Release Date: September 12, 2024

If you’re looking for a game that truly reveres early 2000s horror, Hollowbody might just be the thing you’re looking for. In a tech-noir survival horror short story set in an abandoned British city, players take on the role of Mica, a black market shipper who enters a no-go zone to find her friend, Sasha.

Mica will need to solve puzzles and manage their resources to survive. But the city’s decaying environment will not be the only challenge: something, maybe someone, is watching and waiting. It’s one of the best upcoming indie horror games, and its creepy art style makes a strong impression.

2. Mouthwashing

Developer: Wrong Organ
Publisher: CRITICAL REFLEX
Release Date: September 26, 2024

The most important thing you need to know about Mouthwashing is this: God is not watching. And if that doesn’t scare you, then wait until you hear about the premise of this story-rich, upcoming psychological horror game from Wrong Organ and Critical Reflex.

Set on The Tulpar, a shipwrecked space freighter that only has 6 months of power left and a diminishing number of rations, the remaining crew have taken their revenge out on their captain, Curly. But with little else to do but die, it doesn’t take long before carnage and depravity run rampant throughout the spaceship.

Developer: Black Tabby Games
Publisher: Black Tabby Games
Release Date: Fall 2024

Black Tabby Games is a developer that isn’t afraid to make you uncomfortable, and they certainly do that and more with their horror visual novel Slay the Princess. In it, you are told by a mysterious narrator to enter the shack and (as the title says) slay the princess that lies inside. She’ll beg, she’ll plead, and she’ll manipulate, and as the player, it’s up to you how you go about each and every playthrough. It’s scarily good.

The game was originally released back in October 2023 for PC, but now Slay The Princess – The Pristine Cut is on its way to consoles, with a new edition promising a lot more story, gore, and overall content. If you’re not a fan of visual novel horror, trust us when we say that this will be the game that’ll change your mind. Judging by the PC version, upcoming visual novel horror games don’t get as good as this.

4. Until Dawn Remake

Developer: Ballistic Moon
Publisher: PlayStation Publishing
Release Date: October 4, 2024

Originally developed by Supermassive Games, Until Dawn quickly became a cinematic masterpiece of horror for gamers. It had everything: a group of teens you couldn’t help but love to hate, a haunting atmosphere, and more blood than you knew what to do with. It’s not hard to see why the game helped make Supermassive a horror juggernaut – nor why the remake for PC and consoles has fans so excited.

Now rebuilt from the ground up by Ballistic Moon, Until Dawn promises the same amount of scares and gore galore but with additional storylines and choices that weren’t in the original. So, while the majority of the game will be reminiscent of the original, there will still be new exciting moments for fans old and new to uncover. It’s an upcoming PS5 horror game to have on the radar.

5. Silent Hill 2

Developer: Bloober Team

Release Date: October 8, 2024

Bloober Team’s take on the legendary Silent Hill 2 is nearly here. Bloober is well-known for its Layers of Fear games, a series that often embraces psychological horror in the most gruesome of ways, and Blair Witch, a game revered for its cinematic mastery. It’s the biggest upcoming survival horror game of this year.

Now Bloober Team is taking on Silent Hill 2. As James Sutherland, players return to a town known as Silent Hill. The reason for James’ return? A letter from his wife that tells him to. The problem with that is that James’ wife is dead – so who could possibly be writing to him? As James, players will take on monsters, solve puzzles, and more in search of that very answer.

6. Post Trauma

Publisher: Raw Fury
Release Date: October 29, 2024

If you’re in the know when it comes to upcoming survival horror games, you’ll no doubt already know about Red Soul Games and Raw Fury’s Post Trauma. This realistic horror adventure combines the topic of mental health and anxiety with the gruesome and gritty surroundings of the horror genre.

As train conductor Roman (Togo Igawa), players awake to find themselves in a surreal dimension. Not only is Roman faced with a land tormented by terror, but he must also go up against nightmarish abominations that wish to destroy him. It’s up to the player whether Roman avoids these creatures or faces them head-on. It’s one of the biggest upcoming horror games on Steam.

7. The Occultist

Developer: Daloar
Publisher: Daedalic Entertainment
Release Date: 2025

A first-person psychological and supernatural horror, The Occultist is the debut game from developer Daloar. From the trailer and gameplay shown, it looks mighty compelling. It looks to be one of the most frightening upcoming Xbox horror games.

Protagonist Alan Rebels is a well-known supernatural and occult investigator, but this experience looks to be his most terrifying yet. After his father’s disappearance, Rebels has no choice but to return to the island of GodStone to find answers – with nothing on him to protect him outside of a mystical pendulum.

8. Directive 8020

Developer: Supermassive Games
Publisher: Supermassive Games
Release Date: 2025

Supermassive Games returns with yet another new upcoming horror game. This time, instead of the survival horror taking place on Earth—and its many different locations, timeframes, and more—players will be running and hiding from the threats of space.

The crew of the colony ship Cassiopeia is in a bind: Earth is dying, and humanity is relying on them to succeed in their mission. However, as they soon discover after crash-landing on a planet, they aren’t the only civilization out there. Alien lifeforms that can impersonate the humans they hunt mean that nobody is safe; nobody can be trusted.

9. Little Nightmares 3

Developer: Supermassive Games
Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment
Release Date: 2025

Little Nightmares is a beloved series, and it’s not hard to see why. While it has a cutesy element, it doesn’t overpower the unsettling nature that so clearly shines through with each game that’s been released. Little Nightmares 3 is easily the biggest upcoming multiplayer horror game.

This time around, you (and a friend, if you’d prefer to play with someone by your side) follow the journey of Low and Alone. These adorable but disturbing characters band together to search for a way that leads them out of Nowhere. Players will need to work together to escape and face their childhood fears that have held them back.

10. Phasmophobia

Phasmophobia sees you and a group of friends attempting to hunt down ghosts

Developer: Kinetic Games
Publisher: Kinetic Games
Release Date: October – November 2024

Who ya gonna call? Phasmophobia took the gaming world by storm when it was first released into Early Access in 2020, and ever since it’s remained one of the must-play multiplayer games among horror aficionados. It isn’t hard to see why, as the premise – teaming up to take down demonic and spiritual entities – is pretty unique in the gaming space.

The only downside is that the game wasn’t available for console users. That’s set to change, however, with the game releasing for Xbox Series X/S and PS5 sometime during Phasmophobia’s Halloween event, which usually takes place between mid-October and early November. Upcoming horror games in 2024 don’t get bigger than this on consoles.

The Bottom Line

No matter which sub-genre of scares you’re interested in, there’s an upcoming horror game for you coming sooner rather than later. Halloween isn’t far away, which is when many of these experiences debut, but even those releases pushed into next year and beyond are showing some serious promise. Just remember to play with the lights down and the volume up.
