Colorado Online Poker Bonuses

Bonuses are a key aspect of nearly every site offering online poker for real money in Colorado. They come in various forms which we’ve outlined below.

Welcome Bonus

This is any bonus given to a new player. It’s most commonly awarded as a match deposit bonus when a new player makes their first deposit, but can also be a no deposit bonus, given to a player signing up.

Welcome bonuses are usually the largest around, and are mostly given as bonus money. Although some CO poker sites will also give free spins to use in their casino as part of a welcome bonus.

Match Deposit Bonus

This is a bonus that adds a certain percentage to a deposit. So, for example, if you deposit $50 and get a 200% deposit bonus, you’ll receive an additional $100 in bonus funds.

It is important to keep in mind that some match deposit promos require substantial playthrough requirements to release the funds.

These bonus types can be worth thousands, and are found at all our recommended Colorado poker sites.

No Deposit Bonus

This is a bonus given without needing to deposit. Therefore, these bonuses are risk free. They’re often given to players signing up, but are also sometimes given when new games are released, to encourage people to play them.

No deposit bonuses are usually small and can also have high wagering requirements – but they’re free, so there’s no complaining.

All poker rooms charge a small percentage fee in the form of ‘rake’. And rakeback in poker is when you get a portion of your rake back from the poker room you’re playing at.

Rakeback offers comes in different formats such as fixed, contributed, dealt, and hybrid, and varies depending on your chosen poker site.

Reload Bonus

Once you’ve spent your first deposit, you’ll need to deposit again. Any bonus applied to deposits after the first are called reload bonuses.

They’re usually match deposit bonuses, but smaller than welcome bonuses. They’re offered to encourage players to continue playing.

Tournament Tickets

As the name suggests, these are free tournament tickets, and they’re awarded in several situations.

Most commonly, they’re given to new players and permit entry to freerolls – free tournaments with real cash prizes. Tournament tickets can also regularly be earned through loyalty and VIP schemes.

VIP Rewards

VIPs are the biggest spending poker players, and these whales often have their own rewards programs.

They reward players for their time at the site, offering exclusive bonuses, enhanced customer support, rakeback, and more.

There are also similar schemes for standard players, called loyalty programs.

Types of Online Poker in Colorado

Online poker comes in many forms, ensuring there’s something for everyone playing online poker in Colorado.

Texas Hold'em Poker

Texas Hold’em is the most popular poker variation online, by a considerable distance. No Limit Hold’em allows unlimited bet sizes, while Limit and Pot Limit Hold’em restrict bet sizes.

Four betting rounds can lead to gigantic pots, especially when playing the no limit version of the game.

You’ll need to make the best possible five-card poker hand from your two hole cards and the five community cards. Have the best hand at the end, and you’ll win the pot.

Alternatively, be the last player standing after all others have folded, and you’ll also win, regardless of your hand strength.

Omaha is similar to Texas Hold’em, but you’ll need to make your five-card hand from two of your four hole cards and three of the five community cards.

There are four betting rounds, allowing for the possibility of large pots being created. It is an exciting game which is why there is a growing number of Omaha poker sites in the US.

There’s also a version of Omaha called Hi-Lo, where you’ll try to make the best and worst poker hands, with both being paid when the hand comes to an end. This is more complex and suitable for more experienced players.

Only Omaha 8 has players getting half the pot for qualifying high and low hands.

Pot-Limit Omaha (PLO) is likely the only game you’ll find on most sites as PLO and standard Omaha are vastly different.

Draw poker is characterized by players being able to swap their cards for new ones, allowing them to improve their hand.

Quite simply, you’ll receive five cards, before a betting round. You’ll then be allowed to swap cards, before another betting round. The player with the best hand then wins.

Five-Card Draw is the most common form of the game, and is also regarded as the easiest type of poker to learn – making it perfect for new poker players.

Razz and 2-7 Triple Draw are the most popular forms of draw poker as they are found more often at the best online poker sites in Colorado.

Other Poker Games

Other poker games are available, although rarely found online. These include Razz, Seven-Card Stud, and Pineapple Poker.

Another poker variation found at some sites is Open-Face Chinese – a more complex game featuring up to 13 cards per hand.

Supported Payment Methods at Colorado Poker Sites

Before you can play online poker in Colorado, you’ll need to deposit funds. We’ve outlined the most popular depositing options below.

Online Bank Transfer

This lets you initiate a transfer of money from your bank account to the bank account of the poker site (in the same way you’d send money to a family member or friend).

