When is the iPhone 16 Pro Coming Out?
Release Date: September 20, 2024
The iPhone 16 Pro is available in stores from September 20, 2024, following its debut at Apple’s ‘Glowtime’ event on September 9, 2024.
Those wanting to be first in the virtual queue could order the iPhone 16 Pro directly from the Apple website from September 13.
iPhone 16 Pro Display & Processor
ProMotion 120Mz Refresh Rate, Always On Display, A18 Pro Chip
The shining feature of the iPhone 16 Pro is either the display or the processor.
The screen is a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion and Always-On technologies.
ProMotion is a slightly fancy way of saying a 120Hz refresh rate. It places the Pro alongside top Android smartphones and perhaps makes iPhone 16 users a little envious when they experience the extra-smooth UI that the higher refresh rate offers.
That said, both models have the same 460 PPI pixel density and a peak brightness of 2,000 nits.
The A18 Pro chip, using second-generation 3nm technology, includes a 6-core CPU (which breaks down into two performance cores and four efficiency cores), which Apple claims makes it 15% faster than the previous A17 Pro chip, and 20% more power-efficient.
It comes with a 16-core Neural Engine, which will come into its own when Apple Intelligence (Apple’s take on machine learning and artificial intelligence) launches later in 2024. Keeping AI onboard the device may reduce issues or concerns about privacy and security and let users interact with Siri via natural language processing (NLP).
Like the rest of the iPhone 16 range, the Pro comes with WiFi 7 and USB-C as standard.
iPhone 16 Pro Camera
- 48MP primary camera with a quad-pixel sensor and 4K 120 FPS video recording in Dolby Vision.
- 48MP Ultra-Wide camera with autofocus and macro capabilities.
- 5x Telephoto camera for zoom.
The standout camera feature over the standard iPhone 16 is the ability to capture 4K video at 120FPS with Dolby Vision HDR, allowing you to adjust the framerate from your typical 24FPS to slow-motion.
Four microphones capture sound, while also allowing spatial audio on devices that support it. Voice Memos are also likely to have a much clearer sound.
iPhone 16 Pro Design
Titanium Finish, Thin Borders
As our images show, the iPhone 16 Pro has a very sleek and premium look.
The ‘lightweight and durable’ titanium, with a micro-blasted finish, offers the thinnest borders on any Apple product, meaning the iPhone 16 Pro weighs in at 199 grams.
In comparison, the iPhone 16 is lighter at 170g but with a 0.2-inch shorter display.
Along with the Action button, which will be familiar to previous Pro owners, the iPhone 16 Pro comes with the new touch-sensitive Camera Control, meaning you can capture photos and videos with a click of a button.
A light press of the button allows you to focus an image, and swiping left and right allows you to alter the aperture and zoom settings.
iPhone 16 Pro Colors
Black, Natural, White, Desert Titanium (Gold)
The iPhone 16 Pro comes in three colors that will be familiar to owners of the iPhone 15 Pro — black, natural, and white — but adds a gold-hued Desert Titanium.
Note you may see these referred to as Black Titanium, White Titanium, Natural Titanium and Desert Titanium.
What is the iPhone 16 Pro Launch Price?
Launch Price: $999
We called it, with the iPhone 16 Pro launching at a price of $999.
Whether the $200 cost is worth the extra features may depend on your budget, but Apple can be thanked for keeping the price aligned with the launch prices right back to the iPhone 11 Pro.
iPhone 14 Pro vs. iPhone 15 Pro vs. iPhone 16 Pro
The Bottom Line
Apple always delivers, and while we wait to see how much AI impacts the daily use of the iPhone 16 Pro later in 2024, Apple has again delivered one of the best phones of the year.
For those who are debating a new iPhone or an upgrade from a previous model, the A18 Pro chip, the additional screen size, and the Camera button (along with the much-improved cameras) are features that are worth considering.
While we suspect that this is an evolutionary year for Apple and that the iPhone 17 will be a larger step up in features, it is hard not to admire the craftsmanship that Apple delivers year after year.
