The whole game can be played in co-op with up to four players, increasing the chaos. The loot is randomized, making each gun unique to use. Each character comes with a skill tree and abilities. Apart from RPG elements, the focus remains on shooting and looting, making Borderlands 3 a wild ride, especially with friends.

5. Metro Exodus

Developer A4 Games’ Metro series ends with the excellent Metro Exodus. The first two games were claustrophobic and featured closed levels (set in a metro), but Exodus opened the series up. Featuring three huge maps to explore, the last Metro game still has meaningful exploration and interactions.

The guns are powerful, but the ammo is scarce, forcing players to find new ways to kill enemies. As with previous games, Stealth is an excellent option, and so is avoiding combat altogether. No EXP system is in place, so fighting mutated enemies is less rewarding. It’s one of the best single-player FPS games and still quite a looker on modern machines that can handle ray tracing.

4. Half-Life: Alyx

Half-Life: Alyx is among the best FPS VR games available and proves that there is a demand for AAA VR games. It requires a VR headset to be played (although a flat-screen mod is available too). While it’s not Half-Life 3, it does meaningfully evolve the Valve narrative-driven formula.

VR has introduced a whole new layer of interactivity. Combining that with Valve’s Source Engine’s excellent physics results in superb immersion. The motion control shooting takes a while but is responsive and action-packed. There are horror elements in the game, too, making players cautious of turning around corners.

3. Titanfall 2

Titanfall 2 could easily be one of the best single-player FPS games ever, thanks to its stellar campaign. While short, the campaign delivers an engaging and emotional narrative worth playing. However, Titanfall 2 is not a single-player game; it also comes with an innovative multiplayer mode.

The multiplayer in Titanfall 2 is fast, frantic, and has mechs. Yes, players can call in their mech from the sky in matches, use it to take down mech-less players or take on enemy mechs. The movement is fluid, too, with wall runs, grapple guns, and slides. The spirit of this game may live on in Apex Legends, but it’s hard to let go of the tragedy that befell this title at launch.

2. Destiny 2

The biggest strength of Destiny 2 is shooting. Each gun feels different and impactful in the MMO FPS game. Bungie has a long history of making great firearms in games. The developers have proven themselves with the original Halo games, and Destiny 2 retains that weapon supremacy.

Destiny 2 also offers character classes, unique weapons, and many missions to grind. While the missions can get stale, the moment-to-moment shooting is incredibly satisfying. The shooting is so good that players gladly grind the same maps, areas, and bosses just to get the next shiny gun. 1. Doom Eternal

One of the few games that started the FPS boom in the early 90s, Doom is reinventing the FPS wheel. Doom Eternal reimagines the classic for a modern audience and delivers on all fronts. The shooting is impactful, rewarding, and just feels fantastic. The boom of a double-barrel shotgun, the thump of a heavy cannon, and the booms of BFG9000 are all amazing.

Doom Eternal is highly agile, giving Doom Slayer many movement options. It also satisfyingly celebrates gore and violence. Pulling off glory kills explodes most enemies like bloody pinatas, and recovering health is an added cherry.
