Best Online Sports Betting Sites in Oregon Reviewed

Our review team has decades of industry experience reviewing and testing sportsbooks. Since DraftKings is the only online sportsbook available statewide in Oregon, they’ve looked in depth at its range of markets, payment options, customer support, and welcome bonus.

DraftKings is a well-respected operator in the industry, launching in 2012 as a Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) platform. It then expanded to betting after the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) was overturned. It launched in Oregon in January 2022, through a partnership with the state lottery, making it the 18th state where DraftKings is available.

Our Verdict: 9.1/10

As the only legal sportsbook available statewide, it’s lucky DraftKings OR provides everything a bettor needs. Our experts love its easy-to-use desktop client, mobile site, and native apps for iOS and Android. With a great range of markets, promotions on major league action, and a generous welcome bonus, DraftKings seems to have it all.

Nonetheless, some improvements could be made in the future. Our experts would like the ability to talk to a DraftKings representative without going through a bot in the help center. They were also keen to see a lower wagering requirement for the welcome bonus.

Withdrawals are processed within one to five business days depending on the payment method.

You can contact the team through live chat, but, first, you may have to talk to a bot and request a callback later in the day. You can also contact DraftKings through its Twitter help desk or visit its help center’s FAQ section.

DraftKings offers OR bettors various generous bonuses to boost your bankroll. These include an excellent welcome offer of a 20% deposit match (up to $1,000). Oregon Sports Betting Laws

Currently, betting on professional sports online and at retail sportsbooks is legal in Oregon. DraftKings offers online sports betting in partnership with Oregon Lottery, while four other retail sportsbooks accept bets on tribal grounds in-person. One of these retail sportsbooks, BetMGM Sportsbook at The Mill Casino, allows you to use the BetMGM mobile app while on tribal grounds.

Oregon was one of the four states exempted from the PASPA, effectively banning sports betting in the United States. Oregon’s exemption allowed the state to maintain a sports betting product – Sports Action – via its lottery operator, which has been in place since 1989.

After Sports Action’s discontinuation in 2007, betting was unavailable in Oregon until the state lottery launched the Scoreboard app in August 2019. Oregon Lottery and DraftKings signed a partnership at the end of 2021 for DraftKings to take over the lottery’s sports betting product, making way for it to become Oregon’s only sportsbook statewide.

Legal Gambling Age for Sports Betting in Oregon

The Oregon legal gambling age is 21 for sports betting, casino gambling, lottery, and other gambling activities. Sportsbooks will usually ask you to confirm your age by providing a copy of your photo ID during the verification process.

There are also some restrictions placed on particular individuals to stop them from betting in Oregon. These include officials involved in professional sports, such as referees, league and team employees, players, and coaching staff. Additionally, you cannot bet in Oregon if you are criminally barred from betting, or you’re a member of a self-exclusion program.

History of Sports Betting Bills in Oregon

Oregon has a longer history with sports betting than most states, beginning when voters passed a constitutional amendment to establish a state lottery. The Oregon Lottery began to offer Sports Action in 1989, exempting the state from PASPA and allowing it to continue to accept wagers.

When PASPA was overturned, lawmakers believed new legislation was unnecessary to legalize Oregon online sports betting, as it was already legal through the Oregon Lottery. In this way, the lottery essentially had a statewide monopoly on sports betting. Tribal casinos were also allowed to offer retail sports betting on location.

  • House Bill 3514 – Representative David Gomberg introduces a bill prohibiting greyhound racing and wagering, which passes in March 2023.

  • Senate Bill 1503 – Sponsored by Senate President Peter Courtney, this bill would allow the Oregon Lottery to authorize college sports betting. The bill fails to win the support of lawmakers.

  • House Bill 2127 – Proposes authorizing the Oregon Racing Commission to license and oversee sportsbooks, ending the Lottery’s monopoly on Oregon online sports betting. The bill does not pass, despite support from Oregon Governor Kate Brown.

Paying Tax on Sports Bet Winnings in Oregon

For sports bets that win $600 or more, or 300 times the amount you originally bet, your gaming operator must report your winnings to the IRS. You will receive a W-2G form in this case. If you win over $600 on a sports bet in Oregon, the operator will withhold 24% for federal taxes.

The Oregon Lottery withholds 8% of all winnings over $1,500. Federal taxes also apply to these winnings, with an additional 24% tax applied to all gambling income exceeding $5,000. However, you can deduct losses to lower your tax burden.

The law dictates that net proceeds from Oregon online sports betting should go towards supporting the state’s educational programs, including public schools, community colleges, and universities. In addition, some of the revenue goes towards funding gambling addiction treatment and prevention programs.

Types of Bets at Oregon Sportsbooks

DraftKings OR offers bettors various bet types, including the most popular with US players, like moneylines, point spreads, and totals. Our guide below lists some of the bet types available at Oregon online sports betting sites:

  • Moneyline: The moneyline is the easiest market to understand at DraftKings Oregon. To win a bet, you need to predict the winner of a sports contest correctly.
  • Point spread: For spread betting, your sportsbook will apply a handicap to one of the teams. For your bet to be successful, you must correctly predict the winner after the handicap has been applied to the final score.
  • Totals: A totals bet is when you bet on the number of points scored, regardless of the winner. Bettors wager on whether the total score will be over or under a betting line set by the sportsbook.
  • Props: You can place proposition bets, also known as props, on a particular statistic by teams, players, or in a matchup. An example of props would be Portland Thorns scoring twice in the first half, or the Trail Blazers scoring over 100 points.
  • Parlays: A parlay combines multiple wagers into a single bet. While parlays offer higher potential payouts as the odds are multiplied, they are often considered risky – all of your selections must be correct for the bet to pay out.
  • In-play betting: In-play or live betting allows you to place wagers as the game progresses. DraftKings offers a range of in-play markets on events like the MLB, NFL, NHL, and the English Premier League.
  • Futures: Futures are bets that take place on significant events in the future, like the MLS Cup winner or NBA MVP. The DraftKings sportsbook offers futures on a range of sports, including the MLS’s Timbers and NBA’s Trail Blazers.

Illegal Bets in Oregon

DraftKings, the only legal statewide sports betting site in Oregon, does not accept wagers on college sports due to restrictions imposed by the Oregon Lottery.

However, this restriction does not extend to retail sports betting on tribal land. So if you want to wager on the Oregon Ducks or Oregon State Beavers, head to a tribal-run retail sportsbook.
