Airbnb has teamed up with ChargePoint to help hosts install EV chargers for their guests.
The alliance lets U.S. hosts buy an exclusive, “affordable” package that includes the charger hardware, installation, management software, and support. The device itself starts at $399, and ChargePoint is cutting $100 off the installation price. You might qualify for up to a 30% tax credit on the charger cost.
If you’re a guest, you’ll use the ChargePoint app to recharge your car during your stay.
Airbnb claimed EV charger support is now a “coveted amenity” for renters. Homes with chargers get an average of two incremental booked nights, the company said, while searches for EV-friendly listings jumped 80% from 2022 to 2023.
The partnership could overcome one of the most common hurdles to EV charger adoption for home rentals. A charger installation costs an average of $1,000 to $2,500 in the U.S., according to Fixr. That can make the option impractical for Airbnb hosts, who might not recoup the costs through extra business.
The deal comes at an important moment. The EV market has been in trouble lately, leading brands like Ford and Tesla to offer incentives. The Airbnb arrangement with ChargePoint could provide a slight assist to EV adoption by reassuring frequent travellers that they’ll have charging during their next vacation.
Hosts might want to make sure their chargers are futureproof, however. ChargePoint has committed to supporting Tesla’s NACS port now that many car manufacturers are adopting the standard in the U.S., but that compatibility isn’t yet guaranteed with every installation. If you’re considering the offer, you may want to factor in NACS compatibility (including as an after-sale connector update) before moving ahead.
