Top 8 New York Online Sports Betting Sites – Full Guide to NY Sports Betting

New York online sports betting was legalized in April 2021 when Governor Andrew Cuomo approved the state’s 2022 legislative budget. The online market launched in January 2022, and New York immediately became the most significant sports betting market in America, eclipsing Nevada and New York.

New York has always supported sports betting strongly, passing legislation legalizing retail sports betting in 2013, well before the US Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) in 2018. PASPA prevented US states from creating new sports betting legislation, which meant the in-person betting regulations couldn’t come into place until the PASPA decision. The first retail sportsbooks opened in land-based casinos in July 2019.

New York Online Sports Betting Regulation

If you are 21 or older, you can place a sports bet in New York if you are physically within state limits. Online sportsbooks use sophisticated geolocation software to ensure that you are located within the Empire State before placing a bet.

Some professions are excluded from placing sports bets. Anyone associated with a professional or collegiate sports team is prohibited from New York betting activities, as is anyone involved with the New York State Gaming Commission. Certain criminal records prohibited felons from placing wagers and anyone with non-public information about sports teams is automatically excluded from placing sports bets in New York.

Sports Betting Licensing in New York

The New York State Gaming Commission governs New York online sports betting. As well as overseeing New York betting, the Gaming Commission regulates DFS, wagering on horse racing, and the lottery. The Gaming Commission was founded in 2013 following the merger of the New York State Division of the Lottery and the New York State Racing and Wagering Board. The Commission is made up of five commissioners that the Governor appoints.

New York Online Sports Betting Bonuses

Online sports betting bonuses are a popular way for NY bettors to try new sportsbook sites and potentially increase their winnings. These bonuses come in various forms, including welcome bonuses for new players, deposit bonuses, free bets, odds boots, and other generous offers. However, it’s important to understand the terms and conditions of these bonuses, including wagering requirements and expiration dates, to avoid any surprises and ensure that you can make the most of the bonus.

NY betting operators constantly introduce new bonuses. So visit the Promotions section on the NY sports betting site you’re interested in to find the latest offers. But our experts listed below the types of popular promos you’ll find on New York’s leading gambling sites.

Welcome Bonuses

As the name suggests, an online welcome bonus is meant to greet newly-registered players. So you can only claim this bonus once when you register a new account with the NY sports betting site. It can include free bets, deposit-match, or no-deposit bonuses.

Deposit Match Bonuses

An online gambling deposit-match bonus is a type of bonus where the NY sportsbook matches a percentage of your deposit up to a certain amount. For example, a 100% deposit-match bonus up to $500 means the betting site will match 100% of your deposit up to a maximum of $500. So if you deposit $300, the sportsbook will credit your account with an additional $300 in bonus funds, giving you a total of $600 to bet with.

No Deposit Bonuses

A no-deposit bonus is a type of bonus that you can claim without making a deposit. In most cases, the New York sports betting site offering this type of bonus as a welcome offer will credit your account with bonus money for simply signing up. You can keep your winnings, but in most cases, you’ll need to make your first deposit before cashing out.

Bonus Codes

New York sportsbooks use online bonus codes to reward an exclusive group of players. A bonus code is a specific code that a player enters during registration or when making a deposit to claim a bonus offer. Bonus codes are a combination of characters and letters that usually hint at what you can claim. For example, “FREE$25” can be a bonus code offering $25 in free bets. However, this is just an example that won’t work on an actual NY sports betting site.

Free Bets

Online sportsbooks offer free bets allowing you to place a bet on a specific sporting event. If you are lucky and your free bet comes through, you can cash out your winnings (subject to terms and conditions) but not your stake.

Odds Boosts

An Odds boost is a promotional offer where an online sportsbook increases the payout for a specific bet. It is a way to provide better odds and potentially increase the player’s winnings. The boosted odds are usually available for a limited time and may have restrictions or limitations.

Parlay Insurance

Parlay insurance is a promotion that refunds your bet if you miss one or more selections (legs) in a parlay bet. NY sports betting operators use parlay insurance to provide a safety net for players and encourage them to place parlay bets with multiple selections, potentially winning more returns than on the sum of individual bets.

