Google shook things up last year in the tablet market with their Pixel Tablet. Unlike traditional tablets, it offered a dual personality, transforming into a smart home display with the help of a separate speaker dock.

While the first iteration was a promising start, there’s room for improvement — and it seems Google is about to unleash some in the upcoming Pixel Tablet 2.

Although concrete details remain scarce, the breadcrumbs suggest that the Google Pixel Tablet 2 may retain the same design as its predecessor, including the 10.95-inch OLED display and built-in polished metal ring stand.

While some users desired a standalone Pixel Tablet, the May 2024 relaunch likely addressed that concern. This paves the way for other refinements in the upcoming Pixel Tablet 2.

Here is everything we know on the Google Pixel Tablet 2 rumors and speculations including what we would like to see in the upcoming release.

When Will The Google Pixel Tablet 2 Come Out?

Estimated Launch Date: August 2024

While Google hasn’t officially announced the Pixel Tablet 2’s release date, some media invites hint at an unveiling during their Made by Google event on August 13. This news comes courtesy of invitations sent out to select media personalities.

Marques Brownlee, a tech reviewer who is one of the invitees, shared the private invite on his X page, which revealed that the new “Pixel portfolio of devices” alongside Google AI and Android software are amongst the items to be showcased in the upcoming Google event.

If we interpret the meaning of the new “Pixel portfolio of devices ” that includes all upcoming Pixel devices, including the Google Pixel Tablet 2, Pixel Watch 3, Pixel Buds Pro 2, and Pixel 9 series.

Already, some code names that emerged in the first beta of Android 14 QPR3 were interpreted by experts to be a sign of work in progress as regards Pixel Tablet 2 development.

Based on this information, we expect the Google Pixel Tablet 2 to be announced alongside other Pixel products on August 13, 2024, during the Made By Google presentation in Mountain View, California.

Google Pixel Tablet 2 Expected Upgrades

Android 15, Google Tensor G4

The current Google Pixel Tablet was launched with Android 13 Operating System (OS) and Google Tensor G2 System on a Chip (SoC).

Since the Android 15 OS is expected to launch the same day as the Google Pixel Tablet 2, we expect the tab to run on this latest OS. This OS will usher in new capabilities, including artificial intelligence functions. Android 15 is also likely to support up to seven years of software updates.

Another new upgrade we anticipate in the upcoming Google Pixel Tablet 2 is on the chipset. Google has been using its silicon since the launch of the Pixel 6 smartphone, and the first Pixel Tablet last year featured the Tensor G2 SoC.

Since the Google Pixel 9 series, which is expected to launch in August alongside the Pixel Tablet 2, is rumored to be powered by the Tensor G4 SoC, we also expect Google to equip its upcoming tab with this new chipset.

What We Want To See In The Pixel Tablet 2

Here are a few things we would love to see in the upcoming Google Pixel Tablet 2.

Better Audio

While the Pixel Tablet audio doesn’t sound bad, we still want to hear more from its speaker dock — which costs nearly $130 when purchased separately. The current Pixel Tablet dock has a 43.5mm driver, the same size as the smaller Nest Hub.

Comparably, that’s smaller than the 75mm drivers in the more powerful speakers like the Nest Audio and Nest Hub Max. For a device that costs up to $500, we expect something more akin to these Google higher-end audio products.

We hope the upcoming Google Pixel Tablet 2 will be equipped with a more powerful audio dock, considering the price tag.

Better integration with Next Hub Features

Some Next Hub features are currently missing in the Pixel Tablet, and we hope to see the issue addressed in the upcoming Pixel Tablet 2.

Features like motion gesture support, support for continued conversations, the ability to manually customize the sensitivity for “Hey Google” commands and the ability to pause music by just waving at the Google Next Hub Max are all lacking in the current Google Pixel Tablet.

If the upcoming Google Pixel Tablet will have the potential to replace the Next Hub series, then Google needs to create a device that mirrors the Nest Hub experience.

Smarter Speaker Dock

Google needs to make the charging speaker dock in the upcoming Pixel Tablet smarter. The current Pixel Tablet dock can’t do anything unless the Tablet is attached to it. Considering the price Google charges for the dock, we expect it to do more when the tablet isn’t attached.

Google can consider shipping two speaker dock options in the upcoming Pixel Tablet 2: a standard model that mimics the first-gen Pixel Tablet and a higher-end model with improved audio quality and built-in capability for tablet-free use.

Better Assistant Functionality

Pixel Tablet acts more as a display when docked than a true Android device. Google should try and differentiate its Tablet mode from the docked functionality. This will allow the tablet to function like any smart speaker or smart hub when docked, with the option to access all advanced features by logging fully into the Tablet mode. We hope to see this change in the Pixel Tablet 2.

Google Pixel Tablet 2 Launch Price

Estimated Launch Price: $500

The first Pixel Tablet retail price started at $499.99 for the base model. The upcoming Google Pixel Tablet 2 may also mimic this price and start at $499.99.

However, if the upcoming Pixel Tablet has some substantial upgrades in design and hardware, we may see a slight increase in the price. The speaker dock’s price of $129.99 is also expected to remain the same.

The Bottom Line

With the Made By Google event on the horizon, anticipation is building for the Pixel Tablet 2. We hope to see a smarter speaker dock, improved Assistant integration, richer parity with Nest Hub features, and a more immersive audio experience.

If Google gets this right, it’s a more compelling offering this time around.
