The newly released iPhone 16 series supports 45W wired charging through the USB-C port, which is around 50% faster than the iPhone 15 series.
China’s Quality Certification Center, a regulatory body in China, released a certificate that reveals the upgraded charging specifications of all the iPhone 16 models.
THIS IS A VERY GOOD NEWS
All the iPhone 16 series has up to 45W wired charging! According to the CQC https://t.co/nlRIvrBib5 pic.twitter.com/8cUnGDsLMI— ShrimpApplePro 🍤 ずっと真夜中でいいのに (@VNchocoTaco) September 12, 2024
This is a significant leap for Apple, as last year’s iPhone 15 can charge at a maximum of 20W, while the Pro models offer charging speeds of around 29W. Apple still has a way to go to compete with the charging speeds offered by smartphone brands like OnePlus, which provides 80W wired fast charging with the OnePlus 12. However, it has finally matched the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra in terms of charging speed, as both support 45W wired fast charging.
It’s important to note that 45W is the peak charging power, and usually comes when the device is charging between 0% and 50%. Most smartphones drop in charging speed once the battery reaches the 50% mark, and the speed drops even further after crossing the 80% milestone. That’s why smartphones often take a long time to completely top up.
Additionally, the iPhone 16 series will only support 45W charging when used with a compatible charger. Since Apple no longer includes chargers with iPhones, you’ll have to buy a power adapter (whether from Apple or others) with enough output. It may take some time after launch to determine which adapters work best.
During the iPhone 16 launch event, Apple stated that the iPhone 16 would go from 0 to 50% charge in about 30 minutes when using a 20W USB-C adapter. So, with 45W charging, the iPhone should reach the same charge in significantly less time.
