20 Best PS5 Games to Play in 2025
20. Astro’s Playroom
- Highlights: Single-player platformer
- Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
- Developer: Team Asobi
- Availability & Cost: Free on PlayStation
This game has one amazing aspect: it comes preloaded on your PS5, so it is free to all and is intended for gamers and their families. The idea behind this game is a free tech demo for the DualSense controller, where you explore four worlds with creative gameplay.
Even in 2025, the game remains fun and relevant to play. Excitingly, the release of a full-length sequel of the game is here, Astro Bot, and it appears on our list, too.
19. Rise of the Ronin
- Highlights: Intense boss fights, captivating narrative, open world
- Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
- Developer: Team Ninja
- Availability & Cost: $69.99 on PlayStation
If you enjoy challenging PS5 games then you’ll want to give Rise of the Ronin a shot. This punishing open world experience is made by Team Ninja, behind the Ninja Gaiden series and the Nioh duology. The title takes cues from Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed franchise, with clear inspiration from Sucker Punch Productions’ Ghost of Tsushima for a thrilling samurai experience.
What’s most exciting about Rise of the Ronin is how it presents events of real history from the time period of the late 19th century. You play as a Blade Twin tasked with either protecting Japan from the invasion of the West or embracing change and opening trade routes. Your other Blade Twin plays a part in the narrative we won’t give away here; as the Veiled Edge, you’ll seek change in Japan one way or another.
18. Deathloop
- Highlights: Open-ended immersive sim gameplay
- Publisher: Bethesda Softworks
- Developer: Arkane Lyon
- Availability & Cost: $59.99 on PlayStation
Arkane has established a pedigree for creating some of the best immersive sims on the market, particularly with the Dishonored games, and Deathloop doesn’t disappoint in this respect. With its retro-futuristic 1960s-inspired visuals and interesting story, this is one of the best PS5 games to play even in 2025.
You play as Colt Vahn and you’re stuck in an endless time loop. Your sole purpose in life then becomes to break the cycle and reset things, but it’s easier said than done. There’s a mystery to uncover with the Visionaries (the game’s bosses) that need to be dispatched first. Making matters worse is Julianna, head of AEON security, who is employed to stop you at all costs. Deathloop may not be as endlessly replayable as the studio’s other games, but it’s a must-play for that first go around.
17. Gran Turismo 7
- Highlights: Racing simulation game, single-player and multiplayer modes available
- Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
- Developer: Polyphony Digital
- Availability & Cost: $69.99 on PlayStation
As the 7th installment in the Gran Turismo series, this game includes the return of the single-player campaign, GT Simulation Mode. It’s easily the best PS5 racing game on the platform, and now it even supports PSVR 2 for unparalleled immersion.
Other returning features include traditional racing tracks and vehicles, Special Events, Championships, Driving School, Tuning Parts Shop, Used Cars dealership, and GT Auto, as well as the new GT Sport Mode, Brand Central, and Discover (now known as Showcase) from Gran Turismo Sport.
To access features such as multiplayer, all tracks, and automobiles, you must complete missions (Menu Books) in the GT Café.
16. Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut
- Highlights: Thrilling combat, unforgettable story
- Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
- Developer: Sucker Punch Productions
- Availability & Cost: $69.99 on PlayStation
While technically a swansong game for the PS4, the Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut feels more at home on the PS5 when it was released back in 2021. You’re getting the definitive experience here with improved resolution, graphics, a higher framerate, the addition of an authentic Japanese lip sync, and the addition of the Iki Island DLC.
Ghost of Tsushima stars Jin Sakai, a samurai wounded early in a bout against an invading Mongrel force, who must learn to fight dirty in order to save his homeland. The title features an excellent story, a dynamic combat system, exciting open world exploration, and surprisingly deep multiplayer with its Legends mode. Ghost of Tsushima Director’s cut is a must-have for the PS5, even if you played the PS4 version.
Furthermore, there’s a sequel to the franchise in the works with Ghost of Yōtei, which is expected to be released sometime in 2025. It’s set a staggering 400 years after Ghost of Tsushima with a whole new setting and main protagonist, but it could carry on the legacy well.
