Google’s Pixel Watch 3 includes major display upgrades that could get rid of the notoriously thick bezels, according to a leak.
Android Authority claimed the flagship Wear OS smartwatch would not only come in a larger 45mm model, but shrink the bezels on both sizes to 4.5mm (0.17in). That’s still not thin compared to the latest Apple Watch and some Android-friendly smartwatches, but it should look much better than before.
The Pixel Watch 3 should also double the brightness to 2,000 nits, making it considerably easier to see in bright sunlight. You might also see a jump from the 384 x 384 resolution of the Watch 2 to 408 x 408 (for the 41mm version) and 456 x 456 (45mm).
The new timepiece will reportedly stick to the Snapdragon W5 platform from last year. Recent FCC listings have hinted at ultra-wideband (UWB) support that could help with precision Find My Device tracking, whether it’s for the watch or other nearby items. It might also be useful for Digital Car Key support on newer vehicles.
Google is expected to unveil the Pixel Watch 3 alongside the Pixel 9 series on August 13th. As with Pixel phones, then, the company appears less concerned about raw performance and more about functionality improvements. The new wearable should serve as a showcase for Wear OS 5.
There will be tough competition. Samsung is rumored to be on the cusp of launching a Galaxy Watch Ultra that would mate a large display with outdoors-ready features. That device would make the most sense for Galaxy phone users, but it could take some sales away from Google.
