Home security giant ADT has confirmed it was the victim of a recent cyberattack that compromised customer data.
Though no date for the breach was given, the company said it shut down access as soon as it was aware of the attack. In a regulatory filing published on Wednesday, it claimed that only a “small percentage” of its 6 million-plus customers were affected, but didn’t get into specifics with exact numbers. ADT says no banking or credit card data was leaked in the attack.
Customer data was compromised, including home addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses. Despite this data including customer addresses, the home security firm said it “had no reason to believe” that customer’s home security systems were at risk.
TechCrunch notes that it witnessed a seller on a hacking forum claim in a July 31st post that they had over 30,000 stolen customer records from ADT. The validity of this claim couldn’t be established.
ADT is one of the US’s largest home security companies. It partners with Google, with the tech giant’s Nest hardware forming an important part of its home security systems. It’s not yet clear if there are any wider security concerns surrounding the breach, but this is unlikely according to 9to5Google.
This isn’t the first time ADT has been in the news over security issues. In 2021, a former company technician revealed they had added their own email to customer accounts, allowing them to hack into and view customer security cameras almost 10,000 times over four years.