It’s highly secure and there aren’t usually fees, but it’s really slow – it can take days for the funds to arrive at the poker site.

Colorado’s online poker’s legal status means some banks won’t allow transactions with poker sites.

Debit and Credit Cards

Debit and credit card deposits are available at most poker sites.

Just tap in your card details and make the payment – the money is then transferred instantly. There are no fees too, and card companies have reliable security.

But similar to online bank transfers as the legal situation of online poker in Colorado is not yet regulated, banking establishments companies block transactions associated with poker sites.

eWallets include PayPal, Skrill, and Neteller, and they act as middlemen between a poker site and your bank account. Currently, our recommended poker sites for Colorado do not feature any eWallets.

Simply add money to your eWallet, then spend it online. Or, in PayPal’s case, link your bank account to PayPal and use PayPal at casinos and poker sites to make purchases.

It’s fast and simple, but the fees attached can be very high.

There are loads of cryptocurrencies, but the most used are Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Tether.

They’re decentralized and aren’t controlled by banks or governments. Crypto transactions are fast and have minimal fees.

But most crypto is volatile, so its value can change drastically. Also, it’s unregulated, adding some risk to owning and spending crypto coins.

Cryptocurrencies are widely used in the best anonymous poker sites like CoinPoker, due to its lack of personal details and verification needed.

Prepaid Cards

Prepaid cards can be bought for cash in stores. They are then redeemed online by inputting a code.

They’re exceptionally secure, as you never have to input banking details online. But they’re inconvenient, as purchasing one involves heading to the closest participating store.

Colorado Poker Legislation Timeline

There has been very little legislation pertaining to poker in Colorado recently.

The only significant development was Amendment 77, which removed any limits on the types of games permitted at Colorado casinos in Black Hawk, Cripple Creek, and Central City, plus removed limits on wager sizes.

Tribal casinos were exempt from the previous rules.

Is Poker Legal in Colorado?

It is legal to play poker at casinos in Black Hawk, Cripple Creek, and Central City, as well as tribal casinos. But online poker is not regulated in Colorado yet.

Despite this, there are many offshore poker sites available in Colorado. These are legally based abroad and, therefore, are outside the jurisdiction of state and federal law.

When Will Online Poker Be Legal in Colorado?

A legal framework for online poker was drafted in 2012. But that was the last movement in legalizing poker in the state.

There is little appetite to legalize poker in Colorado, so don’t expect legal online poker in Colorado anytime soon. So, anyone looking for online poker in Colorado will instead need to play at an offshore site.

Colorado Poker Laws

Colorado Revised Statutes, Title 18, Criminal Code, Article 10, Gambling outlines the state’s stance on gambling, banning it in most forms.

But in 1991, legislation was passed allowing casinos in Black Hawk, Cripple Creek, and Central City. These casinos are permitted to offer poker to visitors. Tribal casinos, of which there are two, are also permitted to offer poker.

Online poker rules are much simpler – there is no online poker permitted in Colorado.

But while offshore casinos are unregulated and operate outside the state’s legal framework, they’re highly popular with CO poker players.

Are Winnings Taxed in CO?

Any gambling winnings in Colorado are taxed as income, and as such are taxed at 4.40%, the rate of Colorado income tax. You’ll also need to pay federal income tax at a rate of 24% on winnings.

Casinos and poker rooms in Colorado will automatically withhold income tax on winnings, but only when you win more than a certain threshold. When this happens, you’ll be issued a W-2 G form.

The legal situation surrounding online poker in Colorado makes it tough to declare income from poker without also admitting to playing online. Offshore poker sites will not withhold any winnings.

How Colorado Online Poker Compares to Other Legal States

There are only eight states with regulated online poker: Connecticut, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Rhode Island, Nevada, New Jersey, and West Virginia. None of Colorado’s neighboring states offer legal online poker within their borders.

In states where poker is legal, there are regulated poker sites, with licenses from state governments to operate.

But while Colorado poker online sites are not regulated, they are still perfectly safe, with the ones on this page having fantastic reputations for safety and fair play.

Colorado Online Poker vs Live Poker

Online poker differs tremendously from land-based poker. While both follow the same rules, the tactics used are very different.

Online poker players rely more on math and probability, because it’s exceptionally hard to read opponents.

Live poker players, on the other hand, attempt more bluffs, as it’s easier to read other players when their faces are visible.

