Google has released an essential update for the Gmail and Google Chat apps that will improve their use on tablets and foldable Android smartphones.
With more smartphone brands releasing foldable smartphones, like Samsung’s recent Galaxy Z Fold 6, software companies have realized that foldable devices might represent the future. They’re now focusing on features specifically beneficial for larger screens. Google has released a new update for Gmail and Google Chat app on Android built for this new hardware as well as tablets.
After updating the Gmail app on your foldable phone or tablet, you’ll see a new formatting bar when you tap the “Compose” button. It provides options to change the font, create bullet lists, and more.
While these formatting options existed before, you had to select the text, choose the “Format” option, and then select the desired style. The new formatting bar streamlines this process, reducing the number of steps needed to format your text.
Another useful change introduced in this update, especially for foldables and tablets, is the new shortcuts for the Gmail and Chat app. Once you connect your external keyboard and access the Gmail app, simply tap the “?” icon, and you’ll be presented with a list of different shortcuts. These shortcuts will help you quickly perform certain actions. For instance, you can press the “A” button on your keyboard to perform the Reply All action.
Smart Compose is Coming to Android Tablets and Foldables
In addition to these features, Google is also introducing Smart Compose on Android tablets and foldables. If you often use Gmail Web, you might have noticed this feature in action. It intelligently completes your email. For instance, if you are replying to an email, you simply need to type “Hello,” and this feature will suggest the name of the person you are replying to. You can swipe right on this suggestion to accept it, or press the “Tab” button on your physical keyboard if it is attached to your device.
While these new features benefit all foldable phones and tablets, their timing just before the Pixel 9 Pro Fold launch seems strategic. Although not groundbreaking, they’ll be interesting to try out on the new device.
