Applicability Statement 1 (AS1)

Definition - What does Applicability Statement 1 (AS1) mean?

Applicability Statement 1 (AS1) is a standard based on Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) and Secure Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (S/MIME) that provides consistency for email communications between businesses. Put together by EDI over the Internet, a subgroup of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), AS1 provides a security standard and authentication for emails.

Techopedia explains Applicability Statement 1 (AS1)

Beyond handling the security aspects of human transmission, AS1 also provides for message integrity and privacy for emails. This is achieved using encryption and other technologies such as digital signatures. AS1 also provides consistent guarantees that the recipient has received the message.

AS1 is part of a series of standards evolving to meet the needs of email users, including AS2, AS3 and AS4.
