.5/18 (Protection: 6/6, Performance: 5.5/6, Usability: 6/6) |
VPN Server Network | 1,500+ servers in 29+ countries |
Why We Picked It
Norton offers a strong set of antivirus and VPN features, and its parental control tools and support for unlimited devices make it ideal for families.
There’s also the Norton Virus Protection Promise, which provides assurance that all your issues will be dealt with.
Antivirus Features
- Real-Time Protection and Firewall – Norton’s real-time protection feature continuously scans your device for unusual activity and suspicious files and programs. The Smart Firewall, meanwhile, acts as a robust first line of defense for your system and goes beyond built-in OS tools.
- Security Tools – Norton’s additional features provide comprehensive protection for you and your device. These include a password manager, secure storage, effective system tune-up tools, webcam protection, a vulnerability scanner, and dark web monitoring, which scans the web for leaks of your personal information. There are also excellent parental control tools.
- Norton Virus Protection Promise – This excellent addition guarantees that Norton will remove every virus from your device. If Norton’s expert support is ultimately unable to resolve your issue, you’ll get your money back.
VPN Features
- VPN Server Network – With some 1,500 servers in 29+ countries, Norton’s network isn’t as large as those of some competitors, but it does beat TotalAV for server count.
- VPN Features – Norton’s VPN uses cutting-edge AES-256 encryption to protect your privacy. While it enables access to geo-restricted content, I found that the Norton VPN could have stronger support for P2P connections, and the kill switch and split tunneling features aren’t available on iOS.
Antivirus Testing Results
Norton got outstanding results in AV-Test’s scoring for protection and usability during its latest trials. The provider hit 100% detection rates with almost 18,000 malware samples, including common malware and zero-day threats.
Usability also got a perfect 6/6 score, and the antivirus issued zero false warnings with a sample pool of over 1 million files. You shouldn’t expect noticeable system slowdowns either, whether you’re on an average or high-end PC.
Pricing
Expanding on the $29.99/year Norton Antivirus Plus plan, Norton offers VPN protection with its 360 Standard plan for $39.99/year, while the Deluxe upgrade is currently on offer for $29.99/year.
For further functionality, higher-tier plans add parental controls, identity theft prevention, and up to 500GB of cloud backup storage with the $299.99/year Norton 360 with LifeLock Ultimate Plus plan.
To test the product before committing, you get a 30-day free trial and a 60-day money-back guarantee with all subscriptions.
Who It’s Best For
Norton Antivirus’s parental control tools and coverage for unlimited devices with top-level plans make it a great pick for families.
In addition, Norton is great for users who need thorough protection for activities like online banking and remote work on their devices and want the benefits of an integrated VPN-antivirus solution. The Virus Protection Promise is also a great bonus.

The Best VPNs with Antivirus Software Features
Many of the best antiviruses include VPN functionality today, but some of the best VPNs also include robust cybersecurity features. In this section of my shortlist, I’ll cover the security offerings provided by NordVPN and Surfshark and how they complement their privacy features.
3. NordVPN Threat Protection – Fastest VPN with Antivirus Features
Starting Price for Antivirus with VPN | $52.52/year |
---|---|
Free Version/Trial | 7-day trial on Android |
Key Features | High Speed, Secure VPN, Global VPN Network, Web Security Tools |
Antivirus Testing Results | Strong in-house testing results |
VPN Server Network | 6,700+ servers in 111+ countries |
Why We Picked It
NordVPN Threat Protection combines one of the best VPN services on the market with robust web protection capabilities.
Nord’s extensive global server network ensures fast and secure connections, while the easy-to-use antivirus features provide solid defenses against online threats.
Antivirus Features
- Security Features – NordVPN Threat Protection scans downloads for malware, ensuring threats are stopped before they can harm your device. It also blocks ads, trackers, and malicious websites, providing additional layers of protection against potential threats. In addition, the Ultimate plan includes an impressive 1TB of encrypted storage.
- Password Manager – The NordVPN package includes the NordPass password manager, which securely stores and organizes login credentials and is among the best password solutions I’ve seen.
