Key Takeaways

  • The generative AI tool, powered by Gemini, provides additional information and summaries for search terms.
  • Google introduced ads to AI Overview earlier this month.
  • The service is currently available in six languages, with the company stating the expansion will bring it to one billion users globally each month.

Starting this week, Google AI Overview will be rolled out to more than 100 countries and territories, making the service available in more languages along the way.

First introduced in the United States in May this year, then elsewhere in August, the feature uses generative AI to provide summaries for search terms at the top of the page. Google’s algorithms will analyze the details to produce an overview of the subject.

Relevant links are also included to provide further information to a query, unlocking further understanding and concise explanations of complex topics but it is not without flaws. The AI Overview feature has produced notable failures, including inappropriate and ridiculous output.

Earlier this month, Google confirmed it was bringing ads to AI overview.

The company has said that ads will be shown in specific slots on the web page, as well as clear markers to differentiate between organic and sponsored results.

Google Also Expands AI Overview to More Languages

The fresh expansion means AI Overview will have more than one billion monthly users across the world, according to the U.S. tech behemoth.

To further support this growth, Google is working on language access. At present, the information is available in English, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish.

More languages are likely to follow as the service expands.

With the introduction of the Gemini-powered tool, Google has been working to add more depth to search, including more ways to deliver links to what it believes are relevant websites.

A right-hand link display has been added on desktop and mobile (to a lesser extent on the latter), accessible by clicking the icons at the top right of the page. This has been bolstered by the introduction of further links within the body of AI Overview, which Google says has increased traffic to those websites supporting the features.
