Modder Ken Pillonel has been selling DIY USB-C kits for Apple AirPods for some time, but now you can get USB-C on your AirPods without any installation required, or risk of damage to your device.
Pillonel’s smart protection cases are constructed from dark gray tough Nylon 12 plastic, with a rugged texture. They’re super light and stay attached to your device, but can be easily unplugged to access the Lightning port.
The free and open-source design is available on GitHub. Anyone can install these cases in just 10 seconds, Pillonel claims, and they’re available for the AirPods 1, 2, 3, Pro 1, Pro 2, and Max.
AirPods Max USB-C Adapter Costs Around $47
Pillonel anticipates that the AirPods Max version, an external connector that’s molded to seamlessly fit the shape of the device, will be the most popular.
Apple’s most recent $550 update simply added new AirPods Max colors and support for USB-C charging, leading to dismay from those expecting a more substantial upgrade. With this adapter, you’re essentially getting all the same features for around $47.
Cases for other AirPods models start from around $29 and are around the same price as cases sold on Apple’s website.
The smart protection cases are available to buy now at https://shop.kenp.io/, with shipping from October 7th.