- Dark Web Monitor – NordVPN also offers a data breach scanner that monitors the dark web for signs of compromised personal information. NordVPN doesn’t offer on-demand scans or a firewall, though, and Android, iOS, and Linux users get slightly fewer features.
VPN Features
- VPN Server Network – NordVPN’s global server network includes over 6,700 servers in 111 countries, allowing users to access content from anywhere in the world while maintaining fast and stable connections. NordVPN also supports torrenting with a range of servers optimized for P2P file sharing, and its servers are RAM-only, so no user information is ever retained.
- Proprietary VPN Protocol – NordVPN offers the proprietary NordLynx protocol, built on the WireGuard framework. This delivers lightning-fast connections without compromising on security – and the provider offers some of the fastest encrypted connections I’ve seen.
Antivirus Testing Results
In my testing, NordVPN Threat Protection was able to consistently detect and block 100% of malware downloads and malicious websites. However, I did see a slight reduction in browser speed, and NordVPN incorrectly flagged two legitimate websites from my sample as being potentially malicious.
Pricing
NordVPN’s Basic plan, at $2.99/month with a two-year subscription, only includes VPN features, but you can get Threat Protection Pro by upgrading to the second-tier Plus plan. It costs $3.89/month with a two-year subscription and lets you protect up to ten devices. You also get a password manager and data breach scanner with the package.
All NordVPN subscriptions come with a 30-day money-back guarantee, and there’s also a seven-day Android trial.
Who It’s Best For
NordVPN is the go-to option for anyone who wants a secure VPN with high-speed connections and great geo-unblocking capabilities for streaming, gaming, torrenting, and circumnavigating censorship, as I’ve seen from tests comparing it to other leading providers.
Combined with the Threat Protection toolset, it can keep malware, trackers, and internet surveillance at bay, ensuring your privacy and security on the internet. Based on my testing, it’s the best VPN with antivirus features you can buy, though antivirus products like TotalAV and Norton deliver superior security products.
For more information, read our NordVPN Threat Protection review.
Pros
- High-speed VPN with extensive global server network
- Excellent VPN security features
- Supports ten devices simultaneously
- User-friendly interface
- Top-notch privacy and security
Cons
- Full security features only for Windows and macOS
- Lacks some advanced antivirus features
4. Surfshark Antivirus – Best VPN and Antivirus for Online Privacy
Starting Price for Antivirus with VPN | $34.86/year |
---|---|
Free Version/Trial | 7-day VPN trial on iOS, Android, and macOS |
Key Features | High-Speed VPN, Unlimited VPN Connections, Email Masking |
Antivirus Testing Results | 17.5/18 (Protection: 6/6, Performance: 5.5/6, Usability: 6/6) |
VPN Server Network | 3,200+ servers in 100+ countries |
Why We Picked It
Surfshark‘s lightweight antivirus and industry-leading VPN work together to safeguard your privacy without slowing your device down.
Unlike other leading providers, Surfshark also includes unlimited VPN connections for your devices and a range of additional security tools to protect your privacy.
Antivirus Features
- Antivirus Scans – Surfshark offers an easy-to-use antivirus product that can proactively detect and block malware and phishing attempts before they can compromise your device. The provider’s threat database is updated every three hours to ensure that even brand-new threats are stopped.
- Security Tools – Surfshark’s Webcam Protection feature stops untrusted apps from accessing your camera, while the CleanWeb tool blocks ads, trackers, and suspicious websites to limit your potential exposure to malicious content. There’s also an ad and pop-up blocker, a private search engine, and a data breach monitoring tool. However, as with NordVPN Threat Protection, Surfshark Antivirus doesn’t currently include its own firewall, unlike top antivirus solutions, and only supports Windows, Mac, and Android.
- Email Masking – I rate the Alternative ID feature highly as an additional privacy tool. It creates a full fake online identity for you, including an email address and working phone number, so you can sign up for services without exposing your real personal details online.
VPN Features
- VPN Security – Surfshark uses RAM-only servers, ensuring data is never retained, and offers military-grade encryption and the secure WireGuard protocol. This impressive set of security technologies ensures your online activity will always remain secure and confidential, and the company’s no-logs policy has been independently audited and confirmed by Deloitte.
