InMotion Hosting Review for 2024

Why Trust Techopedia
Our Verdict

InMotion Hosting offers unlimited bandwidth at an affordable price

We found InMotion Hosting to be one of the best hosting providers for businesses and organizations with multiple sites and high volumes of traffic.

It also offers lots of free perks, which we didn’t see with other providers, including unlimited bandwidth and a marketing suite. With such high-quality features, we were surprised that InMotion is one of the most affordable providers, with prices starting at less than $3 per month.

Between its generous plans and impressive value, InMotion is definitely worth consideration for your business site hosting needs.

Pros

  • 99% uptime
  • Free SSL certificate
  • Unlimited bandwidth
  • Super-fast speeds
  • 90-day money-back guarantee

Cons

  • No Windows servers
  • Costs more for shorter-term plans and auto backups
  • Not ideal for beginners

Founded in 2001, InMotion Hosting has provided top-quality web hosting since the early days of the Internet as we know it. With around 350 expert staff available to help over 170,000 customers, its service is geared firmly towards putting users first.

As one of the best website hosting providers, it serves both small business and enterprise users with several types of hosting. But before committing to a paid plan, our InMotion Hosting review will tell you everything you need to know.

InMotion Hosting Plans & Pricing

Our InMotion review had to start with a deep dive into the cost and value for money. While InMotion is a company known for its cheap website hosting, it has four key plans with differing starting prices – Core, Launch, Power, and Pro.

Prices start at a very low $2.29 per month for a three-year term. We were particularly impressed with the 90-day money-back guarantee included in each plan.

That said, this guarantee feels necessary when InMotion has set out such long contract subscriptions – most of their plans have a 36-month minimum term, which is a fair bit more than the industry standard.

Shared hosting is generally the most popular option, so we’ll go into detail about InMotion’s shared hosting plans in our next section.

Plans Price (lowest) Number of websites Free domain Free SSL Storage Bandwidth Free email accounts
Shared Core Hosting $2.29/month for 3 years 2 100GB Unlimited 10
VPS 4GB RAM $14.99/month for 6 months Unlimited 90GB SSD 2TB Unlimited
Dedicated Aspire Hosting $69.99/month for 3 years Unlimited 1TB SSD 1 Gbps Unmetered Unlimited
WordPress Hosting $2.99/month for 12 months 2 100GB Unlimited 10

Shared Core – from $2.29/month with 36-month plan

The base plan from InMotion is the Core plan, which includes:

  • Two websites
  • 100GB of SSD storage
  • One free domain
  • Up to ten free email addresses

Like all InMotions plans, you’ll get access to a cPanel dashboard to manage your account. From here, you can access one-click frameworks and web apps to improve your site.

Core bandwidth is unlimited, and the ‘Security Suite’ includes free SSL and DDoS protection with hack and malware safeguards. We loved the inclusive access to InMotion marketing tools, like a website builder, free advertising credits, and customer management tools.

We were generally very impressed with the volume of features available at such a low monthly price.

Shared Launch – from $4.99/month with 36-month plan

The Launch plan takes everything you already get in Core plans, but elevates it to a higher level.

Instead of just two websites, you get up to 25, giving your company or ideas more room to grow. Also, you can have unlimited email addresses with unlimited NVMe SSD storage for your files.

InMotion promises faster speeds, too, with UltraStack speed and performance that’s six times better than the Core plan. Of course, you still get the free domain and free SSL that comes with the Core plan too.

Shared Power – from $4.58/month with 36-month plan

Taking everything into account from Core and Launch, the Power plan then gives you even more freedom for web hosting for a very hard-to-beat price.

In addition to your free domain and unlimited storage, you also get unlimited websites, so you can grow as large as you want without any restrictions. Bandwidth is unlimited, without any impact on speed.

In fact, Power carries UltraStack speed and performance that’s 12 times greater than Core and Launch plans, for a noticeably faster connection. You get unlimited email addresses for your team, with ongoing access to InMotion’s Security Suite for easy site management.

Shared Pro – from $11.91/month for 36-month plan

The Pro plan comes without restriction, offering everything a large organization with a lot of sites could possibly need.

With InMotion Pro plans, you get unlimited:

  • Websites
  • NVMe SSD storage for your sites
  • Bandwidth
  • Email addresses

As standard, you’ll get your free domain with free SSL, but the Pro plan also includes a dedicated IP, so you never have to share your IP with another user. It also delivers the fastest speeds, with UltraStack speed and performance at 20 times greater than normal.

What Hosting Types Does InMotion Offer?

InMotion - Reliable Uptime with Free Site Migrations
InMotion’s cPanel

Like any of the top hosting providers on the market, InMotion offers several types of web hosting, including Shared hosting, VPS (Virtual Private Server) hosting, Dedicated hosting, and WordPress hosting (via cPanel).

For you to make an informed decision, it’s important to understand what each hosting type means, and whether it might be a good fit for your website needs.

