Apple’s New Magic Keyboard, Mouse, and Trackpad Have USB-C, But Not Much Else

Key Takeaways

  • Apple announced updated versions of its Magic Keyboard, Mouse, and Trackpad.
  • All finally ditch the Lightning port for USB-C connectivity, but the Mouse’s port is still in an odd position.
  • Pricing remains the same for all three accessories.

In a long overdue move, Apple has dropped the Lightning port across its Magic Keyboard, Mouse, and Trackpad in favor of USB-C.

Announced alongside the iMac M4, the three accessories drop a connector that has been in use for Mac accessories since 2015.

Annoyingly, the charging port for the Apple Magic Mouse is still located on the underside of the device. We’d hoped that Apple might change its mind on this and finally move the charging port to a less awkward location, but it seems that isn’t the case. For now, the device still needs to be flipped over when the battery is running low — so it can’t be used while charging.

The design of all three accessories is identical to their predecessors, with the Keyboard, Mouse, and Trackpad available in a choice of black or white in stand-alone versions. You’ll need to buy the iMac M4 to get one of the more vibrant colors.

No Price Hikes for Apple’s USB-C Accessories

Pricing remains the same across the lineup:

Apple’s shift to USB-C has been a long time coming to these accessories. USB-C has been available on Macs starting with the 12-inch MacBook in 2015, and reached the iPad with the iad Pro in 2018. The iPhone didn’t make the switch until the iPhone 15 series was released in 2023.

Now the Lightning port has been relegated to the past, Apple owners picking up these accessories can finally get rid of their USB-C to Lightning cables in most cases.