Teams to Bet on in New York

Pro Sports

Buffalo Bills

The Bills have competed in the NFL in the AFC East since 1970. Known for its raucous fanbase and the atmospheric Bills Stadium, few supporters have experienced the highs and lows that Bills fans have been through. The Bills share the dubious honor of the most Super Bowl appearances without a win with the Minnesota Vikings. The four Super Bowl losses came in consecutive years from 1990 to 1993. Lean times have followed, with the Bills being the last major North American sports franchise to make the playoffs in the 21st century.

New York Giants

The Giants play home games at MetLife Stadium, just outside of the New York State border. The Giants have won eight NFL championships, including four in the Super Bowl era. Eli Manning led the Giants to two Super Bowl titles in the 2000s, defeating the Tom Brady-led New England Patriots on both occasions.

New York Jets

The Jets share MetLife Stadium with crosstown rivals, the New York Giants. Joe Namath led the Jets to its only Super Bowl title, winning Super Bowl III by defeating Johnny Unitas and the Baltimore Colts. The Jets have retired five jerseys, with Namath, Don Maynard, Curtis Martin, Joe Klecko, and Dennis Byrd having this honor.

Brooklyn Net

The Nets came back to New York in 2012, having spent the preceding 35 years as the New Jersey Nets. The team plays home games at the Barclays Center, with this being the first major league sports team to play in Brooklyn in years. Nets fans thought that 2021 would be the year that an NBA Championship was coming to the franchise with the ‘Big 3’ of James Harden, Kyrie Irving, and Kevin Durant leading the team. However, the Milwaukee Bucks eliminated the Nets from the playoffs, and the Big 3 disbanded soon after.

New York Knicks

The Knicks have the privilege of playing home games at Madison Square Garden, arguably the most famous basketball stadium in the world. The Knicks have won two NBA Championships, in 1970 and 1973. The 2000s have been bleak for the Knicks, with only one division title in 2013 to display in the franchise’s trophy cabinet.

New York Met

The Mets compete in the NL East Division and are a two-time World Series winner, in 1969 and 1986. The ‘Miracle Mets’ of 1969 are one of the most famed underdogs in the history of baseball, beating the heavily backed Baltimore Orioles. The Mets play at the 42,000-capacity Citi Field.

New York Yankees

The Yankees are one of the most successful US sports teams and one of the most instantly recognizable brands in the world. The Yankees have won an MLB record 27 World Series championships, but to Yankees fans’ dismay, only two of those World Series have come in the 21st Century. Yankees players with retired numbers read like a who’s who of baseball, including Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, and many more.

Buffalo Sabres

The Sabres started life in the NHL as an expansion franchise in 1970. The Sabres have reached the Stanley Cup finals twice, falling to the Philadelphia Flyers in 1975 and the Dallas Stars in 1999. This leaves the Sabres with the unenviable record of being the joint oldest team in the NHL never to win a Stanley Cup.

NY Sports Betting NHL Markets

New York Islanders

The Islanders were founded in 1972 and compete in the Eastern Conference Metropolitan Division. The team plays home games in the 17,250-capacity UBS Arena in Elmont, New York. The Isles are famed for the dynasty of the early 1980s where the franchise won the Stanley Cup for four years in a row from 1980 to 1983. During this period, the Islanders won 19 playoff games in a row, a feat that has never again been matched in US major league sport.

New York Rangers

The Rangers have won the Stanley Cup four times, the same number as crosstown rivals the Islanders. However, the four wins came in 11 appearances, compared to the Isles 5. The Rangers were one of the founding members of the NHL in 1926 and play home games at Madison Square Garden.

College Sports

University of Albany, SUNY Great Danes

The Albany Great Danes represent the University at Albany, SUNY. 18 varsity teams compete in the America East Conference. The school’s mascot is a Great Dane named Damien, and the team sports purple and gold colors. The men’s basketball team has made the NCAA Tournament five times in the 2000s, almost defeating #1 seed UConn in 2006.

United States Military Academy Army Black Knights

The Black Knights compete in the Patriot League on behalf of the United States Military Academy, more commonly referred to as the Army, across 25 sports. The Black Knights football team was National Champion three years in a row from 1944-1946. The Army-Navy game is one of the best rivalry games in all of college sports, with the annually televised game signifying the end of the college football season.

State University of New York at Binghamton Bobcats

The State University of New York at Binghamton is represented by the Bearcats in the America East Conference. The Bearcats men’s basketball team reached the NCAA tournament for the only time in 2009. The program has struggled significantly since this date due to ethical violations unearthed in 2010, making player recruitment difficult for the school.