InMotion Shared Hosting

Shared hosting is typically best for users who need a single website or run a small business that doesn’t require dedicated resources.

If you choose shared hosting, InMotion gives you access to cPanel for easy account management, along with free email. Your domain comes free with your InMotion hosting plan, saving you an extra expense too.

We were impressed with the security offering, including free SSL plus hack and malware protection with DDoS prevention. Shared hosting plans also give you 24/7 access to InMotion customer service, available 365 days a year.

Plans start at $2.29 per month for the Core plan with shared hosting, which is more than reasonable if you just need one or two websites.

InMotion VPS Hosting

While our InMotion review had to check out all possible hosting types, we did find that InMotion provides some of the best VPS hosting on the market. We recommend considering VPS if you have a growing business, or you’re a developer with more demanding needs.

With VPS hosting, site management is made easy. In addition to cPanel, you’ll have a custom resource monitoring dashboard that helps you review your account to see vital information like RAM, disk space, and load usage.

To set up on VPS, you can also make use of free website transfers through Launch Assist, which provides SysAdmin-level support, data migration services, and quick server setup without any downtime.

Plans start at $14.99 per month for plans with 4GB of RAM, which we’d recommend as a minimum.

InMotion Dedicated Hosting

Dedicated hosting by InMotion works well for user with multiple sites with heavy traffic. Its automatic updates mean you can enjoy simplified server management with one-click installs and a custom firewall.

There is an option for Managed Servers, allowing InMotion to take on the heavy lifting for your web hosting. This includes Launch Assist services with SysAdmin-level support.

With dedicated hosting plans, we found security to be robust with free SSL and anti-DDoS protection. You’ll also get Backup Manager – a backup and recovery service located off the server.

Plans start at $70 per month for InMotion’s Aspire plan for dedicated hosting, with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

InMotion cPanel WordPress Hosting

InMotion is not only one of the top WordPress hosting providers, but also offers some of the fastest WordPress hosting money can buy. With over 500,000 WordPress installations ready to go, you can receive up to 40 times faster page loads with NVMe SSDs.

You still get access to cPanel, a free domain, and automatic WordPress optimization (including a user-friendly drag-and-drop site builder). We were pleased to see that this hosting type includes free NVMe SSD storage, and is protected by InMotion’s hack and malware tools.

Plans start at $3.29 per month for the WordPress hosting Core plan. The InMotion 90-day money-back guarantee is of course included for this type of hosting.

InMotion Hosting Features

Although we took many aspects of web hosting into account for our InMotion review, the range of features is an area in which we really hoped for it to stand out. One of the most unique and useful sets of tools has to be the marketing suite, but we’ve covered our favorite features of InMotion Hosting in the list below.

NVMe SSD Storage

Unlike some of the competition, InMotion offers NVMe SSD storage with some of its hosting plans. It’s much faster than other types of storage, delivering content to your site much quicker.

It can support demanding content like videos and files with the fastest response times, and with limited or zero lag. This comes as standard with the Launch, Power, and Pro shared hosting plans, but not the Core plan.

InMotion Marketing Tools

InMotion offers a unique suite of marketing tools and features to help your site look and perform its best. The BoldGrid website builder makes creating and updating your site simple.

We love how even beginners can get involved using its easy drag-and-drop format. For email marketing, you get professional email included with all shared hosting plans, although the number of addresses depends on which plan you choose. Along with customer management tools, free advertising credits are also available.

InMotion Customer Service 24/7/365

InMotion Hosting offers 24/7 customer support

One of our favorite things about InMotion Hosting is the incredible customer support. It proudly boasts US-based support with real people (not AI) to respond to customer inquiries.

You can get in touch via live chat or phone support, with an online support center and education forum available too. Even better, customer service is available 24/7, 365 days a year. It displays a deep commitment to customer support that we rarely see among web hosting providers.

How to Set Up InMotion Hosting

To be ranked among our top web hosting services, the provider should offer a quick and easy way to set up an account. We’ve outlined a step-by-step guide for how to set up an InMotion Hosting account:

  1. Select an InMotion plan

Choose the best InMotion web hosting plan for your requirements, then go ahead with the subscription. Use the information in our InMotion review to select the hosting type and pricing tier that best suits your needs.
  2. Create your website

You can use the Boldgrid Website Builder tool for easy drag-and-drop functionality while building your site.
  3. Migrate your website

Optionally, if you already have a website, you can use the dedicated InMotion Website Transfer service for easy migration.
  4. Set up your account

You can use the cPanel dashboard to install your SSL certificate, then start creating and managing email accounts for your team.
  5. Push your site to live

Once your site looks top-notch and your preferred security features are in place, you’re ready to share it with the world.

InMotion Hosting User Control Panel

For its online dashboard, we were glad to see that InMotion offers the use of cPanel. You can access this via your AMP (Account Management Panel), or you can log into cPanel directly. Either way, this is a popular tool that allows you to create and manage your account and your websites.