15. Sackboy: A Big Adventure
- Highlights: Innovative levels, beautiful graphics
- Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
- Developer: Sumo Digital
- Availability & Cost: $59.99 on PlayStation
If you’ve been playing PlayStation games since the 2000s, then you’ll be immediately familiar with who Sackboy is. The character starred in the Little Big Planet trilogy on the PS3 (and later the PS4), as well as handheld spin-offs and even a kart racer. However, in Sackboy: A Big Adventure, the clothed crusader got his own stripped-back 3D platformer, and it stands as one of the best PS5 games of all time.
While you don’t have the advanced suite of creation tools as in the LittleBigPlanet series, Sackboy: A Big Adventure doubles down on the highly inventive level design of that franchise to great success. Across 90 levels and six worlds, such as The Soaring Summit, The Colossal Canopy, and The Wonderplane, you can either play solo or go in with a friend or family member. For this reason, we consider Sackboy: A Big Adventure among the best co-op PS5 games in 2025.
14. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown
- Highlights: 2.5D side-scrolling action-adventure platformer
- Publisher: Ubisoft Entertainment
- Developer: Ubisoft Montpellier
- Availability & Cost: $39.99 on PlayStation
If you’re old enough, you remember the original Prince of Persia game published in 1989 – a side-scroller with pixelated graphics, simple platforming puzzles, and basic fighting mechanics.
This latest 2024 installment is a considerable jump-up in quality and graphics but still retains a lot of the main elements of the Prince of Persia series. It has Metroidvania aspects since the game area is interconnected and full of shortcuts and secret rooms, and you must solve puzzles to advance.
If you enjoyed the previous installments, you’ll love this one; it’s a modern take offering a fresh yet familiar experience for Prince of Persia fans, making this game one of the trending PS5 games for the moment.
13. Dragon’s Dogma 2
- Highlights: Fantasy adventure action RPG
- Publisher: Capcom
- Developer: Capcom
- Availability & Cost: $69.99 on PlayStation
Dragon’s Dogma is a single-player, narrative-driven action RPG that allows you to customize your experience, including the appearance of your Arisen, vocation, party, and how to approach various scenarios.
On your trip, you’ll be joined by Pawns, fascinating otherworldly beings, in an adventure so unique that you’ll feel as if you’re with other players while on your own adventure.
All these components are enhanced with physics technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and cutting-edge graphics, all made possible by the RE Engine, to create a genuinely immersive fantasy world in Dragon’s Dogma 2.
12. The Last of Us Part 1
- Highlights: Zombie action, survival, heartbreaking story
- Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
- Developer: Naughty Dog
- Availability & Cost: $69.99 on PlayStation
The Last of Us Part 1 is a landmark release for the PS5, which is a ground-up remake of the original 2013 game utilizing the power of Sony’s latest console. This means in-engine cutscenes, intelligent gameplay revisions (carried over from The Last of Us Part II), and updated framerates and resolutions for the definitive experience.
If you played either The Last of Us on PS3 or The Last of Us Remastered on PS4 and weren’t impressed, then this version isn’t going to sway you. However, for those who may be fans of the HBO series and want to experience the source material or go in blind for the first time, then The Last of Us Part 1 is a must-play title; easily among the best PS5 games of all time.
11. Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree
- Highlights: Action RPG, single and multiplayer available
- Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment; JP: FromSoftware
- Developer: FromSoftware
- Availability & Cost: $39.99 on PlayStation (+$59.99 if you need to buy the base game)
Thanks to the DLC, the hype surrounding Elden Ring is pretty high right now – it has topped the Steam charts ranked by weekly active users in the US for three weeks straight.
The expansion features a new story set in the Realm of Shadow, complete with intrigue, deadly dungeons, new foes, and weapons.
In case you missed the Elden Ring train when it first came out in 2022, here’s your chance to hop aboard, finish the game, and take on the DLC so you can try out one of the best games for PlayStation 5.
10. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
- Highlights: Exciting multiplayer, lengthy campaign
- Publisher: Activision
- Developer: Treyarch (with help from other internal studios)
- Availability & Cost: $69.99 on PlayStation
Black Ops 6 is the latest Call of Duty game and one of the best in the long-running franchise. The title feels like a return to form for the series after a string of less-than-stellar games, excelling thanks to a lengthy campaign, back-to-basics multiplayer, an exciting zombies mode, and the implementation of the Omnimovement system.
The Black Ops series usually brings a level of innovation with each entry, and that’s true with the latest instalment as well. Omnimovement is more than a gimmick; you can dive and slide in any direction, adding a new dimension to combat. Strengthening the foundations are the smaller maps, which are incredibly detailed and on a much smaller scale than in iterations such as Modern Warfare 3 and Vanguard (leading to a faster and more enjoyable experience).
For more information, read our Black Ops 6 campaign review and our Black Ops 6 multiplayer review, which goes into more detail about what makes this year’s Call of Duty game a highlight.
9. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Highlights: Action-adventure, single player
- Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
- Developer: Insomniac Games
- Availability & Cost: $69.99 on PlayStation
Spider-Man 2, the third game in the Marvel’s Spider-Man series, follows Peter Parker and Miles Morales. Building on the previous games, it adds new web-based gadgets and suits, including Peter’s symbiote costume with special abilities.
The open world is full of side missions and collectibles, and you can switch between Parker and Morales to complete unique objectives for each character.
This game expands on the well-loved mechanics, making it a must-play for fans, an easy addition to our list of most popular PS5 games, and certainly one of the cool games on PS5 to play this year.
8. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
- Highlights: Action RPG, single player
- Publisher: Square Enix
- Developer: Square Enix
- Availability & Cost: $69.99 on PlayStation
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the second installment of the Final Fantasy VII remake series, which chronicles the story of the genre-defining RPG over three separate games.
This new adventure is open to all players, including those who have yet to experience Final Fantasy VII Remake or the PlayStation original. Expect a new level of cinematic storytelling, fast-paced combat, and extensive exploration of a massive environment.
7. God of War Ragnarök
- Highlights: Brutal boss fights, exciting adventure
- Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
- Developer: Santa Monica Studio
- Availability & Cost: $69.99 on PlayStation
It’s hard to talk about the best PS5 games to play in 2025 without giving God of War Ragnarök its flowers. The second instalment in the Norse saga sees Kratos and an older Atreus journeying through the Nine Realms on an adventure to stop Odin (and other gods) by any means necessary. It’s a brutal and fearsomely captivating experience, which thoroughly builds on the foundations laid by God of War 2018 with some smart new changes.
God of War Ragnarök isn’t going to covert fans who were put off by the changes of its predecessor, as the series moved away from the over-the-top spectacle fighter genre to a more traditional over-the-shoulder game. However, if you’re all about the story, then Ragnarök delivers in abundance. While you wait for a potential third game to be announced, you can read how to play the God of War games in order.
6. Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2
- Highlights: Bloody action, co-op multiplayer, thrilling story
- Publisher: Focus Entertainment
- Developer: Saber Interactive
- Availability & Cost: $69.99 on PlayStation
It’s been a long time, but one of the most anticipated PS5 games has finally arrived. Space Marine 2 has been well worth the wait as Saber Interactive’s sequel delivers the action, story, and intensity that the franchise is known for. In this action game, you’ll be tearing your way through Tyranids (sadly, no Orcs this time) alone or with friends in co-op multiplayer for the definitive Warhammer experience.
There’s been no shortage of great Warhammer 40,000 games in recent memories, with the likes of Boltgun and Dark Tide, but Space Marine 2 takes things to another level. The third-person shooter combat is among the best seen in any game of its type, with gorgeous animations and visceral shooting. It also happens to be one of the best-looking PS5 games, too, bolstered by the developer’s aptly-titled Swarm engine for hordes of enemies to slay through. For the Emperor!

