What does Nanofabrication mean?

Nanofabrication refers to the design process of nanomaterial and devices that are measured in nanometers. One nanometer is one millionth (10-9) of a meter. Nanofabrication helps in parallel processing of material over a large scale. It is a cost-effective method whereby large-scale economy is manufactured using the same machinery and design and small amount of material.

Nanofabrication uses state-of-the-art technology and is mostly used in manufacturing of high-tech microchips, microcontrollers and other types of silicon chips. Nanofabrication is also a growing interest for scientists working in the military, aerospace and medical industries. Nanofabrication deals with the properties of atoms in a material and finding ways to save space, time and money compared to large devices.

Integrated circuits (ICs), which have been a crucial part of electronic devices for many decades, have been revolutionized by the introduction of nanofabrication. The circuits are now fabricated atom by atom, analogous to brick by brick construction of a building, thanks to programmable nanomachines.