From the InMotion user control panel, you can also:

  • Review your database
  • Get your SSL certification
  • Create new email addresses
  • Execute one-click installs for apps and frameworks like WordPress and Laravel

We also found the cPanel helpful when you want to see your site performance, thanks to the integration of Softaculous. Overall, it’s a thorough and multi-faceted control panel that feels familiar and easy to use, making it simple to manage your site.

InMotion Hosting Website Migration

Handling site migration via InMotion is really only worth discussing if you have a WordPress hosting plan. With WordPress hosting plans, the migration service simplifies the process by handing over the reins to InMotion.

If not, migration tools are available in both plugin and manual formats, with automated SSL provisioning to save you a step in the process.

You also have the option to migrate fully manually if you prefer to handle the process yourself. In the future, we’d like to see a more robust migration service from InMotion to encourage users to move over from their current provider.

InMotion Hosting Performance

In our web hosting reviews, we often find that not all hosting providers have an uptime guarantee. However, InMotion sets itself apart with an incredible guarantee of 99.99% uptime.

Essentially, this promises almost no downtime, with triple storage redundancy that stores three independent replicas of your VPS to protect your site from disruption.

InMotion performs very well, working 20 times faster on UltraStack-powered hosting compared to regular hosting. When paired with NVMe SSD storage, it makes for a powerhouse combination of impressive and reliable performance that you can count on.

Is InMotion Hosting Secure?

With InMotion hosting plans, your security is prioritized. We felt confident to see a quality range of tools and features providing an added layer of protection. The InMotion Security Suite, included with web hosting plans, comes with:

  • Free SSL
  • Hack and malware protection
  • DDoS prevention

While automatic backups are available at an additional cost, this is a fair add-on as not all types of users and sites will require this from the offset.

InMotion Hosting Reviews from Customers

As part of our InMotion Hosting review, we also looked into third-party opinions by doing some research on trusted review sites.

InMotion earns a ‘great’ rating of 4.1 out of 5 stars in the TrustPilot InMotion hosting review. Some customer highlights from TrustPilot include:

  • Friendly, helpful customer support that feels knowledgeable and effective.
  • Positive experiences with site migration.
  • Easy to set up, with an appreciation for how quick and simple the process was.
  • Affordability from customers on a budget.

Regardless of whether reviews were positive or negative, we found direct responses to each customer from the InMotion team. We felt this proved InMotion to be a company that truly cares about its users and their unique needs.

What is InMotion Hosting Good For?

If you have any size of business, InMotion is an excellent choice for web hosting. In fact, while it received our vote for the best web hosting for small business, we’d also consider it to be among the best enterprise web hosting providers for its high-volume plans. There aren’t many hosting providers who fit the bill on both counts.

InMotion is more than capable of accommodating big business, offering plans with unlimited websites and email with unlimited upgraded storage.

But even on its cheapest plan, you get two websites with unlimited bandwidth and a full security suite with free SSL. The added bonus is its excellent value, including a 90-day money-back guarantee.

All in all, we felt this makes it ideal for businesses of any size. However, it’s not the top choice for e-commerce site hosting, and might be too complex for a personal, individual website.

InMotion Hosting vs Top Competitors

Provider InMotion Hosting Bluehost Hostgator GoDaddy
Best For All sizes of business Small businesses, personal websites, WordPress sites Those who need a lot of storage Small to medium businesses

Automatic Backups Paid With upgrade Free, daily Free, daily

InMotion vs Bluehost

We’d say that both InMotion and Bluehost would be an excellent fit for web hosting if you have a WordPress site. Both offer a free domain and free SSL with unlimited bandwidth.

However, InMotion starts at a lower price and offers 100GB of storage to start, while Bluehost limits you to 10GB. InMotion also offers servers in Europe, while Bluehost is limited to just the U.S. That said, Bluehost has an exclusive partnership with WordPress, which might just tip the scales in its direction.

InMotion vs HostGator

When it comes to comparing InMotion and HostGator, both plans come with free SSL, but the similarities end there. HostGator offers unlimited storage with even its base plans, while InMotion hosting plans start at just 10GB. If storage is what you need, then HostGator is the better option.

However, InMotion does offer a free domain, while HostGator limits it to the first year. You also get unlimited visitors, while HostGator limits your traffic. Despite this, InMotion is cheaper overall than HostGator, even with all of its added perks.

InMotion vs GoDaddy

Both InMotion and GoDaddy are web hosting providers designed to handle business sites, but with extremely different price tags. At their base rates, GoDaddy costs $10 a month, while InMotion costs less than $3 monthly.

While both offer free domains with free SSL, storage is far more limited with GoDaddy plans. Another cause for concern is that GoDaddy does not disclose bandwidth limits, while InMotion offers unlimited visitors to your sites. That said, for international business, GoDaddy offers an expanded server network with servers in Asia – it really depends on where your audience is based. Read our GoDaddy review for more details.
