News that Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer mod H2M was no more broke on the mod team’s official X account.
The mod team published a post on X stating that they would be “complying with the order and shutting down all operations immediately and permanently.” Meanwhile, the team’s X bio simply showed “SHUTDOWN.”
Today, our team members received a Cease & Desist order on behalf of Activision Publishing in relation to the H2M-Mod project. We are complying with this order and shutting down all operations immediately and permanently.

A team of dedicated developers reportedly worked on the project for over a year for free, aiming to give fans what Activision had failed to produce so far: a remastered multiplayer mode for Modern Warfare 2 (2009).
Despite releasing a remastered Modern Warfare 2 campaign in 2020, Activision never gave the multiplayer element of the game such treatment.
H2M planned to upgrade visuals for characters, weapons, and maps, alongside adding new content including new gun camo and new maps based on beloved Call of Duty locations.
Following the mod’s announcement back in July 2023, sales of Modern Warfare 2 remastered have been rising as fans eagerly awaited the multiplayer mod. Earlier this week, the game shot to the top of Steam’s sales charts.
Fans Call on Activision to Reinstate Modern Warfare 2 Mod
With fans understandably gutted, many called on Activision to reconsider the Cease and Desist. Some said they would request refunds through the Steam store, as they’d only bought the remastered game for the upcoming mod. Recent Steam reviews for the game are now 93% “Overwhelmingly Negative.”
A petition to revive the canceled mod has garnered more than 6,500 signatures.
Some of H2M’s developers also shared their thoughts, with TheWatchfulWolf posting an apology, before saying that the H2M team would “just make our own unique game.”
Fine. We'll just make our own unique game.
