The Disney+ paid sharing feature is coming to the service for US, Canada, Europe, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and the Asia-Pacific region subscribers.
You can now add one member outside your household to your subscription. This costs $6.99 per month for the Basic plan and $9.99 per month for the premium plan.
Suppose you’d rather not add an extra member. In that case, anyone outside your household can set up their own Disney+ subscription and transfer over an existing profile to keep their watch history and settings intact.
Note that certain profiles, such as primary account holder profiles, minors’ profiles, and those set to Junior Mode aren’t eligible to be transferred.
Subscribers Can Watch Disney+ Away From Home
It’s also now possible to watch Disney+ when you’re away from home or traveling. When you’re trying to watch on a device away from home, you may see a message saying “This TV doesn’t seem to be part of the household for this account.”
You can choose “I’m away from home” or select “Update household” if you moved recently and want to reset your household location.
Both these options will send a one-time passcode to the email address linked to your Disney+ account.
Disney+ announced this account sharing feature at the start of August, but this is the first we’ve heard of the pricing and full details.
Other Streamings Also Tighten Restrictions on Account Sharing
The service isn’t alone in tightening restrictions on account sharing. In 2023, Netflix announced a crackdown on sharing accounts with friends or family outside households.
Netflix tracks IP addresses and scrutinizes device IDs and home addresses more closely. It allows subscribers to add “sub-accounts” from $7.99 per member, per month, though you can’t add members to a Standard with ads account.
With another round of price hikes hitting Disney+ subscribers this fall, the price for paid account sharing might be too much for some subscribers to justify.
