Drone maker DJI has launched the Osmo Action 5 Pro, an action camera that the company claims features industry-first advancements and pro-level image quality.
The Osmo Action 5 Pro is equipped with a 1/1.3in sensor with a 2.4μm pixel size, and a high dynamic range of 13.5 stops. The camera captures images in 10-bit D-Log M and can record high dynamic range low-light video in 4K at 60FPS. The sensor and on-device processing improve performance in low-light conditions. There’s also a Super Night mode that uses AI to reduce image noise.
The camera captures 40MP still images, and records slow-motion video in 4K at 120FPS or 1080p at 240FPS.
In terms of design, the Osmo Action 5 Pro looks almost identical to its predecessor, the Action 4. It features larger front and rear tempered glass OLED touch screens with a peak brightness of 1,000 nits. The main highlight is its high-performance 4nm chip, which is paired with machine learning algorithms that allow the camera to detect the subject’s position and automatically adjust the composition to keep the subject centered in every frame. Users can ideally capture great shots without needing a gimbal.
The camera is waterproof up to a depth of 20m and includes a built-in color temperature sensor, allowing it to capture accurate colors even underwater. Users can also configure the camera to automatically start recording when it’s submerged and stop when it’s brought back above water.
The Osmo Action 5 comes with a 1,950mAh battery, which is twice the capacity of the Action 4. The battery lasts for four hours, which DJI says is made possible by the new 4nm chip. Additionally, the company claims the camera can last up to 3.6 hours when shooting in sub-zero temperatures. To charge the battery, there’s a 30W USB-C charger which provides two hours of shooting time after 15 minutes of charging.
DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro Compared to the GoPro Hero 13 Black
The main competitor of the Osmo Action 5 Pro is the GoPro Hero 13 Black, which was recently released. They primarily compete in resolution and viewing angles.
The Hero 13 can shoot at a maximum resolution of 5.3K at 60FPS, which is clearly superior in terms of numbers compared to the Action 5. However, the Action 5 potentially outperforms the Hero 13 in low-light conditions due to its new sensor. The Hero 13 also leads in terms field of view (FOV). The Hero 13 reaches an ultra-wide 177 degrees, whereas the Action 5 offers a narrower 155-degree FOV.
While both cameras look equally impressive on paper, the real differences will only be clear when they are compared side by side in the real world.
That said, the Osmo Action 5 Pro is priced at $349 for the Standard combo and $449 for the Adventure Combo. It’s available for purchase starting today from the DJI official store.
