Techopedia explains Database Analyst

A database analyst belongs to a subgroup of the database administration staff. The database analyst typically maintains data storage and assesses database design. One aspect of this job involves determining how keys and other tools or markers are used to identify and retrieve individual records. Often, a database analyst works with a team that physically supports servers and other parts of the system in order to keep it working well. Beyond that, a database analyst is concerned with studying how a database is organized and how the data in it is used by the corporation.

A database analyst may also be involved in:

  • Maintaining data confidentiality
  • Data organization or "culling"
  • Adoption of new data management strategies
  • Alteration of database descriptions
  • Addition and subtraction of different fields or tables

A database analyst may also study other parts of the corporate data system structures, such as corporate data warehouses that provide a central repository for data. One of the big challenges in today's world of business data is how to best aggregate numerous data sets and combine them into something that is actionable and efficient. In this case, the database analyst plays a major role.
