Starting September 11th, Ikea’s Dirigera hub supports Matter smart home devices and potentially simplifies setups.
Two years after its initial announcement, Ikea’s Dirigera hub now has an update that turns it into a bridge between the brand’s smart home products and Matter-compatible systems. This update improves on previous beta support, allowing Ikea’s Zigbee-based products to connect with Matter-compatible devices across brands.
“With the introduction of #Matter support on DIRIGERA, we are taking a significant step towards creating a more seamless and interoperable #smarthome experience. Users no longer need to worry about compatibility – everything will just work together, easily and efficiently.” @IKEA… pic.twitter.com/FNjYeMinMJ

“We know that many people perceive smart products as complicated” said David Granath, Range Manager at Ikea of Sweden. “Our goal is to change that by promoting better and simpler integrations of technology into everyday life.”
Matter Standard
Matter, a smart home standard supported by Amazon, Apple, Google, Samsung, and others, streamlines integration across devices from different brands. This open connectivity protocol theoretically delivers easy and secure communication between IoT devices. Matter-compatible devices work with various ecosystems, including Amazon Alexa, Apple Home, and Google Home, and can be controlled through apps and voice assistants.
Matter operates locally over Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and Thread, without needing cloud connections, and includes built-in security features. To use a Matter device, you need a Matter controller that connects it to your network, manages communications, and enables remote access. The controller must be constantly powered and connected.
Which Devices Are Compatible with Matter?
Matter supports various devices, including air purifiers, door locks, light bulbs, plugs, security sensors, smart blinds, robot vacuums, and thermostats. Ikea’s lighting, sound, air purification, remote controllers, and sensors are now also compatible with Matter.
Matter provides basic controls on systems like Apple Home and Amazon Alexa. For advanced features such as dynamic lighting or robot vacuum mapping, you’ll need the manufacturer’s app. Currently, Matter doesn’t support cameras, home security systems, water heaters, or heat pumps, but future updates may add energy management features.
A list of Matter-compatible devices is available here. Note that this list features only native Matter products and excludes devices connected via a Matter Bridge, so the actual number of compatible products is higher.
Adding Matter support to existing devices is a key part of Ikea’s strategy, and the Dirigera hub with Matter support will be available in all stores that carry it. The Dirigera hub costs $70.
