How Do Teams Qualify for the Dota 2 International?
There are two ways teams can secure a place at The International 2024.
The first is through direct invitation, which is often based on performance in other major Dota 2 tournaments throughout the year. Teams that made it through this way are:
- Team Spirit
- Xtreme Gaming
- Team Falcons
- Team Liquid
- Gaimin Gladiators
- BetBoom Team
The remaining teams wishing to compete at The International esports tournament must navigate the Regional Qualifiers. Here, ten slots are available, distributed across various global regions as follows:
- China and North America: 3 slots
- Eastern Europe and South America: 3 slots
- Southeast Asia and Western Europe: 4 slots
The qualification process begins with the Open Qualifiers, which are open to any team in the respective regions. These took place between June 3rd and June 8th.
Following the Open Qualifiers, the Regional Qualifiers occurred as per the following schedule:
- China and North America: June 9th to 13th

The International Prize Pool
The prize pool for The International 2024 kicks off with a base amount of $1.6 million, yet this is just the starting line.
From every Compendium sold, 25% of the revenue is added to the initial sum. Historically, this approach has catapulted the total to impressive heights, such as over $40 million in 2021.
However, recent trends indicate a slowdown in growth. For example, last year’s prize pool only reached about $3.38 million, markedly lower than previous years, due in part to the Compendium being released just three weeks before the event.
How to Bet on The International 2024: Dota 2 Betting Markets
The hype and fanfare leading up to The International 2024 have driven Dota 2 betting sites in the US to launch a variety of odds and markets. Below are some of the most popular ones you’ll encounter:
- Futures: Long before The International 2024 kicks off, several gambling sites allow you to predict overarching outcomes, such as the tournament winner or teams reaching the finals. Such wagers are locked in at odds set at the time of betting, which can be significantly more valuable than betting on a team after they’ve already shown strong performance in the tournament.
- Match Winner (Moneyline): This one’s easy. Choose a team to win the match. You can place this bet before the game starts or live, with Dota 2 odds changing as the match unfolds.
- Map Winner: Focuses on individual map victories within a match. Select the team you predict will win a particular map. This is particularly useful if you have insights into how teams perform on specific maps.
- First Blood: Here, you’d be putting down money on which team will get the first kill of the game. First Blood bets are resolved quickly, making them ideal for short-term engagement without impacting the overall match result.
- Hero Kills: This is another Dota 2 prop bet that focuses on the total number of kills a specific hero will achieve, often presented as an over/under bet.
- Total Maps: Bet on the total number of maps that will be played in a match series, like in a Best of 3 format. “Under 2.5 maps” suggests a 2-0 outcome; “Over 2.5 maps” requires a 2-1 result for either side.
- Roshan Kill: The objective here is to predict whether Roshan will be killed during the match. And, if yes, which team will kill him.
- Handicap Betting: Bookmakers assign a plus or minus map differential to adjust the perceived strength gap between teams. For example, a +1.5 handicap on one side means they can lose the series but must win at least two maps (in a Bo5 format) for the bet to pay out.
- Structure Betting: These are all bets related to in-game structures; examples include the first tower destroyed, the total towers destroyed by both teams, and which team destroys the most.
- Total Time: You can predict whether the game’s duration will be over or under a set time. Factors to consider include team composition, historical performance, and strategic approaches that could prolong or shorten the match.
The International 2024 Betting Odds
As the excitement builds for the Dota 2 International 2024, a glance at the current betting landscape reveals some interesting insights into potential outcomes.
Focusing on the ‘Region of Winner’ market, Western Europe emerges as a slight favorite at BetOnline with odds at +110, whereas Eastern Europe follows closely at +200, indicating solid contention.
For the ‘To Reach the Final’ market, Team Spirit and Gaimin Gladiators are neck and neck, both pegged at +100. However, the odds significantly lengthen to +2900 and +3900 for teams like Talon Esports and Beastcoast.
Additional markets are expected to roll out as we approach the starting date of September 4th. If you’re still new to the scene, take some time to go through our detailed guide on how to bet on esports.
