Hans Zimmer has contributed the main theme to Bioware’s Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and fans can listen to the track right now.
While Baldur’s Gate 3 proved that classic, character-focused RPGs can still thrive in 2024 and beyond, Dragon Age: The Veilguard can carry that baton even further. Given the back-to-back poor reception to Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem, Bioware needs a big hit to win back the gaming crowd.
If Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s new action-oriented approach succeeds, it could prove that there’s life in some of Bioware’s most beloved franchises yet. And the studio is doing all it can to sell this new, pulse-pounding vision of what Dragon Age can be, including enlisting the aid of renowned composer Hans Zimmer to provide the game’s main theme.
Having composed some of the most memorable film scores of all time, including Gladiator, Blade Runner 2049, and multiple collaborations with Christopher Nolan, Zimmer’s pedigree couldn’t be higher. His Dragon Age: The Veilguard track features all the bombast and grandiosity you’d expect, fitting right in next to Thedas’ other memorable scores.
Time will tell how Zimmer’s Veilguard track will stack up compared to the series’ other main themes, including Inon Zur’s title theme for Origins and Trevor Morris’ Inquisiton theme that had many players sitting at the main menu just to hear the song’s triumphant chorus blare. Still, at the very least, this high-profile addition to The Veilguard is likely to get players talking ahead of the game’s October 31 launch, which is exactly what Bioware needs.
After years of false starts and heightened fan expectations, Bioware is pulling out all the stops to ensure that The Veilguard is a return to form for Dragon Age. With top-tier voice talent bringing its characters to life, Zimmer bringing some extra prestige to its score, and the studio’s secret weapon Trick Weekes in the lead writer role, it just might be worth the wait.
