Top 10 Tallest NBA Players Ever

It’s no surprise that the tallest NBA players consistently lead the league in blocked shots; height is as important to NBA defense as a lime slice in a Captain Morgan and Coke.

One of the two tallest NBA players ever stands second all-time among the blocks-per-game leaders. More on him later.

I met the all-time best in blocks per game, 7ft4 Mark Eaton, shook his hand and fully realized what his kind of size meant to an NBA team. His hand seemingly wrapped twice around mine.

That encounter underscored the world’s fascination with NBA big guys.

Read on to find more about the hype with height, who’s the tallest right now, and who’s the tallest NBA player of all time.

Tallest Current NBA Players

Our focus is on the “bigs” – those far north of the average height of professional basketball players.

For tall players to be successful in today’s NBA, height isn’t enough.

A tall player must also be skilled in at least one specialized area, and these tallest current NBA players fit the bill.

Most of these players excel in blocking shots, but several are efficient 3-point shooters.

That’s something unheard of just 20 years ago when the league’s dinosaurs roamed the courts, setting up primarily very near the basket.

Boban Marjanovic 7ft4 Houston Rockets

Kristaps Porzingis 7ft2 Boston Celtics
Moses Brown 7ft2 Portland Trail Blazers
Chet Holmgren 7ft1 Oklahoma City Thunder
Luke Kornet 7ft1 Boston Celtics

Tallest Player in the NBA Right Now

The most exciting player to enter the NBA in years, Victor Wembanyama, also happens to be the tallest NBA player in the league today.

The skilled Frenchman stands 7ft4 and is every bit the “Unicorn” as Boston Celtics big man Kristaps Porzingis, who was given that moniker early in his NBA career due to his rare combination of height and skill.

“Wemby” wowed the international scouts during his playing days overseas from age 17-19.

His maturity and measured approach to his craft have served him well as he has made the transition to the United States and the NBA.

The San Antonio Spurs won the NBA Draft Lottery last summer, claiming the right to draft first overall.

To be in the lottery owning its first-round pick, of course, a team simply isn’t very good, and even Wembanyama couldn’t save the Spurs from another tough season (they had won only 14 of their first 60 games this season).

Wembanyama, obviously the No. 1 overall draft pick, has not disappointed his San Antonio team or its fans in his rookie season.

He scores almost 21 points per game, grabs more than 10 rebounds per game and leads the NBA in blocked shots (3.5 per game).

And he’s only 20 years old.

Wembanyama battled Oklahoma City’s Chet Holmgren, who is 7ft1, early in the season for the lead in the race to win NBA Rookie of the Year but he’s distanced himself from Holmgren over the past couple of months.

Since Jan. 1, he is scoring 22.6 points per game, shooting 36% from 3-point range (compared with only 29% before Jan. 1) and blocking 3.8 shots per game.

For context, only the very best shooters in the NBA regardless of height — can hit 40% from 3-point range.

Tallest Players in NBA History

The tallest players in NBA history are also among the more famous.

Most were more conversation pieces than vital cogs in a team’s engine, but certainly were visible, popular and – a very important point here – were valuable marketing targets for the league.

Though not quite tall enough to make our list, 7ft1 Wilt Chamberlain and 7ft2 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar lifted the league dramatically due to their combination of talent and physical stature.

The NBA, forever seeking to attract the casual sports fan as well as the uninitiated, pushed the PR envelope with its tallest players through its history.

Who is the Tallest NBA Player Ever?

Manute Bol and Gheorghe Muresan, both 7ft7 and both drafted by the Washington Bullets, played in the NBA – Bol during the 1980s and 1990s and Muresan from 1993-2000.

Bol, from South Sudan, played in the NBA from 1985-1995. He was drafted by the Washington Bullets (now the Wizards) and made the league’s All-Defense team in the 1985-86 season. He also led the NBA in blocked shots twice.

Bol died in 2010 at the age of 47.

Muresan, from Romania, was a second-round pick of the Bullets in 1993 and was voted the league’s Most Improved Player after the 1995-96 season.

He gained fame off the court via commercials and in the movies, appearing with Billy Crystal in the film My Giant.

Both take the crown for the title of the tallest NBA player ever.
