The next game in the legendary Like a Dragon (formerly known as Yakuza) series has finally been confirmed. And as completely expected from a series that’s known for going over the top and bonkers, the latest entry is completely over the top and bonkers. Fortunately, we know the Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii release date, as well as the price, gameplay, and trailers, too.
The aptly titled Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii takes the series in a swashbuckling direction, as players take control of Yakuza legend Goro Majima as he becomes a pirate off the coast of Hawaii. While the completely out-there plotline may imply that this is a spin-off title in the vein of last year’s Like a Dragon: Ishin (which placed the cast of the series in Bakumatsu-era Japan), this is a full-blown canon adventure for Majima.

And unlike Like a Dragon Gaiden, which had its dub added via a patch Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza will have an English dub at launch alongside the original Japanese and a Chinese dub.

What is Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii?
The latest Like a Dragon spin-off from the Yakuza series
Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is a brand new adventure starring the series fan-favourite character Goro Majima who has washed up on an island in the Pacific Ocean without his memories. While getting involved in the community of Rich Island, pirates attack, and this ends up causing a chain of events that lead Goro to become the captain of his own pirate ship. The game will also take him to the water-bound fortress known as Madlantis, as well as putting him on the search for a lost treasure – classic pirate stuff.
Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza takes place roughly half a year after the events of Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth, and is a new release in the Like a Dragon Gaiden chronology (in-fact the game’s Japanese title translates to Like a Dragon 8 Gaiden: Pirates in Hawaii).
Unlike Infinite Wealth, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii’s gameplay features real-time combat like the original titles in the series. Majima has access to his classic Mad Dog fighting style, and the brand new pirate-themed Sea Dog style.
The Bottom Line
Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii looks to be a fresh new take on the franchise. Despite the silly theme, the Like a Dragon series has shown its prowess at making even the most out-there premise work within its world. The return of Goro Majima as a playable character has been a long-requested feature from fans of the series, so giving him a game in which he is the only star is bound to be a hit.
