ChatGPT Now Offers Free Image Generation

Why Trust Techopedia
Key Takeaways

  • ChatGPT now offers free image generation from text prompts using the DALL-E 3 model.
  • The feature is the same as available to paid accounts.
  • Free users are limited to generating two images per day.

ChatGPT now lets free users generate a maximum of two images per day.

ChatGPT’s free tier can now be used to generate images using text prompts. Image generation has been available to ChatGPT’s Plus and Enterprise members since October 2023, and joins the list of features that have trickled down from the premium to the free tier

The two image maximum is understandably designed to upsell customers to the premium tier. However, another limitation is the platform offers no direct controls to modify or optimize the image as we see on other image generators such as MidJourney

Once you exhaust the two trials for the day, ChatGPT asks you to try again after 24 hours.

ChatGPT’s image generation is notably powered by OpenAI’s DALL-E 3 AI model, which is the same as ChatGPT’s paid subscribers. Therefore we can expect a similar level of finesse in the images as on the paid levels, though the final quality of the image, irrespective of any tool, depends on the nuances of the prompt. With this, OpenAI could also be looking to gather more training data for DALL-E before releasing its fourth generation.

While ChatGPT limits image generation attempts to just two, Microsoft’s Copilot in Bing (previously known as Bing Chat) and the Microsoft Designer’s Image Creator offer the same functionality for free without such limitations. Both Microsoft tools also rely on OpenAI’s DALL-E 3 model to generate images, which may inform consumer decisions on which platform to use – unless you are bound by other features such as custom GPTs or are using the app on your phone.

In comparison, chatbots from other tech giants, such as Google’s Gemini, already let you generate an unlimited number of images with text prompts for free. Moreover, Gemini gives at least four variations of the image for each prompt, which also exceeds ChatGPT.