- VPN Server Network – Surfshark offers extensive global coverage with its worldwide network of 3,200+ servers in 100 countries. Its double VPN and obfuscation servers provide extra security and privacy, meanwhile, preventing your ISP from detecting that you’re using a VPN.
Antivirus Testing Results
During AV-Test’s most recent trials, Surfshark Antivirus performed extremely well and was able to neutralize 100% of threats when faced with 14,000+ malware samples.
The provider performed effectively for usability, as well, and Surfshark didn’t incorrectly flag any legitimate sites or apps and didn’t block any actions carried out while using or installing legitimate software.
However, Surfshark did slow down some activities like web browsing due to its encryption and real-time threat scanning processes.
Pricing
For antivirus functionality, you’ll need to upgrade from Surfshark Starter ($1.99/month for two years) to the Surfshark One plan, which costs $2.49/month with a two-year subscription. As well as a highly secure VPN, it provides real-time identity theft, credit card, and email breach alerts.
The antivirus protects five devices, while the VPN offers unlimited connections. Upgrading adds tools for erasing your details from databases and people-search sites.
All Surfshark plans include a 30-day money-back guarantee, and you can get a seven-day trial for Android, iOS, and macOS.
Who It’s Best For
Surfshark’s VPN and antivirus combo and its strong security features make it a great choice for protecting sensitive online activities like torrenting and banking.
With an independently audited no-logs policy and RAM-only servers, I rate Surfshark as being among the best VPN-antivirus software solutions for privacy-conscious users, and it’s a good pick for streaming, gaming, and and keeping mobile activity private.

- User-friendly interface
- Affordable pricing
- Real-time protection
Cons
- No iOS antivirus app
- Smaller network than NordVPN

5. McAfee – Best Antivirus VPN Solution for Extra Security Features
Starting Price for Antivirus with VPN | $39.99/year |
---|---|
Free Version/Trial | 30-day trial |
Key Features | Strong Security Tools, VPN, McAfee Protection Score, Firewall |
Antivirus Testing Results | 17.5/18 (Protection: 6/6, Performance: 6/6, Usability: 5.5/6) |
VPN Server Network | 2,000+ servers in 50+ countries |
Why We Picked It
McAfee’s entry-level plan includes a great antivirus VPN solution with a wide range of extra security features, including antivirus protection and a built-in VPN.
You can upgrade for a password manager, identity monitoring, system optimization, and anti-fraud tools, and there’s support for unlimited devices with mid-level plans. The antivirus also gets full marks under independent testing.
Antivirus Features
- McAfee Protection Score – McAfee Antivirus provides a Protection Score that offers a clear overview of your security status. It highlights vulnerabilities and urgent threats and offers step-by-step guidance on resolving issues, which is a key reason why I often recommend McAfee to beginners.
- Firewall – The customizable firewall is a first line of defense and filters incoming and outgoing traffic to prevent data interception and block malware. I found setting it up easy and appreciated how quiet it is, with no false alarms during everyday activities.
- Web Protection – Scam Protection, meanwhile, is powered by AI and identifies and blocks malicious websites, fraudulent texts, and social media messages.
- Security Tools – Additional features include a social privacy manager, personal data cleanup, and online account cleanup tools to help users maintain privacy on social media and remove personal data from data broker websites. These tools set McAfee apart from many competitors I’ve tested and go above and beyond for identity protection – though cloud storage isn’t a feature that’s included.
VPN Features
- VPN Server Network – McAfee’s VPN has a network of 2,000+ servers across 48 countries. This is considerably more than some other antiviruses like Avast and more even than some dedicated VPNs.
- VPN Security – McAfee uses AES-256 encryption for its VPN and includes a kill switch, providing comprehensive protection against data leaks and tracking and enabling secure and anonymous internet usage. In fact, McAfee never revealed my real information in over ten DNS and IP leak tests.
Antivirus Testing Results
McAfee is a household name in the cybersecurity world, so it’s perhaps no surprise that it identified 100% of malware samples in recent tests and achieved a respectable 17.5/18 score.
Performance was also impressive, as the software consistently beat industry averages for its impact on actions like browsing, downloading, and app installations across ten different categories.
