Pete Carroll Coaching History & Super Bowl Wins

Carroll’s first official coaching job was at the University of Pacific, where he was enrolled as a graduate assistant. He worked with the team for three years while obtaining his master’s, working with wide receivers and secondary.

On his road to the NFL, he worked as a coordinator for a number of universities, including Arkansas, Iowa State, Ohio State, and North Carolina State. His first NFL job was with the Buffalo Bills as a defensive backs coach in 1984.

He spent a decade on different NFL coaching staffs, including the Minnesota Vikings and New York Jets. Eventually, he received his first NFL head coaching gig in 1994 with the Jets in 1994.

After being fired following a 6-10 season, Caroll was hired on as the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers from 1995 to 1996. He spent another two years in the NFL, as the New England Patriots head coach, replacing the legendary Bill Parcells.

In 2000, he signed a deal with the USC Trojans and served as the head coach there for nine years. During his time at USC, Carroll developed the Trojans into one of the top football programs in the country. He won two national championships with USC and guided the Trojans to seven PAC-10 Championships before leaving for the NFL once again to coach the Seattle Seahawks. Carroll has been with the Seahawks since 2010.

Nearly four years later after being hired by Seattle, Caroll guided the Seahawks to their first and only Super Bowl win defeating the Denver Broncos in 2014.

Seattle went to the Super Bowl again the following season before losing to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots 28-24. With 25 seconds left and the ball on the 1-yard line, Carroll elected to pass the ball, resulting in a game-winning interception by Patriots’ cornerback Malcolm Butler. Many NFL experts regard it as one of the worst play calls in NFL history.
