Santa Monica Studio, the developer behind the much-loved God of War series, is reportedly working on a new intellectual property (IP).

The information officially came to light through a LinkedIn post by Glauco Longhi, a character supervisor at the Sony-owned studio. Longhi’s post, now deleted, indicated that he has rejoined the team to oversee character development for this new project.

Longhi, who previously worked on notable titles such as Uncharted 4 at Naughty Dog and both God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök at Santa Monica Studio, had briefly departed to contribute to The Callisto Protocol and Unknown Worlds Entertainment.

His return to Santa Monica earlier this year marks a significant move for the studio as they embark on this new venture.

Details about the new IP remain scarce, with no official announcements from Santa Monica Studio or Sony. However, there have been ongoing rumors and hints from Cory Barlog, the creative director at Santa Monica, suggesting a possible shift towards a sci-fi theme.

Barlog, known for his work on the God of War series, has repeatedly expressed interest in exploring sci-fi, fueling speculation that the new IP might be set in space.

In addition to the new IP, there are rumors about a potential third installment in the God of War series. Following the release of God of War Ragnarök in 2022 and its subsequent Valhalla DLC in 2023, fans are eager to see what comes next from the beloved game studio. However, with the confirmation of a new IP, Santa Monica Studio appears to be diversifying its portfolio.

The studio, known for its relatively small but highly skilled team of around 250 employees, is potentially capable of simultaneously working on multiple projects. A new God of War and the sci-fi project may both be on the table, but time will tell.