When it came to usability, McAfee scored 5.5/6, as it incorrectly flagged one legitimate application as malware, which was nevertheless below the expected average of three and came from a set of over 1 million tested sites, processes, and programs. However, the software also had one instance of blocking user actions while using a legitimate application, leading to a slightly lower score.
Pricing
McAfee provides VPN protection straight out of the box with its Total Protection plan. It costs $39.99/year and also includes identity theft monitoring and alerts, plus a password manager. You can connect five devices, and there’s a 30-day free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Higher-tier plans expand coverage to unlimited devices, from just $49.99/year, and include features like personal data cleanup tools and identity theft protection.
Who It’s Best For
McAfee is a great choice for users looking for an affordable antivirus and VPN package with a range of extra security features for multi-layered protection.
With features like AI-powered web protection, VPN encryption, and a social manager, you get an all-in-one security solution to protect you on multiple fronts. It’s also ideal for families and teams that will get value with its support for unlimited devices on mid-tier plans.
For more information, read our McAfee review.
Pros
- Robust security suite
- VPN included with cheapest plan
- Good web attack prevention and malware detection rates
- Mid-tier plans cover unlimited devices
Cons
- No cloud storage
- Scans can be resource-intensive
6. Avast – Best Free Antivirus with VPN
Starting Price for Antivirus with VPN | $49.99/year |
---|---|
Free Version/Trial | Free plan, 30-day antivirus trial, 60-day VPN trial |
Key Features | Free Plan, Antivirus Scans, System Optimization, VPN |
Antivirus Testing Results | 18/18 (Protection: 6/6, Performance: 6/6, Usability: 6/6) |
VPN Server Network | 700 servers in 36+ countries |
Why We Picked It
Avast offers one of the best free antivirus with VPN packages. You can get more by upgrading, but it’s a solid offering that also includes phishing protection and data breach monitoring, along with other features.
Antivirus Features
- Free Antivirus VPN Plan – Avast’s free antivirus plan is packed with features that rival many paid alternatives, and its real-time threat detection can quickly identify and neutralize malware. With the Avast One Basic plan, there’s also a VPN capped at 5GB/week.
- Free Security Features – The free plan also includes a Wi-Fi inspector that scans your network for vulnerabilities, which successfully identified sub-optimal network settings during my tests. There’s also a handy privacy manager to control what details apps and social media platforms can access.
- Paid Security Features – Upgrading gets you an advanced firewall, webcam protection, and broader system optimization tools, among many other features.
VPN Features
- VPN Server Network – Avast SecureLine is the provider’s integrated VPN for encrypting your internet traffic. With access to 700 servers across 36 countries, it allows you to bypass geo-restrictions and maintain your online anonymity. While this coverage can’t match that of providers like NordVPN, it’s still enough for the streaming of some geo-blocked content.
- VPN Functionality – Compared to dedicated VPN services like Surfshark, the VPN’s capabilities for streaming and P2P connections are relatively limited. I also didn’t like that with the free plan; your data is also capped at 5GB/week, though you get unlimited traffic if you upgrade to the Ultimate package.
Antivirus Testing Results
Avast provides top-notch protection with both its free and paid versions. In testing, the antivirus neutralized 100% of 17,500+ malware samples thrown at it, including web and email threats. Performance was also solid, with system impact matching or beating industry averages.
Usability got a 6/6 score, too, as the antivirus didn’t block issue any false positives against legitimate applications. However, while it may not deliver false alarms, Avast’s free version tends to be somewhat noisy, with frequent pop-ups prompting you to upgrade.
Pricing
Although Avast offers a free plan, you won’t get an unlimited VPN and antivirus until you upgrade to the Ultimate plan. It starts at $49.99/year for one Windows PC, but you can add coverage for ten devices for $69.99/year. The package also includes a system optimizer, remote access protection, and an AntiTrack feature to hide your identity online.
Slightly confusingly, you can buy the Avast One Privacy module for $35.88/year, but you’ll need to purchase the Privacy and the Device Protection modules to get both antivirus and VPN features. Because of this, the Ultimate plan is a much better deal.
