Key Takeaways

  • Contextual Smart Replies is an enhanced version of Smart Replies on Gmail.
  • It minimizes time and user effort while giving detailed responses.
  • The feature is only available to paid subscribers.

Gmail is now getting Gemini’s contextual smart replies to help you generate detailed responses.

The AI-powered feature was first announced at the search giant’s annual I/O Developer conference in May. It is essentially an enhanced version of the Smart Reply feature that has been around since 2017. The difference between smart replies and contextual replies is that the former generates shorter responses compared to detailed ones on the latter.

The boosted functionality of the Contextual Smart Replies will generate a detailed response to capture the intent of your message. In a blog post, Google says that this Gemini-powered feature will take the full content of the email thread into consideration. Users have to initiate an email reply after which they will see three suggested responses at the bottom of the screen. Long-pressing on a response offers a quick preview of the text whereas tapping will insert the suggestion. Users can also make further edits to the generated responses.

The Contextual Smart Replies on Gmail aims to save time when responding to emails while also being brief and to the point instead of one-liner replies. It also minimizes a user’s effort in crafting detailed responses.

The features will begin rolling out today with full availability in the coming weeks. It is only available for Google Workspace users with the paid tiers including Google One AI premium, Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, and Education Premium. The Contextual Smart Replies joins the Gemini QnA that was released recently.
