With iPadOS 18, EU users can also download several third-party marketplaces on iPad, including AltStore Pal and SetApp Mobile.  Last month, the Epic Games Store was released on Android and iOS as well. The Android version of the app is available worldwide, but the iOS version is only available in Europe. The company has also assured users that it will make the Epic Games Store available in Japan, most likely by next year.

Epic Games and Apple Controversy

Four years ago, Epic Games introduced a few changes related to digital payments for Fortnite. However, according to Apple, these changes violated its terms for developers on the platform and led to both the removal of Fortnite from the App Store as well as a ban on Epic’s account. Following this, a legal battle ensued between Apple and Epic.

In Europe, the European Union enacted the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which required Apple to allow third-party app stores on the iPhone. As expected, Apple was not happy with the decision, stating that allowing third-party apps would cause security and privacy concerns for users. While these concerns may have been legitimate, critics argued that Apple was mainly protecting its app revenue.

Apple had no choice but to accept the EU orders. The EU gave Apple six months to comply with the regulations.
