The Health Information Exchange (HIE) is a system that is used for the dissemination of medical or healthcare data between different parties. It is a component of the Health Information Technology (HIT) program used by U.S. government agencies.
HIE covers the concept that medical practices can submit healthcare data for national research and analysis and generally supports the idea of portable information. To facilitate HIE, groups and communities have been formed with specific directives and goals, including lowering information exchange costs and compliance with privacy laws.
