  • Google’s Project Astra has been postponed until 2025.
  • The project aims to deliver AI agents that interact live with the physical world on multiple devices.
  • The delay highlights Google’s cautious approach amid intense competition from rivals like Anthropic and OpenAI.

Google’s next-generation AI agents, part of its ambitious Project Astra, will not be launched until at least 2025.

CEO Sundar Pichai revealed this in a remark following the company’s Q3 earnings call on Tuesday.

Project Astra is a part of Google’s broader full-stack AI approach, which Pichai outlined in three parts: a global AI infrastructure, cutting-edge research teams, and a product reach that touches billions globally.

According to The Information, the project was reportedly readied for a December launch but this revelation from Pichai means that’s no longer the case.

What is Google’s Project Astra?

Project Astra, originally unveiled at Google I/O 2024 in May, aspires to create AI agents capable of multimodal understanding and interaction with the physical world in real-time.

Google says Project Astra is its most advanced AI assistant yet, designed to be more natural and helpful than previous assistants, and will be available on a variety of devices like smartphones, smart glasses, and computers.

With Project Astra delayed until 2025, Google appears to be taking a more cautious approach. This strategic shift comes after a strong Q3 earnings report, which boosted the company’s stock price.

This postponement comes amid competition from other tech giants working on similar technologies. Anthropic recently introduced “Computer Use”, an AI agent capable of controlling apps and web browsers on a PC. OpenAI is also reportedly developing its own AI agent that will be capable of acting on its own with its environment.
