Horizon Zero Dawn Makers Pivot to Live Service for Sony

Key Takeaways

  • Sony’s live service plans include Guerilla Games’ next Horizon title.
  • A planned third single-player Horizon game won’t arrive until after the Horizon live service game releases.
  • Concord’s release and refunding have not caused the Horizon live service game to be canceled.

Guerilla Games will be deviating from the proven single-player path for the next game in its Horizon series, according to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier.

While guesting on Spawn Wave’s Spawncast, Schreier revealed that a third mainline game in the Horizons series would still be “a ways off”, with the rumored live service Horizons game being the studio’s first priority.

It wasn’t too long ago that Sony was promising to go all-in on live service titles, with the aim of bringing 12 live service games to PC and PS5 by the beginning of 2026. However, those lofty ambitions were soon grounded, with Sony president Hiroki Totoki later confirming that the number of Live Service titles expected within that period had shrunk to just six.

The Horizon games have stepped back into the spotlight recently, with a fan-pleasing, substantial cameo in Astro Bot, as well as the upcoming release of Lego Horizon Adventures and Horizon Zero Dawn remastered.

Following the high-profile failure of Concord and rumors of production troubles behind the scenes on Bungie’s Marathon, Sony may be banking on Guerilla Games making the most of Horizon’s resurgence to serve up a live service hit from a recognizable property. As Schreier mentioned on the Spawncast with regards to Sony’s live service plans: “Horizon is one of the few ones that hasn’t been canceled or hasn’t come out and flopped the way Concord did.”

The world of Horizon is vast, with many facets of its strange, machine-populated post-apocalyptic world left to be explored. With multiple tribes available to serve as playable factions and a gameplay style that melds gathering, exploration, and combat, there’s no reason to think that the Horizon series couldn’t successfully expand into a live service title. However, time will tell if audiences still have an appetite for this style of game by the time Guerrilla Games has finished cooking it up.