5. Returnal
- Highlights: Third-person shooter, roguelike
- Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
- Developer: Housemarque
- Availability & Cost: $69.99 on PlayStation
Returnal is a third-person shooter video game with roguelike aspects that fall within the psychological horror genre.
In a futuristic science fiction environment, the player controls Selene Vassos, a space pilot with a suit and high-tech weapons who is lost on the alien planet Atropos and trapped in a temporal loop. After each death, Selene is revived, continuing her journey across exotic surroundings and confronting extraterrestrial beings with evolving visions in an ever-changing world.
Returnal’s generative universe is designed for maximum replayability, allowing you to pick yourself up after defeat and face new, developing difficulties with each rebirth – making this game one of the top PlayStation 5 games, even though it was released in 2021.
4. Horizon Forbidden West
- Highlights: Action single-player RPG
- Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
- Developer: Guerrilla Games
- Availability & Cost: $49.99 on PlayStation
This game, a sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn (2017), takes place in a post-apocalyptic version of the Western United States, recovering from an extinction event caused by a rogue robot swarm.
Assuming control of Aloy, you must travel to the Forbidden West to discover the cause of a deadly sickness that kills everything it infects. You can explore the open environment and fulfill tasks by fighting machine creatures and hostile rebels using ranged and melee weaponry.
Forbidden West added new gameplay concepts to the franchise, including additional traversal tools, underwater exploration, and enhanced melee fighting. If you’ve already played the game, there’s also the DLC, Burning Shores.
3. Alan Wake 2
- Highlights: Dual narrative, engrossing survival horror
- Publisher: Epic Games Publishing
- Developer: Remedy Entertainment
- Availability & Cost: $59.99 on PlayStation
Without a doubt, Alan Wake 2 is among the best PS5 horror games you can play in 2025. It made a shocking impression when it debuted last year, and the admiration has only grown since; unlike the first Alan Wake, the sequel was a smash-hit success out of the gate, and for good reason. Here you play as the titular tortured author, as well as series newcomer FBI agent Saga Anderson.
As well as the expected flashlight-based survival horror shooting, Alan Wake 2 impresses with its depth of investigation mechanics; you’ll find clues to solve murders to solve a dual narrative that interweaves between Wake and Anderson. Remedy has been crafting some of the best story games on PS5 for some time, such as Control, and this frightening sequel sees the studio at the top of its craft. It’s also genuinely terrifying, too.
2. Astro Bot
- Highlights: Gorgeous levels, interesting mechanics, collect-a-thon
- Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
- Developer: Team Asobi
- Availability & Cost: $59.99 on PlayStation
A recent addition to the best PS5 games, Astro Bot is an absolute joy to play from start to finish. Hot off the heels of Astro’s Playroom, essentially a tech demo featuring exciting levels, Team Asobi delivers a feature-length adventure of around 10 to 15 hours, spanning six worlds and over 80 levels to explore.
Astro Bot is on a mission to rescue 300 bots that were lost in an incident with a space alien when the mothership (the PS5 console) crash lands. It’s your job to traverse these stages, featuring leading level design, to complete the roster. You’ll spot famous faces, such as Nathan Drake, Kratos, Solid Snake, and countless others on your journey; far be it from us to ruin the surprises.

1. Baldur’s Gate 3
- Highlights: Role-playing game (RPG), turn-based combat, Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) adventure
- Publisher: Larian Studios
- Developer: Larian Studios
- Availability & Cost: $69.99 on PlayStation
Baldur’s Gate 3 is a huge favorite among gamers in 2024 for its gameplay, narrative, and production quality. It definitely ranks as one of the top-rated PS5 games, having won numerous Game of the Year (GOTY) awards.
It is the first game to win GOTY prizes at all five major video game award ceremonies: the Golden Joystick accolades, The Game Awards, the D.I.C.E. Awards, the Game Developers Choice Awards, and the British Academy Games Awards.
So it’s a pretty easy number one on our list of top 10 PS5 games in 2025 (and this author is quite partial to the game, having sunk 300+ hours into it).
