Mercedes-AMG is developing its first fully in-house designed electric high-performance SUV, set to undergo initial testing this winter.

Mercedes is coming for other automakers currently dominating the high-performance electric space, such as Porsche. The company does offer all-electric SUVs like the EQB and EQE, but now it’s turning up the heat with a fresh announcement about an off-roader being developed entirely within the AMG division.

The SUV will be “Born in Affalterbach,” AMG’s headquarters. It will be built on the brand’s proprietary AMG.EA platform designed specifically for high-powered EVs. Test models are scheduled to hit the roads this winter as development ramps up.

While AMG has churned out high-performance versions of Mercedes SUV models for decades, this is the first time it has crafted one from the ground-up as an AMG original. Its SUV lineup currently consists of amped-up AMG variants of the GLA, GLB, GLC, GLE, GLS, and EQE – topped by the G63, the crown jewel off-roader.

However, this new model will be the second full AMG.EA-based model after the brand’s first EV that’s currently in testing. It also represents just the sixth vehicle engineered entirely by the AMG team following the current and previous GT generations, the SL, and the SLS.

According to Michael Schiebe, the chairman of Mercedes-AMG, this AMG-first philosophy for the new EV SUV means it will “embody the core AMG qualities of emotion and performance” before anything else. He emphasized that the company is responding to the popularity of SUVs by offering customers a “truly captivating” off-roader.

Indeed, SUVs have become something of a global phenomenon, making up a bulk of the automobile sales. According to the International Energy Agency, that genre of cars accounted for 48% of global car sales last year, setting a new record. The US alone saw over 8 million SUVs sold in 2023, which was an increase of over 1.1 million from 2022.

While details are thin about what Mercedes is prepping, you can bet it’s looking to tap this lucrative market with AMG’s signature high-performance flair.
