Key Takeaways

  • Ford has introduced the 2024 Mustang Mach-E.
  • The GT trim with the Performance Upgrade can reportedly outrun a high-end Model Y.
  • Other upgrades include more powerful rear motors and extra range.

Ford has unveiled the 2024 Mustang Mach-E, which it said can outperform the fastest crossover SUVs from Tesla and Porsche.

Ford claimed the new Mustang Mach-E GT with a Performance Upgrade package delivers 0-60MPH in 3.3 seconds, besting the Model Y Performance’s 3.5-second time and the 4.9 seconds of the Porsche Macan 4 Electric. The automaker also touted a quarter-mile time of 11.8 seconds.

As with some high-speed options from other electric car manufacturers, the Performance Upgrade is enabled through software. Mach-E GT owners can either get it when purchasing the car or buy it later as an update. It comes standard with the offroad-ready Rally model.

The company promised improvements across other trim levels. All Mustang Mach-E variants have a new rear motor that provides more torque. This upgrade, along with other adjustments, has increased range across the line. The base Select with a standard-range battery and rear-wheel drive has an EPA-estimated 250-mile range (an extra 20mi), while the Premium with an extended-range battery and all-wheel drive can manage 320mi (also up 20mi).

The GT offers a 280-mile range, while the new-for-2024 Rally offers 265mi.

Drivers can expect quicker charging, Ford added. The standard battery now charges from 10% to 80% in 32.3 minutes, or 5.7 minutes faster than it did when the Mustang Mach-E made its debut. The extended-range battery offers a similar recharge in 36.2 minutes, or 8.8 minutes faster than before.

Ford has revised the EV’s sometimes-criticized interface. It’s now easier to find favorite apps and key information, the company said. It should also be quicker to switch audio sources and change settings.

The 2024 Mustang Mach-E lineup starts at $39,995 in the US for the Select trim with a standard battery and RWD. The Premium with the 320-mile range begins at $46,995.  The GT starts at $53,995, and it will cost $995 to get the Performance Upgrade by itself ($745 if bundled with certain wheel or appearance packages). The Rally edition is priced at $59,995.

The 2024 refresh may be necessary given a rougher-than-expected EV market that led to a change in strategy. Ford recently delayed multiple electric-only models due to cooler demand, while its rival Tesla saw its first quarterly drop in vehicle delivers for nearly four years. The Mach-E is typically more expensive than a comparable Model Y (the Model Y Performance currently costs $42,390), but the upgrades may draw customers who previously ignored Ford’s electrified selection.
