According to TechCrunch, Google Maps is rolling out Speedometer and Speed Limits on iPhone and CarPlay.
Google confirmed on Tuesday that this is a global rollout, so if it’s not yet active on your device, you can expect it to be available soon.
When the feature is enabled while navigating in Google Maps, drivers can see their vehicle speed in miles or kilometers, depending on their region. The speed indicator also changes colors depending on driving speed, to remind people to drive within the local speed limit.
In support documentation, Google urges drivers not to depend on the speedometer as an indication of driving speed, saying that it is for “informational use only.” Drivers should always use their vehicle’s physical speedometer to check driving speed.
How to Use Speedometer and Speed Limits on iPhone
Here’s how to enable the feature in Google Maps on iPhone:
- Launch Google Maps and tap your profile picture.
- Go to Settings > Navigation.
- Select Driving Options and enable the feature.
It’s about time Speedometer and Speed Limits finally arrived on iOS — the feature has been available on Android for over five years. It first launched in select markets at the start of 2019 before expanding to over 40 countries in May of the same year.
