Microsoft has blocked the Windows 11 24H2 update for PCs with certain Ubisoft games due to crashes and other issues.
As reported by Bleeping Computer, Microsoft has hit the pause button on rolling out the latest Windows update (24H2) to systems with some highly popular Ubisoft titles installed due to compatibility issues causing crashes, freezes, and audio problems.
The conflict came to light soon after 24H2 started reaching the general Windows 11 user base. Gamers took to online forums like Reddit and Microsoft’s Answers community to report that titles from Ubisoft’s franchises like Assassin’s Creed and the newly released Star Wars Outlaws were experiencing erratic behavior after the update.
Some reported the games failing to launch at all, while others encountered freezes, black screens, or lost audio a few minutes into gameplay sessions. The problems seemed to crop up most often when loading saved games, though the issues were inconsistent across different user reports.
Thankfully, Microsoft has acknowledged the conflict in a support document. The officially confirmed list of affected games includes Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Origins, and Odyssey, as well as Star Wars Outlaws and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.
Working on a Fix
Some fixes are already here. Ubisoft says it’s already deployed a temporary hotfix for Star Wars Outlaws as part of version 1.4.1. However, it warns players may still see some performance hitches as a more permanent solution is worked on. The publisher has also posted about looking into a fix for the Assassin’s Creed Origins issue on Steam forums.
In the meantime, the advice for gamers is clearly to exercise patience and give Microsoft and Ubisoft some time to untangle this mess before upgrading.
Microsoft also cautions users against attempting to manually install 24H2 on systems running these games until the compatibility issues can be properly resolved.