There’s a 30-day trial for the antivirus and a 30-day money-back guarantee after purchase. There’s also a 60-day VPN trial available. For additional comparison of free products, see our complete Avast vs AVG guide.
Who It’s Best For
Avast is great if you’re looking for a budget antivirus and VPN solution at a price that can’t be beaten.
This makes it a good fit for students, freelancers, and small households. It’s also considered to be one of the best Android antivirus products with a free plan, and it offers great protection for mobile with its Avast Mobile Security and Antivirus product.
For more information, read our Avast antivirus review.
Pros
- Strong free antivirus package
- Great independent testing scores
- Minimal system impact
- 60-day free VPN trial
Cons
- Free VPN limited to 5GB/week
- Confusing pricing
7. Intego – Best Mac Antivirus with VPN
Starting Price for Antivirus with VPN | $75/year |
---|---|
Free Version/Trial | 30-day trial |
Key Features | Mac Antivirus Scans, Mac Firewall, Large VPN Network |
Antivirus Testing Results | 17/18 (Protection: 5/6, Performance: 6/6, Usability: 6/6) |
VPN Server Network | 35,000+ servers in 83 countries |
Why We Picked It
Intego’s antivirus and VPN package is built and optimized for macOS, delivering smooth performance and thorough protection against Mac cyber threats.
Its features are specifically designed to address the security challenges faced by Mac users, making it ideal for Apple device owners.
Antivirus Features
- Antivirus – Intego’s VirusBarrier tool provides real-time scanning and scheduled scans to identify and quarantine malware. The advanced NetBarrier firewall monitors inbound and outbound network traffic, meanwhile, to prevent data breaches.
- Firewall and iOS Protection – Unlike most competitors, Intego’s firewall offers targeted and effective protection for macOS. A drawback I should note, though, is that there’s no standalone iPhone app. However, you can still scan your phone for viruses by connecting it as an external drive.
- System Optimization – Intego offers a range of tools to enhance your Mac’s performance. The Mac Washing Machine feature helps optimize your system by removing junk files, duplicates, and rarely-used applications, freeing up valuable storage space. In addition, you get an effective set of parental control tools for Mac, which I found easy to set up and use during testing.
VPN Features
- VPN Server Network – Intego’s VPN is a standout feature. It has an impressive network of 35,000+ servers in 83 countries, putting it among the largest VPN server networks available. All its servers allow torrenting (P2P), and they’re also optimized for streaming.
- VPN Security – The Privacy Protection VPN uses AES-256 encryption to secure your connection and includes key features like a kill switch and split tunneling. However, I’ve noticed that Intego does have a somewhat vague privacy policy, so I can’t recommend its use in countries with heavy government surveillance.
Antivirus Testing Results
AV-Comparatives and AV-Test found some limitations in Intego’s malware protection capabilities on Mac, with the software achieving a ~99.5% success rate for malware detection and removal.
However, the software didn’t have a significant impact on the installation of frequently used applications, which was below industry averages.
Pricing
Intego Mac Internet Security X9 starts at $37.50/year with a two-year subscription, but the Mac Premium Bundle X9 + VPN plan, which adds VPN functionality, costs $75/year with a two-year subscription.
The package includes a firewall, phishing protection, a system optimizer, and a backup feature and you can add cover for additional devices. If you want to test the service, there’s a 30-day trial and a 30-day refund policy after you’ve subscribed.
Who It’s Best For
Intego’s offering is an ideal solution for Mac users who want a security solution specifically designed for the operating system.
Combining antivirus, VPN, and system optimization tools, it’s a comprehensive Apple protection package, and I rate it as one of the best antiviruses for Mac available today.
For more information, read our Intego antivirus review.
Pros
- Mac-optimized security package
- Large server network
- Includes system cleanup tools and parental controls
- Easy to use
Cons
- Relatively expensive
- No mobile apps
8. Trend Micro – Best Antivirus and VPN for ChromeOS
Starting Price for Antivirus with VPN | $54.95/year |
---|---|
Free Version/Trial | 30-day trial |
Key Features | Secure Browser, Password Manager, VPN |
Antivirus Testing Results | 18/18 (Protection: 6/6, Performance: 6/6, Usability: 6/6) |
VPN Server Network | 17+ countries |
Why We Picked It
Trend Micro is one of the best antivirus and VPN security solutions for Chromebook users, with its support for ChromeOS devices. Alongside Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS apps, there’s a dedicated ChromeOS app and an extension in the Chrome Web Store, ensuring cross-device compatibility.