University at Buffalo Bulls

The University at Buffalo has 16 varsity teams competing under the Buffalo Bulls banner. Cheered on by Victor E. Bull, the Bulls mascot, the football team competes at FCS level and plays home games at the 25,000-capacity UB stadium.

Canisius College Golden Griffins

Canisius College is located in Buffalo, New York, and the Golden Griffins have eight men’s and eight women’s teams competing. Teams have achieved moderate success, with the Golden Griffins hockey, lacrosse, and basketball teams all reaching the NCAA Tournament.

Types of Bets in New York

While the only casinos available in New York are social casinos, there are a wide variety of bets available at sports betting sites, and you can use these bet types on many of the sports on offer. Below, we’ve listed some of those bet types to give you an idea of what is available when you click the links on this page and sign up.

  • Moneyline: One of the simplest types of wagering is moneyline betting, where you predict the winner of an event.
  • Point Spread: Instead of just predicting the winner of an event, a point spread will apply an imaginary point deficit to the favorite and point advantage to the underdog. The favorite has to overcome this deficit, and the underdog lose within its advantage or win for your wager to be successful.
  • Totals: New York online sports betting sites will set totals for various statistics, and you have to predict whether the final amount will be over or under that amount.
  • Player Props: A player prop allows you to bet on the statistics of a singular athlete in an event, such as a player hitting a certain amount of passing yards.
  • Team Props: Rather than betting on an individual player, a team prop allows you to back the statistical performance of any entire team.
  • Futures: With a future bet, you can predict major events in the far future, like teams winning the NBA Finals.
  • Parlays: When you add multiple bets to your bet slip at once, many New York online sports betting sites will let you combine those wagers into one parlay. If one leg of your parlay betting slip fails, you’ll lose your whole bet.

New York Lottery Locations

The New York Lottery was founded in 1967 and falls under the remit of the New York State Gaming Commission. While the Commission oversees both the lottery and sports betting, there are no plans to offer sports betting kiosks or similar partnerships in the 15,000-plus lottery retail locations in the Empire State.

How Does New York Compare to Other States

Market Coverage

New York sportsbooks offer coverage of a wide range of sports to bet on. The market coverage is in line with many other states in the US. The only restriction on legal sports betting in New York is on in-state college teams. Collegiate betting is allowed on teams from other states, but you can’t bet on in-state college teams such as Syracuse in the Empire State.

Competitive Odds & Prices

Sportsbooks that are licensed in New York are also present in other states. Odds offered in New York are the same as odds offered in other states. This means that gambling fans in New York will see the same odds as Nevada or Ohio bettors. There is so much competition for sportsbook customers in New York that sportsbooks cannot afford to give uncompetitive odds and prices to customers.

Gambling Revenue

New York sportsbooks have to pay some of the highest tax rates in the country. Retail sportsbooks pay a reasonable 10% tax rate, but online sportsbooks pay an extremely high 51%. New York is now the biggest sports betting market in the US, having overtaken Nevada and New Jersey. Over $700 million of taxes were collected in 2022, showing how lucrative sports betting can be for generating tax revenue.

Betting Taxes

New York sports bettors have to pay taxes on gambling winnings. This is the same across all US states. Sports betting winnings have been declared to the IRS, and winnings greater than $600 require a W-2G form to be completed. NY sports betting losses are deductible from winnings, so ensure you keep good records of all sports bets placed.

New York DFS

Daily Fantasy Sports have been legal in New York since August 2016 after receiving approval from Gov. Cuomo. Now, you can sign up with New York DFS sites and create teams of your favorite athletes, scoring points based on their performances. You can win cash prizes if you have one of the top-performing teams on game day.

Some of the top New York online sports betting operators provide DFS platforms which you can access through your sports betting accounts, such as FanDuel and DraftKings.

Best Online Sports Betting Site in New York

While there are plenty of top New York online sports betting sites, our experts believe Caesars is one of the best online sportsbooks in NY. Caesars Sportsbook allows anyone that signs up to join the Caesars Rewards program, where you can earn bonuses and real-life prizes by betting. Caesars is also an official betting partner of the New York Mets and New York Rangers, and provides exclusive odds and promotions for both teams.
