Key Takeaways

  • Blizzard is reportedly taking another shot at a shooter set in the Starcraft Universe.
  • This news comes from Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier’s upcoming book.
  • It will be Blizzard’s third attempt at a Starcraft shooter following canceled games Ghost and Ares.

Blizzard is developing a Starcraft shooter, as revealed in Jason Schreier’s new book “Play Nice: The Rise, Fall and Future of Blizzard Entertainment.”

In Schreier’s upcoming book, out October 8th, he mentions that Blizzard is currently working on a Starcraft shooter.

Schreier confirmed the claim in an interview with IGN editor Ryan McCaffrey for IGN’s Podcast Unlocked.

The passage towards the end of the book mentions the Blizzard Team’s efforts on the Starcraft shooter under Dan Hay, former executive producer of the Far Cry Series at Ubisoft.

It reads, “Most of the developers were laid off, while a few would remain with Hay to begin incubating, of all things, a new Starcraft shooter. Perhaps after Starcraft Ghost and Ares, the third time would be the charm.”

When asked if we might hear about the shooter if it’s not canceled, Schrier responded that it wasn’t canceled, saying, “…it is a project that, as far as I know, is in development.”

He added that this was the case at the time he wrote the book, saying, “Starcraft is not dead at Blizzard.”

According to Schrier, he hadn’t intended the book to be about unannounced news. Still, since Blizzard’s two failed Starcraft projects were mentioned, he felt the fact the company was working on a shooter in the Starcraft universe was worth mentioning.

This news follows Microsoft’s recent announcement that Starcraft: Remastered and Starcraft 2: Campaign Collection will be available on Game Pass on November 5th.

Third Time Could be the Charm for Blizzard and Starcraft

Blizzard’s first attempt at a Starcraft game, Starcraft Ghost, a tactical-action console game, was announced in 2002 but finally canceled in 2014 following a spate of delays.

Starcraft Ares’ second attempt was canceled in 2019 as Blizzard turned its attention to Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2.

Dan Hay joined Blizzard as GM/VP in 2022 after a decade at Ubisoft. He joined in 2011 to work on Far Cry 3 and served as executive producer and creative director across the Far Cry series, including Far Cry Blood Dragon, Far Cry 4, Far Cry Primal, Far Cry 5, Far Cry New Dawn, and Far Cry 6.

With Dan Hay at the helm, could Blizzard strike third time lucky?