Antivirus Features
- Antivirus and Firewall – The Trend Micro antivirus provides comprehensive protection for ChromeOS users and uses AI to detect and block malware, ransomware, and phishing attempts in real-time. The antivirus has a similar interface across its ChromeOS, Windows, and Mac versions, and I found it responsive and easy to use regardless of the device type.
- Security Features – Trend Micro offers various web protection features that integrate with Chrome and block malicious websites and attachments. I was also impressed by its Pay Guard feature, which provides a secure browser for online banking and shopping, and there’s also a password manager on offer.
VPN Features
- VPN Server Network – Trend Micro includes the built-in VPN Proxy One Pro service. It has a relatively limited network of servers, though, with servers available in some 17 countries. This may restrict access to geo-blocked content, and I also noticed sub-optimal connection speeds of about 520Mbps on a 1Gbps baseline when connected to servers in distant regions.
- VPN Security Features – The VPN lacks some advanced features like a kill switch, unlike competitors such as NordVPN Surfshark, making it less reliable when it comes to security. I should also mention the lack of AES-256 encryption, which is the standard for premium VPN providers.
Antivirus Testing Results
Trend Micro does a great job of real-time protection, blocking 100% of web and email threats in AV-Test’s latest assessments, and its malware removal results during scans were also stellar.
The antivirus resulted in a slight slowdown during web browsing but matched or beat industry averages in 8/10 categories and scored 6/6. Lastly, for usability, it earned a 6/6 rating with no false positives, matching the results I found in my own testing.
Pricing
Trend Micro Antivirus+ Security costs just $19.95/year, but you’ll need to get the Premium Security Suite, costing $54.95/year, for VPN functionality. This plan supports ten devices, including Chromebooks, and provides features like identity theft restoration, a password manager, and up to $1 million in identity fraud insurance for US customers.
You can get a 30-day free trial with all plans, and there’s also a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Who It’s Best For
Trend Micro is ideal for Chromebook users who need a lightweight VPN with solid real-time web, email, and phishing protection.
There’s also a secure browser and password manager provided alongside the VPN functionality, so you can call on multi-layered protection for your device.
For more information, read our Trend Micro review.

- Great malware detection scores
- Dedicated ChromeOS app
- Secure browser for online finance
- Strong anti-ransomware capabilities

How I Reviewed And Tested The Best Antiviruses with VPN
- 20 VPNs Tested
- 25 Datapoints Measured
- 300+ Hours Testing
- 500+ User Reviews Read
To provide you with accurate and well-informed recommendations, I tested 20 of the top antiviruses with VPN. I based my methodology on the following criteria:
- Antivirus Features I made sure that all providers on this list offer robust antimalware protection against both known and zero-day threats. I’ve also paid special attention to extra features like firewalls and scam prevention.
- VPN Features I prioritized software with military-grade AES-256 encryption and verified no-logs policies for maximum privacy. I’ve also taken performance into account for the best possible streaming and gaming experience.
- Customer Experience Apart from my personal experience, I also researched what both cybersecurity professionals and regular users had to say about each antivirus and VPN app. I’ve also taken into account hundreds of user reviews on reputable sites like Trustpilot.
- Value for Money I set out to recommend AV+VPN apps with good quality-to-price ratios that offer extensive feature sets at a reasonable cost. I’ve also included free apps for users who need base-level privacy and protection.
Should You Get a VPN-Antivirus Bundle? Are There Disadvantages to Combined Products?
Surfshark and NordVPN are two of the best VPNs available. NordVPN also offers high-quality web protection tools, and Surfshark includes an antivirus with its mid-tier plan that gets excellent ratings in independent testing.
A combined package is convenient and will generally save you money. That said, it’s entirely possible to use different VPN and antivirus providers. Because of this, it’s worth weighing up your priorities − do you want a good overall level of device security and to occasionally use a VPN, or are lightning-fast, encrypted connections the most important thing for you?
