Bungie is rethinking the future of Destiny 2 expansions as the original game celebrates its tenth anniversary.
Following uncertainty over the game’s future after mass layoffs, the new release model with expansions and content updates will form a “new multi-year saga.”
Right now, Destiny 2 gets one major expansion a year and three episodes a year, but that’s all about to change, starting next summer.
Codename: Apollo lands in summer 2025 and will be the game’s first new expansion, billed as a “non-linear character-driven adventure.” This means players will be able to forge their own path through the world, making choices where they want to explore first, rather than the typical linear path the game has previously embraced.
Tyson Green, game director, said in a blog post that this decision was made by the team as it felt Destiny 2 has become “too rigid” and that the annual expansions seemed “too formulaic,” offering “little replay value.”
The team is embracing the chance to “try something different,” with Green keen to emphasize that this didn’t mean they would move away from focusing on great storytelling.
Destiny 2’s Expansion Roadmap
Each paid expansion will herald the beginning of a new season, with a “major” free update for all players landing alongside the expansion. Three months after an expansion arrives, another free episode will land as part of the season before the next expansion’s release.
So far we can expect Codename: Apollo in summer 2025, alongside the Codename: Arsenal free major update, followed by the Codename: Surge update in fall 2025.
In winter 2025, players will see the Codename: Behemoth expansion, alongside a free winter update, and a second free major update coming in spring 2026.
Each free update will refresh the core game with new content, including new weekly events, new features, combat meta and balance updates, rewards including weapons, armor, Artifact Mods, and more, and activities including Exotic missions, Strikes, or entirely new modes like Onslaught.
Other changes coming to Destiny 2 include modernizing the Director (the co-op shooter’s activity UI), “greatly improving” the Challenge Customization system to provide better rewards for those seeking more challenge, and a new Portal screen for quick access to core game activities.
Destiny Celebrates Tenth Anniversary with New Armor and International Art Show
The studio published a second blog post in honor of the game’s tenth anniversary, revealing a new set of armor for each class inspired by original concept art. From today, there will also be new challenges with the Legend title and seal as rewards, while Cayde-6’s signature Ace of Spades Hand Cannon will be turned into a real-life Nerf gun.
Three cities worldwide will also be exhibiting Destiny artwork by thirty artists, with sculptures, paintings, props, and merch for sale.
The Destiny 10th Anniversary Art Show will be in Gallery Nucleus, Los Angeles, from September 14th to 22nd, White Space Chelsea in New York City, from October 17th to 20th, and Gallery Different in London, UK, from November 6th to 10th. Entry is free.
