What is an Activation Lock?

The iOS 18 Release Candidate, available since September 9th, introduces Activation Lock for key iPhone parts like the battery, camera, and display, extending its protection from stolen iPhones to separate parts. This feature prompts for the original owner’s Apple ID password when a used part is detected, aiming to prevent the resale of stolen components.

BetaProfiles reports that you can tap Cancel and continue using the iPhone without entering the previous owner’s Apple Account. But the replaced part will be marked as “Unknown Part” in Settings.

The response to the innovation has been mixed: some view it as a deterrent for thieves, while others worry it could complicate repairs.

When Will Activation Lock Be Available?

Apple’s parts Activation Lock is included in iOS 18 and will be available with the public release on Monday, September 16. It will be compatible with iPhone XR and newer models. This feature is exclusive to iPhones and does not apply to iPads using iPadOS 18.

iOS 18 includes over 250 updates, such as customizable app icons, satellite messaging, full RCS support, split-screen multitasking, AI enhancements for Siri, and improved encryption and on-device data processing.