If you want rock-solid security and a substantial global server network, you may want to buy two solutions to ensure you have the very best products in each category – but you can’t go far wrong with any of the recommendations on my shortlist. How to Choose the Best VPN and Antivirus Software
With over 450,000 new cases of malware and potentially unwanted applications released every day, having a reliable security system in place is increasingly important. When selecting an antivirus package, whether you’re looking at TotalAV or Bitdefender Antivirus, take these factors into account for internet security with a VPN:
VPN + Antivirus Cost – Many VPN and antivirus software packages offer a range of plans. Consider what best fits your budget while still offering the protection you need to ensure you get a good deal.
And remember: don’t settle for a budget product if it won’t do the job.
Features – You should consider what AV and VPN features are included with each package. This will help you determine the best antivirus-VPN combo for your individual needs.
Are there parental controls available, for example? If you want the best antivirus with VPN and password manager functionality, on the other hand, then TotalAV and NordVPN are excellent picks.
Most leading antiviruses will include a firewall, but check out our antivirus vs firewall guide on the precise differences between the two.
Performance Impact – When using Virtual Private Networks alongside antivirus software, it’s worth taking into account their impact on performance. Antivirus software secures your device but will add to the processing load, however slightly.
The best antivirus software with a VPN will strike the right balance between security and speed and have minimal system impact.
Server Count/Locations – The size of the VPN server network and its distribution around the world is an important factor when looking for the best internet security with VPN functionality.
Being able to select specific locations and having nearby servers will ensure that you can get fast connections and access the services you need.
Number of Devices – When choosing an antivirus, consider the number of devices you plan to cover with the VPN. Being able to add more devices is better, of course, and will mean you can protect your whole digital ecosystem or add your family’s devices to your subscription.
How to Use an Antivirus with a VPN
Getting started with an antivirus-VPN tool is generally fairly simple, but some people may be put off by the process. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to get started with TotalAV, which I rate as the best antivirus with VPN today, and how to use its VPN functionality.
Sign Up for TotalAV
Visit TotalAV and sign up for a subscription. You’ll need to select the product option and then “Antivirus Pro.” Next, click on “Protect Your PC Now.” You’ll then be directed to “Buy Now” and to a payment page.
Install TotalAV
You can now get on with the download process and install TotalAV on your system. Click on the downloaded file to continue the installation.
Run TotalAV
Next, you need to click on the icon that appears on your desktop to open the program − and you’re ready to go.
Turn on the VPN
With TotalAV up and running, click on the fingerprint icon on the left, select VPN, choose the country you’d like to connect to and click “Connect” − and you’re online, with TotalAV anonymizing your connection.
Run a Virus Scan
You might also want to run a virus scan. For this, go to “Malware Protection” and then “Malware Scan“. You can then select the kind of scan you want to run on your system. You’re now protected by TotalAV, the best anti-virus with VPN.
Can I Use a Free Antivirus with a VPN?
Avast and McAfee are the best free antivirus products on my list of the top antivirus services with VPN – but only Avast offers antivirus and VPN protection on a free plan.
These plans rarely offer additional security features that premium antivirus programs with VPN services do, such as online banking protection, parental controls, integrated firewalls, and ransomware protection.
Most of these free plans also offer very little monthly bandwidth, and they only provide support through their help pages and forums, with technical support being a restricted paid feature.
For robust protection against malware and computer viruses and a scalable VPN solution – along with all the extra features you get with a premium antivirus plan – it’s best to opt for a paid subscription rather than focus on a free version.
Conclusion – What’s the Best Antivirus with VPN Features?
If you’re looking for the best, most cost-effective solution to improve your online security, I recommend using a VPN and antivirus combo product. This will shield you from online threats, like viruses and malware, and hide your activities from your ISP, third-party advertisers, and malicious individuals – providing you with comprehensive online security.
Based on my research, I rate TotalAV as being the best antivirus and VPN service on the market today. TotalAV includes a VPN, real-time malware and ransomware protection, and a password manager, and its price makes it one of the cheapest products on the market. Given its excellent security capabilities, I rate it as the best antivirus-VPN package you can buy.