Online poker also has a much larger player pool, plus there are many more online poker tournaments. But the biggest prizes are usually found at live poker games, such as the eight-figure prizes sometimes offered at the WSOP Main Event.

Buy-in to the prestigious WSOP Main Event is a whopping 5-figures. However there are ways to participate without paying $10,000 if you’re on a tight budget.

There’s also a much larger variation of poker games online. Live poker players will mostly find Texas Hold’em at casinos, and sometimes Pot-Limit Omaha.

But there are many types online, including more unusual variations, like Open-Face Chinese. It is relatively easy to learn how to play Chinese poker if you’re new to the game.

There’s also a bigger variety of buy-ins – it’s possible to play tournaments online for a few cents to thousands of dollars.

Colorado Poker Apps

Many prefer to play poker on the go, creating a huge demand for poker apps.

They can be downloaded for free for iOS and Android devices and offer a mobile optimized way to play many games, at a range of stakes.

Not all online poker sites offer apps, but there are several apps offering online poker with real money in Colorado.

The best of these is the CoinPoker app, which is available for iOS and Android smartphones and tablets. It’s intuitive to use, regularly updated, and offers the same games and bonuses as the desktop version.

You can read our CoinPoker review to find out more about the brand’s mobile app.

Famous Colorado Poker Players

Colorado might not spring to mind when thinking of famous poker stars, but there have been several successful players either born or residing in Colorado.

The poker stars quoted below are live tournament winnings only, and don’t include money won in cash games and online.

  • Steve O’Dwyer: The undoubted leader in Colorado poker, O’Dwyer has won over $41 million from poker tournaments alone, including eight prizes of over $1 million. He’s 14th on the world all-time money winners list.
  • Chance Kornuth: Next on the list of most successful Colorado players is Chance Kornuth. He’s won nearly $16 million, with his biggest win being the $1.2 million won at the Super High Roller event at the 54th World Series of Poker.
  • Pratyush Buddiga: Finally, we come to Pratyush Buddiga, who has live earnings of around $6.5 million. His biggest win was C$ 243,714, won at the C$ 2,300 + 200 No Limit Hold’em tournament at the 2014 Fallsview Poker Classic.

Responsible Gambling in Colorado

Responsible gambling is exceptionally important. Poker players – and any other gamblers – should only ever gamble with money they can afford to lose.

Always gamble for fun and not as a way to make money, plus they establish strict limits – when they’re reached, it’s time to stop playing.

Signs your gambling might be getting out of control include chasing losses, gambling ever-increasing amounts of money, and getting depressed about money you’re losing.

If you suspect you have a gambling problem, Colorado poker sites offer several tools, including betting limits and self-exclusion.

Tips Playing Online Poker for Real Money in Colorado

There are several tips to remember when playing online poker with real money in Colorado. Five of the best are listed below.

1. Use Bankroll Management

Bankroll management is key, not only when playing online poker in Colorado, but when engaging in any gambling activity.

Divide your bankroll into smaller amounts, then only risk one amount per gambling session.

If you lose the money, get up and walk away, leaving money left over for another day.

2. Start at Low Stakes

New players shouldn’t jump straight into high-stakes games.

The higher the stakes, the better the players, so it’s better to learn the ropes in low-stakes games, even if you’ve got a bankroll of thousands.

When you find yourself consistently winning, move up a level. If you start losing regularly, don’t be afraid or embarrassed to drop back down a level.

3. Claim the Best Bonuses

Anyone playing online poker for real money in Colorado should always be aware of available bonuses – and should claim the best of them.

Bonuses can add thousands of dollars to your bankroll, and even though they have wagering requirements attached, give you a chance to win some impressive sums of money.

All our recommended Colorado poker online sites have bonuses on offer.

4. Don't Bluff Too Much

Inexperienced players regularly think poker is all about bluffing.

But the best players bluff rarely, and even less when they play online. This is because it’s tough to read other players online, so knowing when to bluff is exceptionally hard – even professionals struggle.

Instead of bluffing, learn to play a mathematically sound strategy, where probability is used.

5. Be Disciplined

Discipline is vital in poker. Your patience and attitude will often be tested, and it’s important to stay focused and committed to a sensible strategy.

If you find yourself making increasingly risky and foolhardy bets, step away, take a break, and come back when you’re back in the right frame of mind.

Online Poker in Colorado – Our Verdict

There are plenty of top online poker sites in Colorado, but you’ll find CoinPoker at the top of our list.
