Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro might be its first smartphone to record 4K video at 120 frames per second, according to a leak.
Sources for 9to5Mac claim the new high-end iPhone will double the 4K frame rate of the 15 Pro, which tops out at 60FPS. If you attach an external USB-C drive, you’ll reportedly have the option of shooting 4K ProRes footage at 120FPS.
The company is also said to be making a host of smaller upgrades. QuickTake videos (where you press and hold the shutter button to start recording) would jump from 1080p to 4K. You could remove wind noise, and both pause and resume recording. With still shots, you could snap lossless JPEG-XL photos as well as Spatial Photos destined for the Vision Pro.
Apple has also been testing 8K video with the iPhone 16 Pro, the insiders maintain. It’s not certain that this will make it to the shipping model, though. While the main and (reportedly upgraded) ultrawide cameras could handle it with their 48-megapixel sensors, the 12MP telephoto would still be limited to 4K.
The contacts also shed more light on how the rumored camera button will work.
Previous reports have hinted the capacitive key will let you focus with a gentle press, capture with a harder press, and slide to tweak the exposure or zoom. However, it’s now said to work with third-party camera apps, both to launch them and to take pictures.
The iPhone 16 Pro series is unofficially expected to get several key upgrades over its predecessor, including larger 6.3- and 6.9-inch screens with thinner bezels, a 5X telephoto on the smaller model, and an A18 Pro chip with speedups for Apple Intelligence. Analysts at TrendForce also predict that Apple might raise the small Pro’s base storage to 256GB with an according price hike to $1,099.
Apple is widely believed to be introducing the iPhone 16 line, new Apple Watch models, and new AirPods at its September 9th “Glowtime” event. It will also likely provide release dates for at least some of its major software updates, such as iOS 18 and macOS Sonoma, and might clarify when Apple Intelligence will arrive.
