Sid Meier, Firaxis, and 2K have confirmed the existence of Civilization 7, the long-awaited follow-up to the classic historical strategy game series.
The teaser trailer (below) doesn’t show any gameplay, but does make clear that the new title isn’t straying far from the basic concept. You’ll guide an empire from its birth in ancient times through to the modern era as you build cities and compete against other civilizations.
There’s no firm release date beyond 2025, but a gameplay showcase will be revealed this august. Civilization 7 will be available on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S.
There’s ample interest for this game. The last main offering in the franchise, Civilization 6, was released in 2016. A lot will have changed both technically and in the industry in the nine years between releases.
Just what will change isn’t certain. The previous game included significant updates to elements like city development and research, and made it easier to achieve a peaceful victory through culture. It was critically acclaimed upon release. That sets a high standard for Civilization 7, but also makes standing out difficult.
